About this property

12th Century Templar Watchtower And Manor House With Stunning Views

Facing the church, in the delightful hamlet of St. Martin de Vers, rises a 12th-century Templar watchtower with sensational views. A charming walled garden surrounds it – a riot of colour in summer – with a barbecue terrace, and a discreetly placed, yet generous swimming pool. Fill this manor house with your family and friends: the interiors may be magnificent and the style 'chateau', but the décor feels homely not daunting. Simple stone walls are set off by period oak furniture - big rugs top wooden floors and the sitting room is baronial, with huge comfy white sofas around a Godin wood-burning stove, in the fireplace at one end, while high-backed dining chairs and pewter candlesticks grace a massive oak dining table at the other. In between generous William Morris curtains frame windows overlooking the garden. An adjoining small, but perfect first-floor kitchen opens on to a veranda with blissful views. Gleaming oak stairs in the tower link four double bedrooms that boast carved four-posters from the set of 'The Tudors ' and views over the medieval village, yet offer all the modern comforts of ensuite bathrooms with large, fluffy towels.( A twin room with ensuite and a lofty single bedroom at the top of the tower with stunning views are also available ) If you plan to bring a larger party a cosy cottage in the garden ( only let in conjunction with the main house ) offers two extra bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and its own kitchen/ livingroom for a supplement.

Magical Templar Tower
Our party of five adults had a great two weeks here. The photos don't do it justice. Shepperd, the caretaker, was very helpful in terms of anything about the house as well as providing useful background on things in the area. The house is a bundle of romance, with lots of places to come together and to be apart: the pool (slightly on the small side for games - but plenty big for a cooling dip), the garden (perfect for mid-morning tea or to get out of the sun in the afternoon), the dining space just outside the kitchen (we had breakfast there every day and supper most evenings), "the tent" - a covered area near the house that's perfect for end of day drinks, and of course the great room (we played games on the enormous wooden table most nights). It was a bit dusty in places and if you are a total clean freak this might not be for you. And there are spiders. The village has some pretty walks and a local honey seller. The church, just across the road, looks like a fortress, and inside is lovely. The bells ring out the time night and day, and quickly become part of the charm. If you are worried they might keep you awake - don't. Local shopping is a bit limited but adequate, and there is a weekly producers market in the nearest town during the summer. A fair amount of things to do and see relatively nearby. Examples: Cahors (check out the bridge), Rocamadour, and my favourite from this trip: Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. Also, kayaking and canoeing: Kalapca Loisirs was great fun.

Sejour agréable
Très belle propriété où l'on a apprécié que chaque chambre bénéficie de sa salle de bain. Les environs sont tres calmes. La piscine est ideale. Le seul bemol serait la taille de la cuisine pour une si grande maison.

10-day holiday
A fascinating house with a lot of charm in a picturesque village. A lot to see and do in the vicinity - a beautiful area. Garden and pool impeccably clean, however not the inside; dust in the bedroom corners, a stained pillow, unclean dinner plates, leftovers in freezer and refrigerator, etc, was disappointing.

The owner is an Irish architect and designer with a track record of restoring historic buildings. He met the previous owner of La Tour des Templiers at a country wedding in Ireland. For himself, his family and chocolate labrador ( Treacle Tart ), La Tour des Templiers is a family home where they holiday, relax and hold family celebrations. It is a happy house with good associations and they hope you will derive as much pleasure from staying at La Tour des Templiers as they do.

Why they chose this property

This property ticked all the boxes for us, both as a family holiday home and accommodation for larger parties. Its location - in the heart of a charming rural village yet only 15 minutes from exit 57 on the A20 - Within easy reach of four airports ( Toulouse, Brive, Rodez, Limoges). Cahors with its culture, wine food and markets only ½ hour away. The house and village is redolent with history and tradition, yet now boasts all modern amenities. Add to this the wide range of sights to see ( St. Cirq Lapopie, Rocamadour, The Prehistoric Cave Paintings of Pech Merle and subterranean boat trips in the Gouffre de Padirac. A short distance away are the
towns of Albi with its magnificent cathedral, the medieval alleyways of Figeac and the exquisite Cordes-sur-Ciel perched on its commanding rock. All around is the rolling countryside of the Causses de Quèrcy with its wooded coombs and deep ravined rivers, a joy for artists, hunters, fishermen, canoeists and cyclists alike. To the southwest of Cahors are the vineyards where the renowned Malbec is grown; fresh truffles can be bought at the market in Lalbenque and friendly hunting neighbours occasionally present you with a leg of boar. Local villages boast a selection of fair days, vide greniers and farmers' markets. Children can play in a safe environment of an idyllic landscape. There is indeed something for everybody here.

What makes this property unique

With La Tour des Templiers it was genuinely 'love at first sight'.
Its eccentric layout and quirky features, its oak spiral staircase,
16th century windows and massive oak beamed ceilings. Its south facing location at the heart of the village and its intimate and very private garden. All these things immediately attracted us, and the property also offered possibilities for the features we have added, like the swimming pool, terrace and the spaces we converted in the attics.
