This is a extremely private site with a cozy (yes it is warm in winter) but hi-tech Quonset shaped Unit* on the Russian River. Our property is part of a network of 80 Hunting clubs and you can join our network or stay as a potential member. As a guest you will be given info on how to apply for the hunting and fishing club which gives you access to 80 or so properties (including this one) for one fee. NO MOSQUITOS! Running water, electricity, DirectTV, all cooking gear, it's glamping (glamorous camping) at its finest. You have the best of both worlds, you feel like you are camping, but has all the amenities found you would miss. Unit is ready for night if temps drop, we have forced air heaters and a wood stove. It's not just glamping: explore your wild side, we have Kayaks, ATVs, a Drift Boat, an 8 wheel amphibious vehicle to go river and winery touring, archery equipment, and I will teach you to fly fish and/or shoot a bow. The Russian River is the main attraction but the Casino and the village of Geyserville with 4 restaurants and 2 convenience stores are only minutes away. Wine tasting at Zialena is adjacent to the property and many wineries are nearby. Fishing is good to excellent for small mouth bass and steelhead trout. Kayaking and the best swimming river in California! Kayak rentals are available as well as river shuttles for an excellent kayak run! There are several miles of river near the lodge with decent holding areas for trout and salmon. This river is excellent for fly casting as there are many sandbars without obstruction to your back casts. We encourage bank fishing and patiently fishing each hole while you walk along the river.
If you have flotation/pontoon type device or some other vessel, we can drop you off upriver for a float to our place or pick you up if you prefer to leave from the Unit and head down river to the next bridge. The river itself is very isolated from civilization in this 16 mile stretch, despite its proximity to the Bay Area. You feel as if you are in a wilderness setting, thanks to the huge vineyards providing a buffer to any development, roads or highways. It is not a river with lots of fast water, and early in the year you may have to drag your pontoon boat or whatever over a few shallow spots.
The fish average 6 to 8 pounds, and, like all steel head, fight like demons, and are either wild or hatchery born. Roe, lures, and flies all work well. The regulations prevent the use of bait until later in the season, so make sure you check rules before you soak some roe.
The lodge unit has three large beds and a fully stocked camp kitchen, Satellite TV, mini bar and inside and outside dining area. The campsite area has a fire ring, 3 burner propane stove, sink, pots, pans and utensils.
As previously mentioned, no permanent structures are allowed, so a small shed shaped tent covers a flush toilet and heated shower. Nothing fancy, it has to be light enough to be moved, but it works.
Geyserville and River Rock Casino are minutes away and the town has several outstanding restaurants, a really unique bar and a coffee shop for breakfast. The Casino's food is good to great, too, as a buffet. I am a licensed and bonded fishing guide. I will advise you free of charge on where to fish, but there will be $100 fee for basic guiding, $200 if on the drift boat or ATV’s. We can accommodate up to 6 people on 3 large beds and 2 couches. We assume at least 2 of you will sleep together, ha ha. NOTE: The nightly rate reflects the cost for the first 2 guests, with each additional guest over two costing $25 per person / per night. * this state of the art unit is a $24,000 US Armed Service's unit designed for rapid deployment in harsh environments found in the Middle East and Afghanistan. It has a very ingenious closed air insulation lining for warmth or repelling heat in summer. Again, it would be best if your mindset is "light camping", due to this site's proximity to the river, no permanent building is allowed. So many amenities are creatively installed, such as the bathroom which is designed to be picked up an moved manually It is thus made to be lightweight and lacks sheetrock, tile etc., but is functional. During the summer, the water pump next door may come on in which case we will reimburse you on a per hour basis. (your payment divided by number of hours it runs) We do not discuss hunting here in public, but suffice to say we have secret locations at private areas for our hunting club members and guests. As a guest you will be given info on how to apply for the hunting and fishing club which gives you access to 80 or so properties (including this one) for one fee.

William was insanely welcoming and caring for me and my little group and checked in frequently to make sure we had everything we needed to have the best possible experience at his location! We will definitely be coming back!

Thanks I enjoyed having you as much as you enjoyed the area. Look forward to seeing you again, and thanks so much for taking care of the place.
Area was scenic and close enough to freeway, but felt miles away. Tent, beds, camping equipment was plentiful and William, the host, was friendly, attentive and helpful. Shower was the only thing not 100% since water sprayed a little from hose and did not flow out of showerhead (maybe just needed a new gasket or tightening?). ...but awesome to even have a shower! Area was nicely dimly lit at night and felt safe and secure.

Interesting property
The property is as described. However, the floor of the tent is very uneven and difficult to navigate. The shower and toilet are in a separate tent and you must be quite nimble to navigate getting in and out. Overall, I cannot in good conscience recommend this property.

I am perplexed as John says it is as described, then nonsensically has issues with those descriptions. We note the camps flooring in the House Rules/things to watch for section.
It is a tent, after all as I noted Upon arrival he is informed like all other guests that per government prohibition of permanent structures on a flood plain, everything is constructed has to be of a temporary or portable nature. Not sure why nimbleness is such a issue, its two steps into shower structure. I suppose any step requires a degree of adroit maneuvering for humans.
Not everyone enjoys the outdoors, it is interesting to note he did not fairly point out what everyone else does: the serene natural surroundings or the turn key set up of the camp's fire, kitchen and bbq area. I wonder if John has ever set up a camp in his life, not that it is hard, but our site does it with extreme comfort and convenience. Seems he does not appreciate that as a matter of ignorance, so it is not his fault. I do believe a 2 star rating is unfair, the place is "as described" plus warm, clean and well set up with supplies, so I do hold him accountable, and not pointing out anything positive like everyone else would does even if there are issues. Not cool!

Perfect One Night Stay/Wish We Had More Time
Came to William's spot for a Saturday afternoon one evening stay. William guided us into the property, helped us carry our things down to the tent, showed us how to use everything and then gave us our space. He brought down a few extras that we asked him for as well. The walk down to the river was great. Very relaxing! Tent had everything that we would need. Easy to cook out on the BBQ. Stoves too for more cooking. Great place to build a campfire and set out until late night. Small refrigerator keep food and drinks cool too. Heater kept us warm, beds were comfortable. Went to winery across the street too, great wines, very friendly staff, would highly recommend. Bathroom was great too, toilet is just like the one I have at home! Didn't use the shower, but was there if needed. Really enjoyed watching basketball games on satellite TV as well! If anyone likes camping with all the comforts of home, then this is the place for you. William will make sure that you have everything that you need, just text him! He also gave us our privacy while making sure that we had everything that we needed. Thanks for everything, would not hesitate to book again!

Quirky Glamping Experience
We knew this place would be a little different when we booked it so were pretty much up for any adventure. It was only for one nite. It turns out this is a massive tent pitched in a field at the edge of a dry river bed. So if you think you are going to be camping by the water, get over that. It also advertised two bathrooms which was slightly misleading as one of them was a camp toilet with a small virtually unusable solar shower about 3 feet tall that doesn't warm up until 11am (although it sounds like he may have upgraded since our stay) and the other was the bathroom in the back of the owners house, way across a big field from the tent which we never ventured to use so can't comment. So again, if you are hoping for a real bathroom experience you may want to stay someplace else. However, on the up side, William the owner is quirky but sweet and very accommodating. He checked in upon our arrival to greet us and show us the ins and outs and then directed us to a great restaurant for dinner in town just a few minutes away. And he came back when we returned from dinner to make sure we had everything we needed for the night. There is a deck with table and chairs outside the tent that while rustic provided some great star viewing and we sat out quite a while before bed just chatting and enjoying the quiet night and nature. The beds were comfortable enough although they were also a bit quirky, mine had a giant stuffed bear at the foot of it. I let the bear stay the night. There was also a leather couch -- quite comfy and table and chairs. The floor of the tent (as advertised) is a bit uneven but it is covered with several layers of fabric and carpet and felt quite clean for a tent and fine to walk about barefoot. I would say if you are looking for unique experience and can forego some of the comforts of a real bathroom, this is a great place. If you are looking for modern conveniences, look elsewhere.

Thanks for the input, yes we have a shower now with full time hot water. Thanks for being fair in pointing out we have completed that upgrade.
The proximity of the river varies with flow, at times it is within 50 feet, but we disclosed that currently it is 400 feet away. Please look at the pictures we placed as well.
The Hut noses into the levee's treeline, so yes, it is partially in an open field.
Please remember (as stated) no permanent structures are allowed this close to the river, so the bathroom has to be movable. No sheetrock or tile is possible.
It is otherwise a operable, though small, bathroom. It's height is a little more than 6 feet, the height given was just a bit of facetious humor, I think.
Thanks for the fair review and being a great guest and taking care of our quirky bear!
PS We are getting ready for steelhead guided fishing operations (by boats and ATV's) in combination with camping for this fall and winter. Please book here or look for our other listing "Fishing Lodge Hut"
Me and my wife spent a night in the tent because we wanted to experience the outdoors and not stay at your standard hotel/motel. While we loved the grittiness of the tent and camp area, we loved the amenities provided that were used to at home (DirecTV, fridge, stove). William was very helpful with the check in and set up, but gave us our space so we really felt secluded and private. The walking trails were fun to explore and the wide open camping area was great for our dog to roam. Our only regret was staying here for one night instead of multiple. Will definitely be trying to come back here with a bigger group in the future.
My Son and I had a great time here. It was rustic enough to feel like camping, but with enough additional amenities to make it very comfortable. William is a great host. He taught my son to fish, and enabled him to catch his first two fish! We loved the whole experience, and will be back.
Internet description did not accurately describe the property. The property host is very accommodating and friendly. We were not comfortable with the cleanliness or with the supplies that were described in the description. This is a very rustic accommodation. For those that want a camping experience and do not have camping equipment this would be an adequate property. There are beds, a flush toilet and shower, and limited lighting. The camp host was available when needed. For those that want an outdoor camping experience, this site provides that with dirt and much of the inconvenience of true outdoor camping.
We would have been more satisfied by being more prepared for the conditions. The property description led us to believe camping conditions were more adequate, particularly considering the nightly rate. Our perceived value for our stay would be rated one star. Based on the nightly rate and the property description our expectations were not met. For those considering this property, just be prepared for more rustic conditions.

Kevin owns a local bnb and exploited me and my site for his own purposes...He was sour from the moment he arrived and his agenda was to further his rep as a demanding guest thinking people would conclude his bmb is exceptional. You can contrast his comment with all the other reviews and make you own judgement, but it seems evident something exploitive is going on.
Nice spot for a quick weekend trip. Located in the thick of Sonoma wine country. Hiking, biking and fishing nearby. William was very nice and welcoming. Only minor negatives were one of the bedding setups was a little musty and at night a couple atvs went driving next to our tent which wasn’t ideal. Other than that everything was great.

Great for adventurous families
This is a unique place with plenty of room and privacy. All the amenities you need to camp comfortably. And William is a wonderful, attentive host that knows how to add to the fun, especially for the kids.
My high school friends and I wanted to go camping while visiting the wineries. We wanted to enjoy the outdoors, grill fish & steak and reminisce over a bonfire. But we wanted creature comforts, such as a real bed, TV and internet access. So this place was the perfect glamping site for us. We were all girls and we felt very safe. A surprise bonus was the host's adorable dog, Baxter. He was such a sweetie. William was a wonderful host. He was just a text away and made sure we had everything we needed. A big plus was the site's proximity to great wineries and hiking areas. It was about 10 minutes away from the Francis Coppola winery, where we had lunch the next day. It's also not far from the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, which is an absolute must-see. In short, we were literally happy campers. Thanks William & Baxter!

Relaxed, cozy, accommodating!
This place is just secluded enough that there's privacy and a sense of isolation, and Will is just a call or text away if anything is needed. It's just a short walk from the river, and has all the basic necessities. Had a great time fishing and hiking around, and look forward to a longer stay and kayaking or taking the ATVs out next time! Thank you Will!

Amazing Glamping
This was a great trip in a fun location. The owner has done everything to make this a memorable experience. The tent was fun and quirky. There is a fire pit and grill onsite as well. The site backs up into a river bed, which was fun to go visit. The owner saw to our every need. Highly recommended for families or couples.

Interesting Experience.
William was very kind and attentive. The place was about what I expected except; there was some leakage from the rains, the wet straw made it hard to breath, the bathroom was not at all what I expected. William told us this was a work in progress and I must agree with him. It was definitely camping with a huge tent, two beds, and electricity.

Thanks for the input, always room for improvement!...As the profile says, it is best to have the mindset of camping but with all the comforts most people would miss while away from home. The best of both worlds.
The Hut has been up for short while, and this was the first rain. Leak was isolated to one area, near the fridge, and is now fixed. Sorry about that. Speaking of rain, nothing is more depressing sometimes when inclement weather upsets plans. So I hope people factor that in when reading this review.
Please also understand, as mentioned, no permanent structures are allowed this close to the river. We have to be creative with some of the amenities. The bathroom is designed to be manually lifted and moved, so lacks heavy features such as sheet rock and tile.
The new toilet operates flawlessly, however.
Since this review was written we have replaced the solar shower with fully functioning shower.
Not-so-far-in-the-future plans include a cast iron (which I have already purchased) bath/hot tub, placed to see the sunset and soak.
If anyone likes steelhead fishing, during the winter I am adding not only glamping but a fishing lodge type operation. We will run boats from Cloverdale to our site. Please book now.

About the host
Hosted by William
Mother was born 1927 in Healdsburg, but I grew up in Marin. Graduate of UC Berkeley, I am easy going and outdoorsy, part owner of a large hunting and fishing club, like to work out, enjoy reading and watching documentaries about particle physics. I am conversant in Spanish and think Buddhism is cool. I am a licensed/bonded fishing and hunting guide, fly fishing and archery instructor. I really enjoy seeing my guests relax and have fun and to share this area's charms with everyone. I like to anticipate my guest's needs so they don't have to ask.
Why they chose this property
I got a call, and, this property was available for a great price. I knew it was good, but, once living here for awhile, I realized how I had underestimated HOW good it is!! That is because the vineyards (which operate to block access to the river), the area is devoid of people for miles in both directions. It has been operating as a hunting club since 2009, and I added these accommodations a couple of years ago for members and guests.
What makes this property unique
No permanent building, just something portable like our unit and bathrooms, are allowed this close (by county edict) to the river so you won't find anything like it. Lots of space and comforts, you feel you are insulated from civilization, and it is very peaceful. No bugs! This area is strangely lacking in insects, especially mosquitos, plus we have netting everywhere. The river is a short walk, and something like 16 miles of it are accessible and you won't see anyone once you start exploring. In the winter the unit warms up in 3 minutes with our blown air heater, really cozy, and maybe you caught an unforgettable steelhead. Fishing, kayaking and swimming are very popular, the water quality is excellent here on the upper Russian, and very warm in summer. Fishing is good to excellent, smallmouth bass are renowned for their fighting spirit. The winter run of steelhead can be good, and is at least fair from year to year. There are excellent pools holding fish nearby. There is a Winery across the street from the main house, and many more are close by. Coppola's has a museum with tons of his movie memorabilia and is a can't miss destination. River Rock Casino is less than 5 minutes away. We rent ATV's and Kayaks if you are interested, and will take you fishing with a professional guide. We do not dicuss hunting here in public, but suffice to say we have secret locations at private areas. We do not discuss for our members and guests. hunting here in public, but suffice to say we have secret locations at private areas
