My husband and I were very happy to find this cottage near the town we lived in one summer. It was a great place to stay and be able to visit friends we hadn't seen for a while.
This is a wonderful property and we really enjoyed our time away. The peace and quiet was heavenly, and the cottage is just delightful. You can spend a few hours just taking in all the decorations! John is a great host, was available to answer all our questions and provided a ton of information that made our stay easy and just what a tired city couple needed. Next time we'll stay longer!
Booked John’s cabin for a weekend getaway and it surpassed my expectations. The decor of the cabin was awesome. Had everything we needed from making coffee in the morning to grilling out on the large deck. The bed was super comfy too. Sitting by the fire was so enjoyable and very secluded from the other neighbors. We kayaked and fished and it’s very easy to put in on the beach. When I needed to contact John he was responsive in a timely manner! Would definitely recommend and plan on coming again sometime ! Thanks for a great weekend getaway, John. The lady approved as well.
The fishing cabin is adorable with a very comfy bed. The area is quiet and minutes from a beautiful lake. The owner was helpful and the place is very clean. We truly enjoyed our camp fire and had a great time!
Very quaint just like you would picture a getaway cabin. Owner very kind in letting us know about all the little things. The whole area is absolutely beautiful.
My husband and I enjoyed a weekend away at this lovely cabin! Everything we needed was provided. We enjoyed kayaking, fishing, antique shopping and relaxing in nature with a campfire. Very peaceful!
We had a wonderful stay - the cabin was exactly what we wanted/expected with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We swam, kayaked, and hiked - the weather was beautiful too. In the evenings we enjoyed a fire and trying to catch fireflies. It was just as peaceful and relaxing and we thought it would be. We also enjoyed all the wildlife we got to see - especially the bird watching by the lake. Carrollton is adorable and we spent time there walking through the cute shops and even had tea at the Tea Room. John was very helpful with tips on activities and quick to reply to any questions we had. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we’ll hopefully be planning a trip back here soon!
The cabin is warm and inviting. All the supplies you need are provided…kitchen and dining ware, firewood, plenty of blankets. The area is very peaceful. All we heard was the sound of leaves rustling, birds chirping and the fireplace crackling. It’s a short walk to take in the beauty of the lake and surrounding trees.
We had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend! Rented a pontoon from local marina.. very reasonably priced. John was a great host, provides just about everything you will need! Our kids had the time of there lives! The neighborhood is also very friendly! We will be back!
The cottage almost makes you feel like youre in a tree house. The decor is heart warming and meaningful. John was always available. The bonus of having lake access and kayaks made an even more incredible experience. We want to come back ASAP with our son :)
We got so lucky finding this place! It will definitely be our anniversary getaway from now on! The decorations are amazing and so fun, the bed was super comfy (and I’m picky) and the water pressure in the shower was better than my own house!!!! I saw a review complaining about it being musty but it smelled exactly like a cabin should smell, just bring your favorite room spray! I brought my own kayak and my partner used a kayak provided by host and we had a BLAST! This was the PERFECT romantic getaway but it would also be a good place for a family or even a guys fishing trip or something. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
We’ve been wanting to visit and fish on Leesville Lake after enjoying many prior visits to the Atwood Lake region. John is a terrific host who communicated especially well, responding to questions and offering helpful information any time we needed it. The cabin is as described and was very comfortable, well furnished and stocked, and gave us an enjoyable experience for the 2 nights we stayed. Although I didn’t end up using the kayak this time, it’s a great perk to offer!

Not as we expected
Owner was great and communicative. Weather was not great which affected the stay. House smelled musty so not a place you want to spend a lot of time and with bad weather it had us leaving after just one night. Was interested in the kayaks, but did not get to use as we left the morning after we got there. Probably a space that can work for some, but was not what we expected.

Unfortunately the weather was very very wet and stormy for this guest and they left early which I believe affected this review. The cabin is cedar lined and I believe that was what she was referring to as musty. There is no dampness of any kind here. Just unfortunate circumstances with the weather. I wish that Jen had reached out to me prior to leaving this review because I would have worked with her on some compensation.
If they had stayed the whole time and experienced the lake and the overall property they would have given a much better review just like all the other 5 star reviews here.

Don't Flush!
The cottage was clean. First impression though was of a screen door that had a 1/2 inch gap from the door frame. Online pics displayed a fire pit, but there was no wood. Instructions said to "Forage for wood," but the yard is full of poison ivy. Finally there was a note in the bathroom that said, "Don't flush if you don't have to, and limit your water usage in the sink and shower because of the old small septic tank." Call me a spoiled American, but I expect to be able to flush the toilet after each use. We did rent a pontoon boat from the marina, and spent a nice day on the lake. Good price, no security deposit, and a nice polite young man who showed me how to drive the boat, and answered my questions.

All septic issues have been resolved spring 2022, there was a blockage in the outflow.
If I may point by point here.
The cottage was clean. First impression though was of a screen door that had a 1/2 inch gap from the door frame.
It's a cabin in the woods. It's been there for over 70 years. This leads to some settling overtime. But that is the original screen door so I consider it fine and functional. In fact, I'd suggest it's a heritage item which adds to it's semi-rugged nature.
Online pics displayed a fire pit, but there was no wood. Instructions said to "Forage for wood," but the yard is full of poison ivy.
This is incorrect. There is wood for every guest and plenty of it. I was never asked but thought the wood was visible enough to all guests. It has been up to this point.

I no longer rent the pontoon boat but offer complimentary kayaks.
For anyone else reading this, look at the other reviews. I think that should give you a good sense of what a nice little place it is, because it is.
Overall, the stay was decent. The biggest issue was the plumbing. Shortly before the scheduled stay, John (the owner) informed me that the septic is old and care is needed not to overwhelm the system. This means limiting flushes and shower times. This was new information to me and not in the description of the property. I do not think this was intentional, but had I known the extent, I would have made other arrangements. We had several instances that a plunger was required. When I'm paying for a vacation rental, I do not want to be doing any plunging. In the end, my wife was not happy with me.
Everything else was as advertised and John is very attentive. The lake is unbelievable (reminded me of far north Canada) and the boat was a nice addition. Actually, the boat was the "hook" for me since it's very convenient. This is why I took a chance on a "rustic cabin". I will not stay again only because I'd rather be working a fishing pole than a plunger. John is very nice and a good host. Hopefully, something can be done about that septic system.

I appreciate the response Tracy. This is the only complaint I've had regarding this. I have put some new more advanced bioremediation products into the septic to improve water flow out of the septic. This cabin was originally built in 1960 as a weekend getaway and has an older septic system that occasionally requires some time to settle between uses. Unfortunately with the high demand on the rental and the unpredictability of guest water use sometimes it just needs a little time to settle. I had 2 groups stay after Tracy and no one had any issues. Thanks for your feedback.
Cozy little cabin for two was just what we needed. Fall colors were at their peak. The area was quiet as the weather turns cool. We used the kayaks and caught some fish, cooked on the grill and had a nice campfire.
This place was great. Pictures and descriptions are accurate. Place was clean, cute, cosey, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a great long weekend getaway. John was a fantastic host, very nice, and immediately responsive to questions. The swimming beach was cute and not crowded. The lake water was nice, beautiful and serene. So appreciated the use of the kayaks (it was my favorite part of the weekend). Thanks John! We will be back!
