Marzamemi is situated by the sea, on a short rocky promontory along the coast at the extreme southeastern tip of Sicily, in the Ionian Sea, between the islands of Vendicari and Capo Passero. It is a hamlet of the municipality of Pachino and is known for its tuna trap, which was the main source of employment. However, when we speak of the “tonnara,” we must consider two things: the tuna trap itself—that is, the system of nets that was set out to sea every year in the summer, one nautical mile from the coast; the onshore complex, which includes the “loggia,” where the freshly caught tuna were gutted, the former cannery, and the owner’s mansion with all the small cottages surrounding it, which served as lodging for sailors from other towns.
