About this property
Fernwood's Rustic Elegance-Now booking long term vacation stays-90 day minimum
Enjoy Rustic Elegance in this 3 separate Bedroom, 2 Bath Home on Top of Ft Mountain--just off Scenic Hwy 52 (easy access) from Ellijay or Chatsworth GA. Only 1 1/2 short Hours from Atlanta, Fernwood, is a house of windows that adjoins the Cohutta Wilderness with views from every room. Steeped in History and wildlife, you can enjoy the spectacular views from the covered decks, sit around the stacked firepit, have a fun game of Horseshoes, Corn Hole and Darts or relax and unwind on the covered porch as the sun goes down on the Mountain. Fernwood lends itself well to active Families, Hikers and Bikers and Groups who love competition, but is also ideal for those who are just looking for a quiet place for Rest and Relaxation with Spectacular Views. Ft Mountain State Park is only 2 short miles away and boasts beautiful hiking trails, paddle boarding, canoeing, Miniature Golf and swimming in the Lake, plus an Ancient Rock Wall built by the first inhabitants sometime between 500 and 1500 C.E. A Complimentary Gate and Parking Pass to the Park is offered during your stay, to be returned when you leave.
Besides being only 2 miles from the State Park, Fernwood is also about 13 miles from Carters Lake which boasts over 3,200 acres of surface water where Boats of all types can be rented by the Hour or Day. Fishing for Striper Bass is one of the favorite pastimes at Carter's Lake and the dam.
Fernwood is also close to the Wine Vineyards and Apple Houses around Ellijay. Many of the wineries offer food and wine pairings and live Music. Then in October, the Apple Houses show off their wonderful Mountain Apples and the Apple Festival goes on at the Fairgrounds for two weekends in a row. From Fernwood you're only 20 minutes away from Ellijay or Chatsworth down the paved Scenic Hwy to Groceries, Restaurants and Shops without encountering long and sometimes treacherous gravel roads. The Cohutta Wilderness adjoins our property with endless trails for hiking, biking or exploring the National Wildlife Area. It is minutes to waterfalls, overlooks, the Pinhoti trail and the highest elevation lake in Georgia, Lake Conasauga.
Owners can be available to answer any questions you may have about the home or assist you with any problems that arise with the water system, generator, television, etc. They have a separate Owners Suite on the property with a private entrance in the basement. There is only one door that leads directly from the Apartment to the stairwell inside the house. It has a blind deadbolt so it can be locked and unlocked only from the renter’s side. The only other access door is from the Garage to the mudroom door which has standard key deadbolts and a chain the renters can apply. The owner's suite is totally separate and isolated from every other part of the house. (Owners currently not on premises).

About the host
Hosted by Ron & Lynn Smith

We built Fernwood on this beautiful Mountain 16 years ago----moving from Atlanta----and we love it. We're Grandparents, Foodies, lovers of Music, especially country and oldies, and we're big Sports Fans-----especially Braves and Falcons, UGA and Gamecocks. Travel---Love Hilton Head and Seaside on the Gulf. Traveled to Cozumel for snorkeling and Taos for skiing. Love cooking and entertaining and this is definitely a perfect home for that. Our family loves competing in everything from Board Games, Horseshoes, Darts, Fishing, Hiking and Cooking and Fernwood Lends itself to that fun perfectly.
Why they chose this property
We traveled all over North Georgia looking for a place with both short and long range views. We found that site atop Fort Mountain which also had Carter's lake approximately 10 miles away and many small towns with excellent restaurants and shops. The area also has history dating back to at least the 11th century and the Geological history is unique to the rest of the Blue Ridge mountains. Being just 2 1/2 miles from the Ft Mountain State Park has been wonderful with all the activities they have with Hiking, Boating, Fishing. Swimming, Paddle Boarding and Camping. Our Grandsons have grown up there. We also love being right off Scenic Highway 52, especially when there is Ice and Snow on the Mountain. The GDOT takes good care of the Highway and we are among the few who can get out of the Subdivision and get to the Grocery Store. Highway noise is not a problem at all since we built our home with thick 2x6 framing and double paned windows.
What makes this property unique
Sitting high on top of Ft Mountain allows so many positives. The Views are wonderful, as we have mentioned already, but we built Fernwood to enjoy them inside and outside. On a clear night, we can see the lights of the cities 15 and 30 miles away from the two upstairs bedrooms. At Christmas we generally have a light snow on property. Home is decorated for each season and holiday. View of the mountain vistas from the front porch rockers with a cup of coffee is awe inspiring.
