About Barbara Bell
Here we are checking out the lava flow. We have lived in East Hawai`i for over 30 years, so we obviously love Hawai`i. Jack is a 3rd generation Hardwood Flooring Contractor, newly retired, and Barbara is a jaquette of all trades, most recently working for the County of Hawai`i.
Barbara Bell purchased this House in 1998
Why Barbara Bell chose Keaau
East Hawaii is varied, and exciting; the volcano never ceases to inspire and thrill. Madame Pele gives her unique energy to the whole of East Hawaii, and especially the Puna District. We have lived in East Hawaii for so long, and this house was our home, until we moved to the Big City of Hilo. Jack built this home in 1998, after living a few blocks away for about 15 years. We have completed a major re-fresh in Fall, 2013, and seem to always be cleaning, upgrading, or doing maintenance on something. The house is definitely in good order.
What makes this House unique
Because our home is almost at the end of a quiet dead-end street, it is very restful and private. We like to find new spots, via bicycle, or hiking boots, or swimming fins. There are so many incredible places to explore and we never get tired of adventuring. We like to walk or bike the coastline--for miles. To the south, we go to some tidepools about 1 1/2 miles away. To the north, we bike, then hike the last bit to a white sand beach that's about 5 miles away. When we are here, if we're not doing maintenance stuff, we also spend many hours lounging back and forth between the hot tub, the solar heated pool (90-95 degrees F), and lazing around on the deck. It's so private and quiet--we love it.

Peace, Paradise, and Play
Aloha magic as soon as you step through the door! Crashing waves, swimming under the stars, rainbows, dolphins, honus. Everything was exactly as described! We cooked and bbq everyday, great kitchen, everything you need! And the beauty of the floors, the walls, the wood, you can tell the folks that own this place take great pride in tending and taking care of their home they share. It was the perfect place to celebrate my niece's coming birth of her son. Many stories were told sitting on the lanai that will be passed down to the next generations! Thank you for sharing this piece of paradise! And thanks to Wendy, the property manager, she was a joy to communicate with! Mahalo!
Beautiful location, amazing house
I loved this house, the detailed woodwork, the views, the pool, the hot tub, the location! I did not realize how hot it would be and this house does not have AC. But still, an amazing stay overall!
Thanks for your nice review. Most guests have commented that once they opened the house up and turned on the fans (located throughout the house), the ocean breezes cool it down quickly and allow them to hear the ocean waves lapping against the cliffs. We're glad you had an overall amazing stay. Aloha!
Gorgeous, clean, convenient, beautiful setting!
The house was gorgeous -- the floors are a work of art! Everything was spotlessly clean. The location is very convenient to the sights on this side of the island, and the owners have provided a lot of information regarding local activities and things to see. The private pool and hot tub were a big hit with the kids! Views are tremendous! Thank you so much!
This home has everything for a great vacation including whale watching! As repeat vacationers to the big island, we would recommend this rental. The home is very clean and inviting. The pool and spa on the ocean made whale watching a luxury experience. The bikes were a bonus. My husband and I brought four family members and friends with us to the Big Island...all first timers. Everyone enjoyed their stay and are asking for a speedy return. Mahalo for a great vacation.
Incredible Cliffside GetAway
This is the place to stay on the southeast side of Hawaii Island. The house is incredibly built and beautiful. The cliffside location cannot be beat - the views can't be beat either. The ocean and the sky are beautiful - as are the stars at night (very quiet except for the waves). We saw (and heard) whales, dolphins, and Honu from the house. The place is exactly as pictured - which the pictures do not do it justice. Warm, comfortable, and spacious - a great place to spend all day - or use as a home base (we did both). We traveled all over - you're close to Pahoa, Kalapana, Keeau, Hilo ....Plenty of space for a few people, or a small group. Communication with the owners and manager was easy and prompt. I can't say enough about this place....except that perhaps it has become our home away from home!
The home was well kept, comfortable, and the view is absolutely breathtaking!
I mean the view says it all! This was a beautiful home, the hot tub and pool were a hit with our kids, and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip!
All the relaxing or adventurous activities you can dream of, Volcano viewing, warm pond soaking, sea-life viewing/hearing and every once in a while smelling, Especially wonderful for mind-clearing, adventuring, bike riding, walking, and a close-by great Sunday Farmer's Market -- Maku`u Market.
