Less than an hour from Palermo, Altavilla Milicia was founded in the early seventeenth century at the behest of the King of Spain Philip III. Its grid-pattern urban layout, still visible today, was designed by architect and sculptor Mariano Smiriglio, known for the Quattro Canti of Palermo. The Belvedere and the Marian sanctuary constitute the main attractions of the town. The Belvedere consists of two adjoining squares located at the northern end of the hill on which the town centre stands, and boasts a panorama that extends from Capo Zafferano to Cefalù, as far as the Aeolian Islands. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Milicia, which overlooks the Belvedere, houses the Painting of the Madonna, a work from the fourteenth century attributed to a Tuscan artist, around which various local tales hover. Among the monuments worth visiting are also the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso, called Chiesazza, and the three coastal guard towers that dominate the landscape. Altavilla Milicia boasts one of the most beautiful beaches of Palermo and its surroundings, perfect for groups of friends, families with children and couples; its crystalline sea is perfect for lovers of snorkelling and diving. Altavilla Milicia offers the typical delicacies of Palermo cuisine: arancini, cannoli, cassata al forno and plenty of fresh fish.
Santa Flavia train station is 3 km from the accommodation, whilst Palermo Falcone and Borsellino airport is 57 km away.
