One of Teddington's historical landmarks is Teddington Lock, around a 15 minute walk from the property - it was completed in 1811. It is the largest lock on the River Thames and marked the tidal limit of the river, playing a crucial role in river navigation and commerce. If you walk over the bridge at the Lock and turn right you can walk to Kingston Upon Thames in around 20 minutes ( a very pretty walk) and if you turn left you can walk to Richmond Upon Thames (beautiful and very worth the effort). Please also check out the exquisite Petersham Nurseries, possibly the most beautiful garden centre in the UK and it also serves very special (rather pricey lunches) - but you have to book in advance. To make it more special, you could drive to St Margarets (Twickenham) and get the tiny ferry / boat across to Petersham. It is such a treat and lovely for children.
Nearby Hampton Court Palace, originally built for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the early 16th century and later seized by King Henry VIII, became a prominent royal residence. The grandeur and royal presence at Hampton Court attracted nobility and wealth to the surrounding areas, including Teddington, which benefited from the economic and social activities associated with the palace
Kingston upon Thames, another neighbouring area, also holds historical significance. As an ancient market town with roots going back to at least the Saxon era, Kingston was a royal borough where several Saxon kings were crowned.
During the 20th century, Teddington continued to grow, with the establishment of institutions like the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in 1900. The NPL played a significant role in scientific research and innovation, further enhancing Teddington's prominence.Today, Teddington is known for its blend of historical charm and modern amenities, with thriving local businesses, beautiful green spaces like Bushy Park, and a vibrant community. The historical connections to Hampton Court and Kingston upon Thames remain integral to understanding Teddington's development and heritage.
