The cottage is one of The Twelve Apostles, a famous row of pretty and characterful cottages just a few yards from the beach in this tiny village located just a few miles along the coastal road from Lochranza at the foot of Glen Catacol. Several walks can start from the village including alongside the burn towards Loch Tanna; or past Loch na Davie through Gleann Easan Biorach to Lochranza Distillery, returning on the coast road, over the hill on the Postman’s Walk or by bus. Wildlife that can be seen from the cottage includes red deer, red squirrels, seals, otters, golden eagles, dolphins, and gannets.
This village has become known as home to three of the world’s rarest and most endangered tree species. A National Nature Reserve in Glen Diomhan, one of Glen Catacol’s side glens is home to some 300 Arran Whitebeams (Sorbus arranensis), and over 200 Cut-Leaved Whitebeams (Sorbus pseudofennica) and the world’s only wild Catacol Whitebeam (Sorbus pseudomeinichii). This is a large part of the total world population of species which, apart from a few kept elsewhere for conservation purposes, are only found on Arran.
The Island of Arran is a beautiful island, known as Scotland in miniature, with spectacular mountains, beautiful white sandy beaches, and varied woodland. Steeped in history, Arran boasts its very own Stone Circles, and is home to two castles, the famous Brodick Castle and Lochranza Castle ruins. For the active, this beautiful island is a walkers’ and cyclists’ paradise. There are excellent beaches, horse riding, water sports, bird watching and six golf courses. There is also a wide variety of world-famous island made products ranging from chocolate and cheese to soaps, mustard, and preserves, and of course Lochranza Whisky at the distillery.
The pebble beach is within 50 yards. 10 The Apostles can be booked with Apostles Back House (UK37313) to accommodate up to 7 guests.
