About this property

Villa San Michele - Four Bedroom Villa, Sleeps 8

Set on five acres among olive and almond trees and brimming with history, this villa in Puglia was once a chapel and monastery dating back to the 1300s. It’s now a chic Italian getaway within 5-30 minutes of medieval towns and pristine beaches with secret coves.

Traditional stone architecture extends throughout, acting as a decorative piece of its own. The villa blends classic décor and antique furnishings with stylish modern features, such as craftsman vessel sinks. Four simple bedrooms sleep eight, each with their own bath, and the full kitchen and common areas are spacious and inviting, complete with fireplaces and ‘cantina’ dining.

Outside, a private oasis with sun loungers beneath canopies, a swimming pool, and exotic gardens with fruit trees await. Alfresco dining on original stone piazalle or covered terrace is a must with the wood-fired pizza oven on hand. Plus, the villa boasts a secret, underground limestone cave dating back to the 7th century with medieval frescos!

A stay at this ancient villa places you only 3km from the foodie haven of Ceglie Messapica, complete with its famous Trulli houses. Be sure to try Osteria Pugliese – a local favourite and New York Times recommended. Perfect Puglia: “Set in five acres of exotic gardens with olive trees and giant cacti (think Jurassic Park) our home for the week sleeps eight and blends stylish décor with antique furnishings and stylish modern features. 'Wow, we are sleeping in our very own castle!' shouted my excited five-year-old boy Zak…” Read the full review of Villa San Michele, over on the Daily Mail

Location:

Villa San Michele is situated in Ceglie Messapica, a charming small town of whitewashed houses and narrow streets located in the province of Brindisi on the edge of the Valle Itria. It is famous for its Trulli; stone built conical buildings typical of this area of southern Italy.

The landscape is typical of the area, particularly rich in nature and history. Dotted around the surrounding land are countless Trulli as well as ancient farms called Masseria. It is home to dry, stone walls, olive groves, vineyards, and woods with ancient oaks.

The town of Ceglie is close and also rich in history and culture. It traces its origin back 15 centuries before Christ and was originally part of Magna Grecia (Greater Greece).

Puglia is considered one of the best places to eat in Italy by Italians, and Ceglie Messapica is regarded as one of the best places to eat in Puglia. There are many restaurants in Ceglie, ranging from simple trattoria to high quality affairs. Many of them will offer some version of what is known as Cucina Povera, literally "poor cooking", derived from a time when the residents of this area of Italy had to make do with simple ingredients and transform them into something more.

Less than half an hour away are the beaches of the Adriatic coast where there are many quiet coves with crystal clear water and long, sandy beaches backed by dunes. A little over half an hour on the other side of the peninsula are the stunning beaches of the Ionian coast where mile upon mile of white sandy beaches extends south to the tip of the heel of Italy.

The airports of Brindisi and Bari, both with direct flights from the United Kingdom, are 30 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes respectively from the property.

Grotto

Near the property is a large natural limestone karst cave or grotto, some 52 metres deep. The entrance to the grotto, shaded by fig and olive trees opens to reveal a huge cavern. Stone stairs descend in two directions.

There is some evidence that the cave has been occupied by humans since Neolithic times. The cave was settled from around the 7th century AD by Basilian (Byzantine) monks who had escaped persecution in Constantinople, and this religious settlement remained there for several centuries.

Descending into the first part of the grotto, covered in stalactites, is a large altar hewn out of the solid rock. Above and to one side of the altar is a fresco of the Virgin (Vergine Orante), which studies have shown to be the oldest in Brindisi province, dating from the 8th century AD. Directly above the altar is a well-preserved fresco of Christ, (Cristo Pancreator) and another of San Michele, both of which date from the 11th century.

Locals say that tunnels lead from the grotto and run for several kilometres. During the 1800´s the land surrounding the house was a vineyard and during this time an important ancient Messapican vase was found, 30 cm tall, which was transferred to the archaeological collection of the Museum of Berlin.

Fantastic property

It was our first time in Puglia and this property came just as advertised to make it a memorable trip for my family. The property was clean and well maintained and the pool was great. Maria the property manager was also fantastic and very helpful and accessible. Would highly recommend staying at this property. Thanks Ian!

Beautiful Property

Maria, the property manager was exceptional. She even helped pay a parking ticket. Would like to have spent more time around the pool, but there was a lot to do in around the area. Would return any time.

Idyllic Stay

The property, furnishings and pool more than delivered for my family and I (5 of us). All communication and assistance from Maria the property manager was truly excellent along with the owner’s incredibly useful, detailed and accurate notes about the local area. The pool is large and very well maintained. I could not recommend more strongly. Thank you so much.

What a find!

We first booked in 2020 but were unable to make it out until June 2022. Ian the owner was so understanding and helpful before the trip and Maria is an angel…organising anything you need and a great font of knowledge and ideas about the area (as well as her mother being a fantastic cook, which we experienced at the house). A wonderful spot with every convenience in a beautifully furnished house with great facilities…what more could you ask for?

Exceeded Expectations

The reviews that I read were accurate. It’s beautiful and spacious and luxurious. We had everything we needed. A gourmets Kitchen and which even had a little Limoncello in the freezer. Nice bedrooms and luxurious showers. A beautiful pool area with an outdoor kitchen and your own cave. We had memorable evenings and days and Maria was super helpful in every way. Someone abandoned a sweet puppy on us and Maria was super awesome in helping us deal with that. Ian was very gracious as well. Maria found a home for the puppy within 2 days and was a lifesaver, literally. Awesome place. Just wish we could have stayed longer. In Italy for 3 weeks and this Masseria was by far the best place we stayed!

WOW !!!!!

An amazing house just outside the charming town of Ceglie Messapica. The house is very spacious and very well equipped, it swallowed six of us. The House information folder is very, very comprehensive and the recommendations are good. The pool is lovely with plenty of loungers and options for shade. The outside eating area is a delight and made for magical evenings when the weather permitted!! Inside is also a good eating area. Rooms are all very comfortable and well equipped. Maria, who manages the house, is a star. Great communicator and nothing was too much trouble, such a plus. Ceglie is a lovely town with good shops, very good restaurants and very nice for an evening stroll before and/or after dinner. Ceglie is an easy 5 minute drive from the house. We parked in a square on the way into town (Via Fratelli Bandiera?) from where the main Piazza is a five minute walk. We also had the benefit of 3 adorable kittens during our stay!!!

Wonderful week-long stay!

My family had a wonderful week-long stay, and we could have stayed even longer! The owner, Ian, was super responsive ahead of our stay, and sent plenty of recommendations to us. And Maria, the property manager, made sure we had everything we needed for a great trip! We even did 2 amazing & delicious chef dinners at the house (highly recommend)! Our group was 6 adults and 2 infants, and we had plenty of space in the house, and the location was great for the many day trips we took around Puglia - we went to 8 different cities in 8 days - there's so much to see! The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to cook at home many of the nights we were there (but obviously preferred when we were able to have chefs come cook for us :) and the property surrounding the home is just beautiful. It was a little too cold for us to actually go into the pool while we were there, but we did enjoy spending time out by the pool and playing bocce ball while sipping on afternoon Aperol spritzes! Overall, we had a great time staying in this awesome, historic home, and we would love to come back again in the future!

Splendida Villa in Valle d’Itria

Wonderful!

Our group of six adults (3 couples) thoroughly enjoyed our idyllic week at this beautiful masseria! It is spacious, comfortable and visually stunning, with lovely areas both indoors and out for gathering. The property is quiet, yet well-situated for day trips to nearby towns. The collection of books and reference materials was impressive, and Maria was attentive and helpful. This property exceeded our expectations.

Ferien in Apulien

Magical week in Puglia

We spent a week at this lovely, private stone residence amidst beautiful vegetation, olive trees, stone walls and an herbal scented path full of flowers and diverse plants leading to a gorgeous pool. The location is within minutes of a very charming, culinary-oriented town and not far from many others that should be visited. There are many places to sit and enjoy the property or to dine outdoors. The residence is historic, full of character and charm, but with every convenience and comfort. The owner supplies a fabulous collection of very helpful information regarding nearby restaurants, towns to visit and beaches. The gracious caretaker, Maria, is readily available for any questions or requests that may arise. In particular, she arranged for two fantastic dinners of typical pugliese dishes to be served at the house for us. One of the most satisfying and memorable trips I have ever taken.

A beautiful and luxurious house with a family friendly feel and great pool in an interesting area with good beaches and brilliant restaurants if you do your research. All our party of eight aged 26 - 60+ loved it! It was very well equipped and the gardens were especially good with lots of places to sit and enjoy the fig and olive trees and mediterranean planting. A little sneaky peak of paradise!

Beautiful space with incredible charm

We spent a week at Masseria San Michele this summer. The home is exquisite with breath taking beautifully kept grounds. The grotto is something my family will never forget. Maria met us at the house and was incredibly gracious and available by text whenever we had a question or need. One evening her lovely mother cooked for us and it was a feast. We spend a lot of time in Italy but this was our first trip to Puglia and we were struck by the stark beauty and the generosity of the people. We can't wait to return.
