About this property

Heavenly Enchanting Waterfall in Hilo

Stay in our unique enchanting waterfall house in a botanical paradise at the family run Mauna kea Cloudforest Bioreserve and Farm above the unspoiled heavenly Hamakua coastline. Just minutes from downtown Hilo, our beautiful kid friendly 2 bedroom Ohana situated in front of an amazing private waterfall with a large swimming hole and over a half mile of private riverfront nature preserve is everyone's dream. Native birds and the Hawaiian hawk make their home here in the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve. Let the sounds of the waterfall and the fresh mountain tropical air rejuvenate you.

You will be renting our private kid friendly waterfall house right in front of the Kikala waterfall. The Ohana is an enchanting 2-level cottage surrounded on three sides by a beautiful cloud forest and next to the Kikala stream. The tropical mountain beauty that will surround you here is unsurpassable, and the views are breathtaking. The most spectacular waterfall and swimming hole of the Kikala preserve is right in front the house, and unlike other locations, the river runs right through the middle of our farm, so we can offer you access to over 1/2 mile of private stream front with incredible vistas that rival National Parks. And most of all, on our farm, kids can be kids, there's a ton of space to run around and play, pet our goats, cuddle with our cows, and splash in the river. You will feel like you are in a remote wilderness yet you will only be 12 minutes from downtown Hilo.

Waterfall, river, nature biopreserve, petting farm with goats and sheep, fruit trees, meadows. Please note that all outdoor spaces are shared. While our waterfall is private, meaning that it's entirely surrounded by 14 acres of private pasture and cloud forest, the waterfall is not for your exclusive use, although most of the time you will have it to yourself.

Our space is a great space for families with kids and for kid friendly travelers. You will be a guest in our private Ohana on the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve. Since we actively maintain the biopreserve, it's very likely that you will see us around. We pride ourselves in our Aloha and we will welcome you on our farm as family. We have two children who aren't shy, and we love to host other families. Kids are most definitely welcome.

Our farm is a working farm, with fowl and goats and crops. You will hear the animals and may also meet members of our farm Ohana.

This is a cloud forest so expect a mix of sunshine, clouds, midst, fog and rain pretty much every day. You will be comfortable in shorts and T-shirt and you will not need AC. Even though we are only 15 minutes drive from lively downtown Hilo, you will feel like you are on a secluded retreat in the mountains overlooking the ocean, complete with waterfalls, swimming holes and nature preserve.

Wonderful Oasis
My family including 3 small children stayed here. It was such an amazing property. The view of the waterfall was spectacular, and the kids loved playing in it. Many things to do in the area that were within a 30 minute drive. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful, tranquil oasis
We absolutely loved our stay at the waterfall house. We (2 adults, 13 and 10 year old) arrived after dark (easy to find if you put in the google map coordinate given and look for the loan palm tree) to the sounds of the rain forest and slept well. It was so fun to surprise the kids with the waterfall in the morning. Bring your water shoes-a short walk down the path and over some mossy rocks to the waterfall. We had a blast swimming in the falls and climbing the rocks. Axel and his wife were a joy to chat with and we loved holding the month old baby goats. We totally recommend this place for people who love to adventure and explore. Just 15 minutes from downtown.

This property was a great fit for a two night stay for our family group. We were right in the heart of the majestic waterfall area in Hilo and gave us a real tropical rainforest feel and experience. Very humid and lots of nature sounds soothed us each night we were there and we awoke to the waterfall…felt like a little fantasy. Very nice appliances and comfortable bedding. Bring all your groceries and snacks and plan to stay and enjoy the area and your company.

Sweet little spot
We had a nice stay. We live on island, so the quirky directions were no surprise. Waterfall is pretty sparse right now, but host can’t control the weather, so that’s not a problem. There were some things that could make it feel much nicer such as: upkeep of flower boxes so you aren’t greeted with a bunch of dead plants as your first sight of the place; fix towel bar in bathroom so guests aren’t staring at a broken fixture when they are in bathroom; mop upper deck before guests arrive so they can walk out there without getting muddy feet. It’s the little touches that elevate a place from acceptable to stellar. This experience was good, but could be fabulous with just a bit more effort. Mahalo for having us.

By far my all time favorite thing to do is to be a dad to my little boys. If only we could all have the awe and excitement they have for discovering the amazing universe we live in. Somehow as adults we just forget. My boys are also lucky to have the most amazing mom in the world, my wife Michelle who will go to the ends of the earth for them.

I really love to be outdoors and whenever I can I am out there gardening and tending to our little botanical paradise. I love the tropics and love to travel to far away places like Southeast Asia, the islands, Thailand, well, any place tropical.

I aspire to be open minded and I like to hang out with others that share that aspiration. As a host, I'd like to get to know my guests and do my best to be a good host that will make their stay better and more fun. I am always curious to meet world travelers from other countries.

Why they chose this property

Our farm is a one in a million property featuring pastures, tropical jungle, rivers and waterfalls with swimming holes and grottos. Unlike most properties in Hawaii that feature streams as property boundaries, on our farm, the Kikala Stream is the central feature of our farm, with the main waterfall being the center of our farm and community.

Even though we are only 15 minutes from downtown Hilo, we are tucked away from it all, and you will feel like you are in a unique resort far away off the beaten path.

What makes this property unique

Waterfall, deep swimming holes, spectacular view of the ocean and Kilauea volcano, tropical jungles, pastures, friendly farm animals, well, basically lots of amazing family fun!
