The city’s historic centre is rich in architecture and historical culture. L’Aquila has been designated the Italian Capital of Culture for 2026. The oldest jubilee in Catholic history takes place here every year on August 28 and 29. The surrounding area is full of points of interest and breathtaking landscapes, such as the Gran Sasso di Italia; the plain has been called “Little Tibet.” Just a stone’s throw away stands Europe’s highest fortress, Rocca Calascio.
