Apartment Sommières historic center

Sommières is a pretty medieval town, steeped in history, on a human scale, located 28 km from Nîmes, 36 km from Montpellier, 36 km from the Cévennes (Anduze), 36 km from the sea and the Camargue.

The apartment is located in the very center of Sommières, in rue Taillade, an ancient Roman road. You can go on foot in a few minutes to the Roman bridge dating from the 1st century, or to the medieval castle overlooking the city, or to the esplanade where the locals play pétanque in the shade of the plane trees. The many shops and restaurants are at the foot of the street.

Every Saturday morning, a large market takes place in the center of Sommières. In summer, there is also a night market every Wednesday evening and every Monday evening, the Estivales take place: sales and tasting of local products and wines on site.

The last week of July begins the votive festivals: for ten days, bulls, horses, and the whole range of Camargue traditions are honored. You will witness the releases of horses and bulls in the city, the crossing of Vidourle by horses supervised by the manadiers, the Camargue races in the arenas of Sommières, but also the raft race on the Vidourle, the parade in the Ancient…

Throughout the summer, other parties are held around the area.

The region is ideal for hiking. From Sommières, there are several walks or bike rides: the walk to the Château de Villevieille (1 hour round trip), the walk to the ruins of Montredon (1 hour 30 round trips), the Quarries of Junas (4 hours round trip) , the greenway (30 km cycle path passing through the vineyards)…

In the surrounding area, magnificent steps await you: the ascent of Pic Saint-Loup, a walk in the Camargue, in the Cévennes ... You will find in the apartment two hiking guides accessible to all.

Other activities are possible in Sommières: swimming in the Vidourle near the mill, tree climbing, canoeing, large inflatable and aquatic playground for children. In the surrounding area you can swim in Lecques (7 km from Sommières) in the Vidourle, or at Lake Crès (22 km), or in the Gardon near Anduze (36 km), or even at the sea (beaches at Grau du Roi, Palavas-les -Flots, Sète, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer…).

In the surroundings, you can visit Nîmes and its arenas, cross the Pont du Gard and swim under it, descend rivers in canoes (Gorges du Gardon, Vidourle, Ardèche gorges ...), visit the Haribo museum near Uzès , visit the Bambouseraie near Anduze… The activities are multiple. You will find leaflets in the apartment to help you plan your days, and you can also inquire at the tourist office.
