Low-country lagoon living @ Number Twelve, Palmetto Dunes
Experience life on the gorgeous 11-mile lagoon in a private home with a contemporary take on an arts-and-crafts-inspired, low-country style. With beautiful lagoon views from the house, deck and private backyard pool, direct lagoon access from the dock, and hand-built Amish furniture, come enjoy simple low-country lagoon living at Number Twelve.
Nestled in beautiful Palmetto Dunes, Number Twelve is a totally remodeled home with garage access on 3/4 acre with 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths that sleeps and accommodates 12 with plenty of room for the whole group to gather. Sleep in one of the three California-King bedrooms, the bunk room with additional Queen, or in the family room on the Queen-sized wall bed.
Inside the house, hang out in the vaulted family room playing games at the game table or trying your skill at foosball overlooking the pool and deck or even enjoy a workout on the Peloton bike. Enjoy views of the lagoon from the open-concept living areas; chat with the cook from the adjoining Carolina room; create a buffet on the kitchen's ample quartz island; or gather together to sit comfortably at the dining table built for twelve. When you need a break, escape to one of the reading nooks by a window or one of the bedrooms for a restful sleep in one of our large, comfortable beds.
Outside in the backyard, relax in the sun on the back deck or tanning/splash area, exercise against the BaduJet current, or escape the heat in the private pool. Experience the sea breeze from the yard and enjoy jumping fish, pelicans, egrets, herons from the private lagoon dock bench. Catch a glimpse of a deer passing through the backyard. Play games in the spacious yard, savor a meal on the outdoor farmstyle table and benches, or just relax in the hot-tub before heading back inside. The deck off the house has a cable railing that blends into the lagoon views, and includes a locking gate that keeps toddlers from wandering down the steps to the pool. At night, enjoy the glowing blue fireglass around the fire pit on the deck and the spectacular color illuminated from the pool and hot tub. The backyard space is a tropical oasis which provides lots of privacy for family and guests.
If you’re wanting entertainment, food or shopping, Number Twelve is located in the desirable Palmetto Dunes Resort, just minutes from Towne Center at Shelter Cove and some of the best amenities the island has to offer. If activity is what you’re after, take a jog or a bike ride along numerous scenic bike paths, kayak on the lagoon with one of our two single kayaks or the double kayak off the kayak launch, Catch and Release fishing off the dock (15 and younger don’t need a license), reserve a tee-time at one of the many nearby golf courses, don your shorts and tennis racket, or grab your bucket and shovel to take the short 7 minute walk down to the ocean beach.
Whether you’re in the mood to escape, to re-connect, to relax or to explore, Number Twelve has something for you and for your whole group. Our family invites you to come experience low-country lagoon living from our home at Number Twelve.
This executive home provides so many options for your group.

About the host
Hosted by Dale & Susan Huffman
My husband Dale and I have 5 children and have been married for 40 years. Dale's father had the opportunity to purchase land in HHI before it had become developed. He passed on the opportunity since "it was nothing but marshland". We couldn't help but smile at his Dad's remark when we purchased this home. Dale's mother, Louise, took pride in her South Carolina camellias, and we are delighted to have many varieties that she enjoyed.
We currently live in Indiana, but are delighted to be part of SC again. I am from Tacoma, WA and enoy the beauty of HHI as much as the Pacific Northwest. We hope to retire here in this home in the next couple of years.

Why they chose this property
We wanted a retirement home that would be a gathering place for our adult children to enjoy with us when they visit. Dale is from South Carolina and still has family nearby. It seemed so right to plan for our retirement home here in the state where Dale grew up, and in a wooded space that I was accustomed to in the Pacific Northwest -minus the palm trees of course.
We first saw the home and knew it was the place for us. It had sat vacant for almost 10 years and was in need of a lot of care. Dale and I have a vision for potential, and we were drawn to the quiet, peaceful, wooded setting on the lagoon. We started to implement our vision and after a 1 year full-time total remodel, we have the house of our dreams. We furnished it with Amish furniture created near our home in Indiana. We look forward to becoming 'snow birds' in the near future, enjoying the mild winters and the activities that Palmetto Dunes and Hilton Head Island affords. Down the road we would love to live here full time...so please take good care of our home:)

What makes this property unique
Our open concept home has a private bath for each of the 4 bedrooms, and additional sleeping space with the wall bed in the Great Room. One of our favorite spaces is the massive island with seating for 6 where you can chat, watch TV from the Great Room, or just be centrally involved in the common space. We were careful to design a dining room that could accommodate all of our family around one table, because we love eating all together. The dining room wave light is so very special, since Dale and I purchased it as our aniversary gift to each other. And we just love all the views of the lagoon from so many of the rooms! We added the Carolina space footprint to our new remodel, and it is the perfect relaxing spot that ties in the other open concept spaces.
We wanted to design a pool that would do the trick as a 'Granny Trap' for our children and grandchildren. So we decided to add the BaduJet for swimming resistance and Boogy board play, and the shallow tanning shelf with bubblers for our littlest grandchildren. The spillover from the hot tub to the tanning shelf, and the edge of the tanning shelf to the pool provides relaxing enjoyment of the sound and beauty of water. We planned the layout of the porcelain Savannah tile around the pool to enhance the outdoor common space for everyone to enjoy, and designed the deck space to enjoy late night talks around the fire pit.
Plus we are just steps from the Atlantic Ocean! A short 7 minute walk with our beach wagon, cooler, umbrella, chairs, and toys takes you into another world of sand, surf, and fun. Or just take a walk, or see the sunset along the miles of pristine beach in both directions.
I haven't even mentioned the golfing opportunities, the miles of groomed biking trails, close access to restaurants and shopping, outdoor water activities, tennis & pickleball, concerts, historic sites, boat tours, or nearby historic cities. Our Welcome Letter details these exciting activities. Do as little or as much as you desire.
