About this property
Stunning Authentic Tucson Adobe in Old Fort Lowell
This award winning Historic East-Central home sits on two acres, located in the heart of the Fort Lowell Historic District near Craycroft and Fort Lowell Road. The spacious property has three bedrooms and three baths, original colored concrete and brick floors, hand carved ceilings, vigas and a huge sculpted fireplace in the salon-like living room. Historic Casa Cheruy is perfect balance of location, privacy and luxury.
The historically significant Casa Cheruy (also called the Craycroft House) has a unique and rich history. Mud adobe walls of the house were once part of the Territorial Fort Lowell Quartermaster Corrals and date to the 1870s. In the 1930 and 40s, the area became a desert artist colony and the property was the home and studio of french couple Germaine and René Cheruy who designed theatrical sets for avantgarde theaters in Paris in the 1920s and worked for sculptor Auguste Rodin. Noted architectural designer Veronica Hughart restored and added to the house in the 1960s. It has a luxurious desert and sophisticated romantic feel that embodies Tucson style.
This property is an elegant example of vernacular Spanish-Pueblo revival style architecture that was popularized in the southwest in the first decades of the twentieth century. The house is located in a mesquite bosque, with a wonderful large back yard lined with an old farm fence and has a large amount of outdoor space for barbequing and outdoor dining. There is a circular driveway lined with desert creosote and private parking. The home can comfortably accommodate outdoor dinner parties. Melting adobe ruins are scattered around the property.
The property includes a main house with two bedrooms each with a queen bed and two full bathrooms, a large spacious living room with unobstructed views of the Santa Catalina Mountains, a dining room, fully equipped kitchen, and TV room/den. The property also includes guest house/studio with a third queen bed, bathroom and kitchenette.
There is Xfinity, Apple TV and Wireless internet.
This iconic historic property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and meticulously restored in 2017.
Interaction with guests is as much or as little as guest would like. If interested we are happy to arrange guided tours of Tucson and Fort Lowell.
