Region: With many quaint, seaside and market towns, historic sites and miles of glorious coastline to explore, Sussex has it all for a great holiday destination.
Town: Located on the coast of England in West Sussex, Shoreham-by-Sea can be separated into two towns; the old and the new. Old Shoreham is the site of the pre-Norman settlement, clustered around the Church of St Nicholas, part of which may date back to the ninth century.
New Shoreham has the Marlipins Museum and the church of St Mary de Haura. The Marlipins Museum, with its unusual checkered flint facing, is the oldest non-religious building in Sussex. Although the original purpose of the building isn’t clear, it was used as an Oat Market in 1347.
The church of St Mary de Haura was built by the Normans at the very end of the eleventh century. Shoreham Beach is a huge shingle bank which reaches across the mouth of the Adur. Within Shoreham are plenty of shops, as well as many restaurants and other places to eat.
