Steeped in history and surrounded by three acres of peaceful private grounds, this country retreat combines timeless character homely comforts. Dating back to the 14th century, Kilmichael is one of Arran’s oldest continuously inhabited houses. Now beautifully restored, it features six spacious bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, making it ideal for family gatherings, groups of friends, or multi-generational holidays.
The house is generously proportioned, featuring several communal spaces where you can unwind and dine at your own pace. The traditional country kitchen is well-equipped for preparing everything from simple breakfasts to elaborate evening meals, while the dining room provides a refined setting for shared meals and special occasions. There’s also a cosy breakfast room with a wood-burning stove, perfect for slower starts to the day – as well as a drawing room and a morning room with another wood burner, ideal for reading, games, or simply relaxing. Outside, the extensive grounds offer plenty of space for outdoor dining, games, or spotting local wildlife. Mature trees, lawns, and secluded corners make it easy to find a quiet moment to yourself. Please note: Kilmichael is a historic house, full of character and quirks that come with its age. While it has been thoughtfully restored for comfort, it is not a modern,purpose-built property. Guests should expect the charm of an old country home, which may include the occasional creak or variation in water pressure, part of its authentic character rather than hotel-style perfection.
Kilmichael’s central location on the island makes it an excellent base for exploring Arran’s many attractions. Just minutes away is Brodick Castle, a striking baronial mansion with impressive gardens, woodland trails, and family-friendly activities. The castle grounds are ideal for picnics or gentle walks, and the nearby beach offers stunning views across Brodick Bay.
The island’s highest peak, Goatfell, is within easy reach, with a well-marked trail starting just outside Brodick. The views from the summit are spectacular, stretching across the Firth of Clyde to the mainland. For gentler outings, the coastal paths from Brodick to Lamlash or Corrie offer beautiful seascapes and chances to spot seals, otters, and seabirds.
Food lovers will enjoy sourcing local produce to prepare back at Kilmichael. From fresh seafood to artisan cheeses, Arran has a wealth of local suppliers, and there are regular farmers’ markets and farm shops to explore. For a break from cooking, nearby villages offer excellent cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Further afield, the Arran Distillery in Lochranza offers a great day out, with whisky tours and tastings, while the ruins of Lochranza Castle make a picturesque stop. Golfers will appreciate the choice of seven courses across the island, and cyclists can explore scenic routes on and off the beaten path.
With its characterful interiors, peaceful grounds, and prime location, it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the best of this magical island at your own pace.
