About this property

Hilltop Hacienda - Views Of Bay And Zona Romantica

We recently completed a thorough remodel of Casa Madina. Both bathrooms the Casa were gutted and redone completely, with beautiful traditional Talavera tiles. We also expanded the front living room, making it easy for your whole group to relax together or break into smaller groups for conversations. New windows and a sliding glass door keep the temperature more even and help reduce the outside noise. And the best part of the remodel is the new covered rooftop deck, that takes the view from beautiful to stunning. From the new deck, you see all of Old Town and Centro, including the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Great for the catching the nightly fireworks, or city lights or the beautiful Banderas Bay.

Casa Madina sleeps 10 people in 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in the main house and 2 in the studio below. The Casita is a studio with a queen bed, large bathroom and kitchenette.

The master bedroom has a king bed and ensuite bathroom. The hall bath is shared by 2 bedrooms (1 queen and bunk beds and a king bed in the other room). Each bedroom includes power strips for each guest.

Of course, the whole house has Air Conditioning. Please keep in mind that electricity is very expensive in Puerto Vallarta. Please, turn off the A/C when you leave or when the house is cool or dry enough.

When you want to unwind, enjoy the living room with a 55" Smart TV and DVD player. Connect to your Netflix or other accounts on the TV. We also have board games, playing cards and poker chips. There is also a radio you can plug your iPhone into and play music.

The kitchen is well-stocked and includes a refrigerator, microwave, Rice Cooker, Coffee Maker, Blender, Toaster Oven, wine opener and glasses, Acrylic drinkware for the rooftop Terrace/pool area.

At the end of the day, head up to the rooftop terrace and soaking pool (shared only by the guests of Casa and Casita Madina). With fabulous views of the bay and the Zona Romantica, you can dine outside, enjoy a drink or relax in the pool.

The pool is a soaking pool (~2m x 4m) and is solar heated. It's very refreshing after a long hot day in Puerto Vallarta. There is also a shower on the roof for rinsing off before getting in the pool.

Please note the house is a the top of a hill (hence the great views), up 3 streets from the Old Town area and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

Due to the increasing fees from VRBO (including CC fees), we have had to change to a single payment. Sorry for any confusion or for the impact as we try to manage the increasing fees from VRBO.

All guests (Casa and Casita) will have access to the rooftop terrace soaking Pool.

Other:
First-timers to Puerto Vallarta come for the sun, sea and fun, but soon discover the fantastic restaurants that keep them coming back.

The Malecón is Puerto Vallarta´s beautiful boardwalk and covers nearly two miles along the beach. Surrounded by different bars, nightclubs and restaurants the Malecón is lined by large bronze sculptures from many talented local artists.

Dining:
From fresh, street corner taco stands, to exquisite high-end meals, Puerto Vallarta has it all. You can dine overlooking the city and the bay or with your feet buried in the sand under a palapa. A variety of food from around Mexico to Italian, Burgers, German, ‘American’, Pizza, Asian and more can be found in Puerto Vallarta and all of it uses fresh-caught fish, fresh local vegetables and home-made tortillas and salsas! Best of all, no need to dress up – Puerto Vallarta is very casual and you can wear what makes you comfortable.

Connoisseurs of fine dining are in paradise each November, during Puerto Vallarta's annual Gourmet Dining Festival, and in May every year we have the Restaurant Week(s), at the end of the month.

Some nearby restaurants include Tony’s Please, El Brujo, Los Lirios, and Memo’s Taco stand. Just a little further away, you’ll find Tre Piatti, Los Muertos Brewery, Fredy’s Tucan, Margarita Grill, Fajita Republic, Joe’s Fish Shack, .

Just across the river Rio Cuale to the south lays the Southside with all it's cozy restaurants as La Palapa, Joe Jack's Fish Shack, Daiquiri Dick's, Langoustine's by the pier, Bravo, Fajita Republic and so many more in addition to everything from wonderful little Mexican family-owned restaurants to great taco stands.

About Puerto Vallarta
The beautiful Banderas Bay, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range, is the second largest bay in the Western Hemisphere. Its climate is sub-tropical and features many dense forests, rivers and waterfalls. With an average temperature of 27°C (80°F), it is dry in winter and humid with some afternoon showers in the summer. The rain usually falls in the late afternoons with clear blue skies in the day, making it a year round holiday spot.

Puerto Vallarta's incredible natural beauty combined with the small town atmosphere and the warmth and friendliness of the people makes Puerto Vallarta a very special place.

The old and the new are blended in Puerto Vallarta, and offers all from simple pleasures to sophisticated charms. Here one can find anything from Taco stands to exclusive restaurants, quaint art galleries, air conditioned shopping centers with movie theaters, café's, beach vendors selling Mexican handicrafts, traditional open air markets, walking Mariachi bands on the beach and an incredible variety of activities such as whale watching, boat dinner cruises, Botanical garden, swimming with dolphins, zip lines, tours to near villages, fishing, snorkeling and an array of sight-seeing tours.

Neighborhood:
Casa Madina is in Alta Vista in a quiet, residential Mexican neighborhood. Located at the top of a hill (which gives us great views, but does require walking up some hilly roads or a long set of stairs - or a taxi), there is little traffic. The neighbors are very friendly and some speak English.

Some neighbors have dogs, who love to come visit at Casa Madina. Please don't let them in, but also please be friendly. They are all friendly dogs and help watch out for the house.

There are also several stray cats in the neighborhood, many of whom like to sunbathe on our rooftop terrace. We have citronella spray to help keep them away. You can spray it anywhere the cats gather and they should stay away.

Getting Around:
Walking down the hill to the restaurants/shops (5min or more depending on which one) or the beach (~20 min) includes lots of distractions from the local shops, sellers, and traditional architecture. There are stairs down through the trees from the top of Calle Rodolfo Gomez or walk down the cobblestone streets. Coming home, we usually grab a taxi (from anywhere in Zona Romantica it should cost 50 Pesos).

Taxis or Uber are the best way to get around Puerto Vallarta.

Highlights and Dissappointments
The beds couldn’t have been more comfortable. The location was hard for Uber Drivers to find. The house is on a very steep hill located around many steep hills. Not recommended if you’re walking with joint or hip problems. The house manager was there when we arrived to let us in. The view was amazing although there was a lot of construction around us. There was a homeless couple that took refuge on the steps into the house. They were not an issue other than having to step over them. Upon check out it felt rushed as the manager showed up 5 minutes early and stood waiting for us to get out. I received an email from the manager stating a few towels were missing then promptly another email saying they found them it was actually a beach towel. i emailed her back saying we didn't have it and asking if they had found it. No response. i emailed the property owner and let him know about the homeless couple and inquired if they found the towel… no response. The communication was disappointing and walking challenging for my parents (in their 70's) but overall it was a good location with a beautiful view and comfy beds.

authentic adorable Mexican home with great patio
Love the location. Very close to the romantic zone. The hills not a problem coming down it’s just a little bit of a work out going back up, but didn’t mind it.

View Puerto Vallarta from a different perspective
It needs to be stated up front that if you are not interested in steep up and down hill climbs and or constant taxi rides any time you need to leave, this is not the place for you. Your driver will sigh when he hears the address if he is familiar with it, and at least once a front wheel drive Uber spun his wheels attempting to gain traction on the last small road to casa medina. And while I am listing the cons, might as well acknowledge the construction, which occurred regularly and noisily for most of the day while we were there. It is close, both directly behind the house and also directly in front - obscuring the view of the bay from the patio, but providing a clear view into the sometimes vertigo inducing work life of a PV builder. With that out of the way... Everything else we experienced perfectly showcased the color and authenticity and the rugged practicality of Puerto Vallarta far above the water line. Back where the people who are taking your orders and bringing you drinks go home to rest, relax, laugh, and party. (That also happens very close and loudly to casa medina, but I am not the sort of grouch that lists that as a con). The home is charming. Quickly became OUR home in the way the best rentals do. The mattresses were wonderful - best on our trip - and Gabi was available and helpful throughout. The rooms are large and private, the kitchen is expansive and the central point of the home. The patio is less immediately impressive than the pictures indicate, due to the construction I mentioned and also due to the inevitable 'items may appear larger in the picture than in real life' effect of marketing shots. Still, it is truly wonderful and we loved it. I would recommend reshooting with an eye for the variety of scenes you are able to witness, rather than focusing on the bay view, which is literally shrinking as you watch. If you are an urban explorer, this is heaven. Any walk results in hidden pathways, small mercados, stairs to nowhere, glimpses into lives much different (than mine, at least). PV night life is alive below you, and can be walked to in 10 minutes or so, the beach is twice that or more depending on pace. You will not want to walk back more than once or twice unless you are younger than I am. My group of 5 slept comfortably, spread out and relaxed, played games, explored the town, ate and bathed regularly :), and we will remember the time we spent in Casa Medina fondly.

Although we call Virginia home, we are avid travelers. Matt has been to over 35 countries and lived overseas twice. Dean was born abroad, but grew up in the LA area. Some of our favorite places to visit besides Puerto Vallarta are Cambodia, Japan, Berlin and Las Vegas. When we travel, we prefer to get to know the local culture and people and live like the locals. We tried to bring that feeling into our house for you.

Dean and Matt

Why they chose this property

We love Puerto Vallarta! And we love the hacienda style homes of Mexico and Southern California. While vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, we started to look for a home and fell in love with Casa Madina. A short walk (or drive) up the hill to a real residential neighborhood, where it is quiet and friendly. And the views from the roof are wonderful to take in with a mug of coffee in the morning or a drink in the evening.

We really hope you enjoy our house as much as we do and are comfortable and relaxed while you stay with us. Please let us know what you think and what we can do to make Casa Madina more comfortable for you.

What makes this property unique

For us, it was the classic Mexican aspects of the house - the archways, the kitchen and dining room brickwork, the antique gate made into a dining room table and the tile floors - that caught our eyes. We scoured the local shops for furniture and decorations that would fit in, while also bringing some touches from our trips overseas.
