About this property

Blue House - Private Location

Blue House is located in a private setting on Dow Road just outside of Deer Isle village and close to Lily Pond, a favorite swimming spot. While not on water, this cottage is just minutes from the ocean and is perfect for an inexpensive family getaway to the beautiful and rocky coast of Maine. It is also a great overflow house to rent along with one of our other properties in the area. Deer Isle is a favorite vacation spot for visitors who return year-after-year to experience the quiet, unpretentious island of Deer Isle/Stonington, accessible by bridge, and home of lobstermen, boat builders, chefs, artists and writers offering unique shops, restaurants and galleries. Take a day trip to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor and other area towns or just relax, hike and enjoy the scenery of the surrounding area. Internet access included.

Blue House stay
This is a very old house with a lot of renovations to make it more enjoyable. The pros of this rental are the overall cleanliness, the location, the rental cost and the responsiveness of the rental agency. The cleaning crew do a very good job cleaning the house and the linens and towels supplied are very nice. The house is on a quiet dirt road off a main road yet everything on the island is easily accessible, (there is no driveway you need to drive on the yard up to the house). The nightly rate is very reasonable considering it's in Maine and most other properties have gotten expensive. When I had questions prior to our stay the rental agency responded the next day. The cons are the kitchen, a moldy/mildewy smell on the first floor and an overwhelming sulfur smell and taste to the water. The kitchen is strangely arranged but that's due to the age of the house. It did make prepping and cooking awkward. This summer has been extremely wet so far in New England so the house has a strong odor when you walk in. Maybe in a drier year it is not as bad. The worst thing for me was the water, it is from a well. I grew up drinking well water and it's the best water I've ever had. The sulfur odor is very strong in the first floor bathroom especially when running the shower. The taste is the worst in the morning and gets a bit better throughout the day. I would recommend bottled water or a portable filter system like Brita.

I've never had to leave a lodging early and this is my first negative review. One of the worst experiences I've ever had, with both the property management company and the rental, which wasn't properly prepared for visitors. At least the company partially refunded us. 1. Check-in instructions were not clear on how to enter the house so I called at 1pm the day of check-in to clarify, no one answered so I left a voicemail with no response. When we arrived at 5pm, all doors were locked and there was no lockbox. I called the office number again with no response. Luckily one of the windows was unlocked so we were able to get in. 2. The house reeked of mold and mildew and hadn't been aired out for several months. We ran several fans with open windows our entire stay to be able to breathe at all. Everyone had difficulty breathing, some had allergic reactions. 3. The front room short-circuited and lost electricity. I called the property manager who said someone would be there "within the hour." Someone finally came two hours later and fixed the issue. 4. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, one of our group slept in the car the last night. Two of us had skin reactions potentially from the sheets or something else in the house. The property manager did refund half the rental cost, but we also left a day early and found other accommodations. This house could be really nice, but it was not ready for guests. We left the place cleaner than we found it, even having to buy trash bags.

What a gem!
We really enjoyed our week here and Deer Isle is a great escape from everything. The charming house was full of history and well stocked with supplies in the kitchen. Also, lots of books and board games. The trash disposal wasn't clear and we didn't see trash cans so we brought our garbage to the transfer station nearby. We hope to return some day!

Classic country cottage
Charming and cozy well-maintained 19th Century cottage. Convenient location on quiet street; handsome grounds with large yard. Good choice for couple or small family. Steep stairs to bedrooms.
