Cute rustic cabin. Retro original 60s-70s style but everything is in great condition. Has everything you could need for a great getaway. Only saw one restaurant (pizza) in Shingletown and not much else around so we meal planned and bought groceries at local grocery store for all meals. Stream in back is amazing to sit and relax as is upstairs balcony. WiFi worked great. Sun room. Outdoor patio with fire pit looked inviting but we didn’t use it.

Love the location

Love the location, close to lassen, Burney falls, hat creek and more. House was well stocked with essentials and a lot of room to to enjoy. Maybe needs a little TLC in some areas but I would definitely stay there again and plan on it.

Great stay in a great place

We had a wonderful stay in the house which is in a very quiet place. House is comfortable, very well equipped and the master bedroom is awesome with large windows, you have the feeling to be in the trees. Outdoor is very nice too to appreciate the evenings. It’s only 20’ from Lassen Volcanic NP which is a great place to visit for several days: hiking Lassen peak with a top view, swimming in summit lake, visiting the small but well done museum, take good time at manzanita lake, etc… we stayed only 2 days and more would be welcome. Definitely a great experience to stay here.

Aptly named--A very peaceful retreat!

We had a very restful stay at Battle Creek Retreat and loved both the house and its environs. We made frequent trips down to the edge of the creek to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the sights and sounds of the water. Proximity to Lassen Park is a big plus and we went there to hike, swim, kayak, and/or picnic each day. Kathy & Peggy made us feel entirely welcome and we look forward to returning!

Great place to stay

The house is very comfortable. The owner is very careful, we find a lot of supply in the house, almost everything we need for living there. And the owner is very kind, and always ready to offer the help! My wife said it's the best cabin we ever stay. Thanks so much! We will come back if we can find opportunities to visit Lassen again!

Beautiful accommodations in quiet setting

This is a lovely home that can accommodate multiple guests. Plenty of room to spread out. Has every amenity. Well-stocked kitchen. There was difficulty reaching the owner to check in. We never received an access code until 45 minutes prior to check in time. It is in a remote area with limited services nearby, which made the situation even more difficult and stressful.

Cabin in the mountains

We spent 5 days on the property and a few days with our grandchildren. They are 7 and 10 years old. The time of year had some snow on the property and the kids enjoyed playing outside. We also cooked some hot dogs and smores over a wood fire outside. They have a trail down to the creek which we utilized. Over all a good experience.

Perfect mountain retreat

This charming house in the woods is beautifully equipped and was very comfortable for our group of 4 friends. We spent two days walking in Lassen National Park and the third visiting the surprisingly good wineries 10 miles away in Manton. Deer visited the yard in the mornings. Evenings were spent barbecuing under the stars at the outdoor tables, enjoying the sounds of the creek below the house. Lassen was uncrowded, beautiful and its geological history was amazing. Local shopping in Shingletown was basic but sufficient for extra items to add to groceries bought in Reno en route to the house. Highly recommended!

Convenient to Lassen Volcanic NP

My wife, adult son, and I stayed at this VRBO during a recent two day trip to Lassen Volcanic NP. We enjoyed reading about the history of the home and the comfortable sofa and fireplace. The host had all the amenities available. The home has a washer and dryer that I didn’t recall seeing in the listing. It is located about 15 minutes from the entrance to the NP and Lake Manzanita. The home is a little dated (red carpet throughout that looks like the original carpet when the home was built). The beds were comfy and the outdoor setting is peaceful with plenty to explore. Great home to stay at if you’re visiting Lassen. There’s a wonderful pizza restaurant in Shingletown (Pioneer Hillside Pizza) to grab a hot meal after a long day visiting Lassen.

Wonderful holiday get-away

We found the Battle Creek Retreat to be the perfect location for our two families to spend the New Year's holiday. There was plenty of room for numerous activities to take place; i.e. movies, puzzles, cards, hide and seek, and playing by the creek. The house was warm upon arrival, and was cozy for the entire stay. We appreciated having easy access to wood and kindling for the fire, and the Monitor heater worked great. Access to snow was only 15 minutes away at Lassen Park. We had plenty of bedding and towels for 8 people; we also appreciated the supply of paper products such as paper towels, Kleenex, napkins, and toilet paper. The Keurig coffee/hot cocoa machine was a big hit with the kids. The fenced-in patio area was a nice surprise and allowed the dog to explore outside. The kitchen had a good supply of cooking utensils, dishes, silverware, and mugs. Guests should bring condiments, spices, and baking supplies. Overall, we couldn't ask for anything more; we all loved it and had a relaxing stay. We would have loved to stay longer. We highly recommend this retreat, and may try staying here this summer.

Comfortable and lovely home

We stayed in this house for our Spring Break, coming down from Portland OR. This house is nestled in the woods in a beautiful location. When you look out the windows all you see are trees and it gives the sense of being in a treehouse. The property is stunning. The house itself exudes the love and attention of its owners. It is obvious this house is a family treasure and its a privilege to be a part of its history. The inside is absolutely adorable with the wood everywhere and the pictures online don't do it justice. The layout of the home is comfortable and roomy, with big areas if you want group time, as well as enough places for solitude. The beds were one of my favorite things....so comfy and inviting! The mattresses were all in excellent condition and obviously high quality. But more than that...even the sheets and the comforter made me think I was in an upscale hotel. This isn't a place furnished with castoffs. The kitchen is well stocked and the wine and coffee cups are a wonderful touch. There is a fireplace as well as a wood stove and the wood and kindling are in abundance. They have even taken the time to make fire starters and have kindling of differing sizes to make fire building easy. When we arrived the fire was all built and all we had to do was light a match. This is a house to go to even if you don't want to see any of the sights nearby. It's a wonderful getaway that recharges and relaxes. I can't recommend it enough and we will most certainly be back. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of staying in your home!

Wish we were still there....

My family is a regular when it comes to exploring new places and renting cabins/homes to rest our weary heads. We booked this home when planning our trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, and was just hoping to find it to be a comfortable place to come back to after a day of hiking. WOW....this home exceeded our expectations in all possible ways. The home was beautiful and fully equipped with anything you could need to spend time away from home. The beds and furniture were so very comfortable, the outdoor areas were so relaxing (fire pit, bistro table under a gazebo, picnic table, outdoor cushioned furniture, another deck down by the creek with chairs to enjoy nature, a deck off the master bedroom....), a bottle of local wine and fixings for s'mores left for us to enjoy, fluffy towels, a keurig with everything you need for your morning coffee, an enclosed sitting room where the children enjoyed doing one of the puzzles they found....the list could go on and on. Kathy and her family have such attention to detail when opening up their home to others. We all said that we wished we had more time there as we would have loved to take advantage of the peacefulness and comfort more than we had the time for. In dealing with Kathy and her sister, Janis, prior to our arrival they were both so kind and helpful. Truly the type of people you feel you have known for a long time despite only corresponding via email. Kathy and family, thank you!!! As parents, we strive to provide our children with happy memories and wonderful experiences when possible. Staying in your cabin, where it was quite apparent that your family had made wonderful memories, we were able to do this. We will certainly be back if we ever plan to get away for some relaxation. To others looking....this is an absolute gem!!!

The inside of this house is dated. Also, though 50-65 outside, we also had difficulty getting the room temperature to a reasonable level for the first 12-24 hours using the heater alone (though we didn't use the fireplaces). It was clean and well-equipped.

Not happy with the stay

This was supposed to be a stay for 8 people. I was hoping there would be beds for 8, but there was accommodation for 6 only. The stay does not say that 2 people would have to sleep on the floor. Even the floor mattress were terrible. We could barely sleep. I would have rather stayed in a hotel at this cost. This spoiled our trip. Secondly the internet was very bad. I had some really important work to be completed, but It did not work. It barely worked for an hour and then stopped working again. There is barely any cell reception and connecting with the owners was very tough. Even the landline was down. I wish the owners had shared these details. The sink in the first floor bathroom kept getting clogged. The cooling did not work and the rooms upstairs got very hot. There were big black ants in the kitchen slab where we were cooking and had to keep all our food covered. I was expecting better services for the price that we paid for a 2 night stay. I would not recommend staying here again.

Amazing access to Lassen!

My family and I loved the rustic feel of the home. There was a lot of space and the inside was clean. We had all we needed to cook homemade dinners and breakfasts and pack lunches for exploring. We had easy access to Lassen Volcanic National Park, about 15 minutes to the northwest entrance. The neighbors we met were all kind. On checkout day, we ended up with a flat tire and the property managers were communicative and understanding. (Closest tire shop was over 40 min away!)

We really enjoyed our stay! The cabin is beautiful and has all the amenities needed for a comfortable family stay. Kids really enjoyed the open space, the walk to the creek and also the fire pit to make smores. We would love to visit again!

What makes this property unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color. Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed. On the back patio there is a gazebo, firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.
