Chalford is a picturesque village nestled in the Frome Valley, approximately 4 miles southeast of Stroud, Gloucestershire. Often referred to as the "Alpine village" of the Cotswolds, Chalford is renowned for its charming stone cottages that cling to steep hillsides, connected by narrow pathways historically traversed by donkeys. The village's name may derive from "Chalk Ford," referencing the area's limestone foundations, or from "calves' ford," indicating an ancient cattle crossing. Chalford flourished during the Middle Ages as a hub for the wool and silk industries, with numerous weavers' cottages and mills established along the valley. While the textile trade has since declined, many historic mill buildings have been repurposed into homes and offices, preserving the village's rich architectural heritage. Situated within the "Golden Valley," one of Stroud's Five Valleys, Chalford offers residents and visitors stunning natural beauty and a vibrant arts and crafts scene. Notably, artist Damien Hirst maintains a studio in the village, and the renowned sculpture foundry Pangolin Editions is also located here. The community is further enriched by local establishments such as the New Red Lion pub and the Lavender Bakehouse & Coffee Shop, providing welcoming spaces for refreshment. Chalford's unique blend of historical significance, cultural vibrancy, and scenic landscapes make it a distinctive and cherished part of the Cotswolds.
