About this property

A European Country Getaway ~ 1930s Stone Cottage In Connecticut!

The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to “summer” in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the place where the domestic staff stayed when the family was staying in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, the home once had views of Hartford. Today after lots of trees grew, views are still just a minute away and the cool breezes remain!

Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. There is over 1000 of living space. The bath fixtures are original from the 30s and the huge stone fireplace has propane fired gas logs for cozy winter nights. The large first-floor great room also has a small coffee service, there is NO KITCHEN and we are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.

The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways and lead to the private entry door.

Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with old patio chairs, benches, and a firepit.

Amenities include freshly laundered soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas, and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hair dryer and a first aid box.

The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, with old books, old magazines, and games to enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones. Excellent wireless service to keep tabs on the world if you need to.

The coffee service provides a toaster oven, a French press and a Keurig single cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar.

Our goal is to greet you and then leave you to enjoy the cottage and all the surrounding amenities and beauty at your leisure. We live in the main house so we are always available by text or cell phone.

The beds are a king sized and a standard full sized. The south bedroom offers an antique double. We provide a complete list of emergency info in the unlikely event that you would need it.

The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning. The firepit makes great campfires for grilling hot dogs and making S'Mores.

Granby is an "upscale", small suburban Hartford community with tons of nearby amenities and located in an area known for working dairy farms, equestrian centers, apple orchards and farm wineries Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, art galleries, country libraries as well as gourmand evening dining establishments.
The Windy Top Cottage is located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property) and a 5-minute drive from the best waterfalls in Connecticut! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of hiking/walking trails, a game refuge and several state forests. Our street has huge old oak trees with amazing old stone walls and is a local favorite for jogging and walking. Ask us to send you our "Granby Hiking Guide"....

A wonderful weekend of R&R
We enjoyed a much needed weekend of R&R at Windy Top. It is wonderfully quiet and so enjoyable to brew some tea, read & sit by the fire. Thoughtful touches throughout the cottage make it the perfect spot for a relaxing, cozy, getaway!

Hosts Thought of Every Detail
This was the perfect one-night getaway for two busy moms. The decor was cozy and inviting, and the fireplace and remote-controlled candles gave the cottage a wonderful ambiance. The beds we comfortable too. Having a refrigerator and some appliances was very handy despite there being no kitchen. We will definitely be back!

Best VRBO Experience to date!
Windy top cottage was the perfect destination for our girls trip / birthday weekend. We had such an amazing time enjoying the quiet mornings outside, disconnected evenings in the cottage, and the beautiful town of Granby and surrounding areas. The cottage is even cuter than the pictures show (which is already so cute and what drew us in in the first place). There was even a welcome sign with our names on it when we arrived! It is obvious that so much time, thought and love went into creating this beautiful space and the details have not gone unnoticed. From the amazing room service offered, to the most extensive collection of bathroom essentials and local recommendations, Windy top surpassed our expectations and was our favorite stay to date. If you are a fan of high tea you cannot miss Dawn’s beautifully curated “picnic lunch for 2”. It was prepared and ready for us as soon as we arrived with the most gorgeous table setting and she so graciously clears everything away so quickly we barely knew she was there, it was like magic! Thank you so much to Dawn and Ken who made us feel so welcome from the second we arrived to the minute we left. If you’re thinking about booking windy top cottage let this be your push to just do it!

Dawn and I are an "empty nest" couple with a love for hospitality. We currently own an older Cape Cod home in North Granby, Connecticut. The property includes our stone guest house with 2 bedrooms, a bath and a living room with a massive stone fireplace. Dawn has a furniture restoration business and Ken has been in real estate sales for over 40 years. We love country antiques and decorating with a vintage style. Ken is involved with the local historical society and has served on the town Economic Development Commission for over 10 years. Please see our Guidebook for many ideas of what you can do when you stay with us.
