About this property

Eighteen Ninety Five @Bloomingdale, NW (9 blocks from Union Station on RED LINE

If you are looking for an authentic experience do consider staying at my home during your stay in DC. I am located on a tree-lined block in the Bloomingdale neighborhood in NW. It's a neighborhood of only about 12 square blocks with many hidden treasures: unassuming dive bars, surprise parks and award-winning restaurants. Bloomingdale is sandwiched between the neighborhoods of Shaw and Eckington. It is on the border of the District’s northwest quadrant, stretching from Second Street NW to North Capitol, bordered by Florida Avenue NW to the south and Bryant and Channing Streets, NW to the north.

Eighteen Ninety Five is a spacious Victorian home with 7 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and 14 beds (8 twin beds, 6 sofa beds, and one queen). It can hold comfortably a total of 19 guests. Air beds/tatamis are available for additional persons beyond 16. I offer my home as a clean, cheap, and safe place to sleep and recharge in the Nation's Capital. It's humble and doable for a few nights. There's a kitchen in the main home as well as in the English basement apartment per your use.

The home in the main house has a dining room with a very large wood table, a living room to lounge with guests; an iron with an ironing board; hangers; and etc. PLEASE NOTE: This rental includes the English basement unit. Each unit is completely private and secure. There is a security system with a camera on the outside's entry of the home.

Graduation trip

The house was very nice , warm and inviting for my family. It was plenty of room for my family during our stay. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone. The host was very helpful and easy to communicate with during our stay. The neighbor was really nice and quiet.

Roomy and plenty of room for 18 people!

The property manager is amazing! Great communication, understanding, and helpful. Location is 10-15 minutes from DC, National Harbor and bars/clubs and restaurants. Beds are all twins/futons, so this is best for individuals who are traveling together but not so much couples who want to sleep in the same bed. No TVs but we weren't in the house much to use them anyway! There is so much to see and do in the area. Thank you for a great stay!

Perfect Girl's Trip

Dr. Gibson was very attentive and answered all our questions quickly. Her place is big and we each had our own sleeping place and like 5 bathrooms - with 7 ladies that is a plus. The place was lovely, clean and the neighborhood seemed nice and safe. With the heat we encountered that weekend it was great to arrive to a cool house with the air conditioning already running. The house worked perfect for us as we came to DC to go explore and experience DC. Thank you Dr. Gibson for a wonderful place to lay our heads each night!

Great D.C. Experience

This property was a great value for our family of 6 and our friends family of 7. You will still need to take public transit to get to all the sites but it’s a reasonable commute and we also believe using a city’s transit system is a necessary experience to get the feel for a city. There are plenty of rooms and beds. We were there to see D.C. not hang out in the home, but when we did play games and relax there was plenty of room to all do our own thing. I read the previous bad reviews and think the criticism was unwarranted based on our experience. There was some issues associated with the home being over a 100 years old and not at the top of the price list, but we didn’t pay for granite countertops and a hot tub. It’s a great value, great location and there’s plenty of room.

Thanksgiving Stay

This home is lovely with exquisite art work. Unlike some homes that fit large groups through the use of air mattresses and sofas, this home really can sleep 19 comfortably. Most of the beds are doubles and almost every room has a futon so it was great for children to have their own beds. I think it would also be great for groups of individuals traveling together but might be less so for couples wishing to sleep in the same bed. The home is in a very quiet neighborhood so it provides a nice respite from the rest of the city. There is also a playground/park a few blocks away (which is great for letting kids work out some energy). One note - there are no TVs. Not such a big deal with phones, tablets, etc. (and wifi is included!) but something to keep in mind if TV is important. Overall, it was a great stay and a very nice home for my (rather large) family to gather in for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Beware

It really pays to read the reviews. We had a group of woman and while meeting in the common area of the home, some had to stand or sit on the floor. When I booked, it was not clear that you needed to enter the exact number of people staying. If the home is advertised as sleeping 19 then the cost should be based on that and not the total number of guests as long as it does not exceed capacity. When we first arrived, we were looking for linens/ towels and there were not enough for all of us. So, while looking for more towels we opened one of the drawers and it completely feel to the floor. Our mistake was not taking a picture and reporting it immediately. We felt that the owner was aware that it was non functioning and used for staging like the rest of the furniture. But of course, she is saying that we damaged it and charged for repair but I am sure the entire thing was not worth the amount. There is nothing special about any piece of furniture in the home. I've rented many properties for multiple occasions and I must say this was the worst ever! The air conditioning is inadequate for the size home and there is no central air. The main floor was freezing, while the other floors were hot and the window units did not help. Also, just note that there are no tvs and mirrors are limited, so not ideal for 12 women. Beyond that, the glasses appeared to be clean but had to be rewashed because of soap residue. One good thing to note: the neighborhood was very nice and conveniently located.

Responsive owner, but not what we expected

We used this home as a space to enjoy our first time to Washington D.C. with our extended family - a total of 14 people. We have stayed in numerous vacation rentals and have never had an experience quite like this before. I want to preface this with saying owner was very responsive any time we had a question. Upon arrival, we were overwhelmed with our large party to experience street parking. If you do not arrive before 5pm, it is very difficult to find parking. As long as we returned around 5, each of our families were able to find parking nearby, but do expect a short walk to the house. The neighborhood overall is not the place I'd want to walk at night anyway. When we arrived in the home, we were shocked to find out there are no actual queen size beds. Be aware that it is not going to be possible to sleep more than 1 person in any bed comfortably. The listing says it is river/ water front, but it is definitely not. It is however close to the National Mall. While the home SLEEPS lots of people, it most definitely does not accommodate lots of people in the living space. The couch can only seat 3-4 people and the dining table only seats 4. So be prepared to eat some meals on the floor. There are plenty of showers and bathrooms though. The listing also states that there are dishes/ utensils for kids but we did not find that to be true. We found a small handful of plastic dishes, but thankfully we brought paper plates as these were not sufficient for our crew. When we arrived we were given very clear instructions on expectations for using this space. We were shocked to find that if you moved furniture there were fees if cleaning crew had to move them back and also fees if any dirty dishes were left in the sink. My recommendation is take lots of pictures when you arrive, and when you leave. Were were accused of breaking a decoration that is out of reach without a ladder and this ended up costing us some of our deposit even though we spent HOURS cleaning this home before checking out. When we explained that we did not break this, the owner did offer to refund us, but that is hardly the point. We left the home spotless and have pictures to prove it. We had a wonderful time seeing our nation's capitol, but we wish we had just stayed in a hotel.

Description misleading

The house claims to have seven bedrooms. More accurately: You are given access to seven sleeping areas, but two are in a condominium on a lower level with no entrance from the main house. One area is more like a back porch that is closed in, with a twin bed in it. For beds, the option says futon/sleeping couch. Just know every one of those is a small futon, except one, which is a long futon. So if you need anyone to double up, they will not have much room. If i remember right, you can sleep 15 without anyone doubling up. I need to doublecheck this, but i believe the property claimed to have parking. There is no specific parking for this home, the only available is street parking, first come first serve. Beware the book on the coffee table in the main room. It has very mature content that should not have been left out for children to see. The house was clean and the host was easy to be in contact with. The instructions for entry were clear, once you understand that there are two entrances to separate parts of the home. Be very careful with the upstairs shower; the door is tricky, and If it leaks with normal use you will lose some of your security deposit for repairs.

Lovely property, reasonable price in the city

This Bloomingdale property is really lovely with African art and high ceilings. Decorations and accommodations throughout are basic but comfy. House is clean; some things are a bit dated but the property owner was responsive if a bit prickly when asked. We had a great time during our girls weekend and location was central to many city destinations. Neighborhood is quite but dense, urban. Parking was a challenge but we used Uber/Lyft with ease.

Why they chose this property

This is my second home. I lived in it for 4 years. It is located in Bloomingdale, NW, DC, in one of the most sought after communities in the area. The homes in this neighborhood are gorgeous and stately Victorians. I no longer live here and offer it to budget travelers visiting our Nation's Capital.

What makes this property unique

The grandeur of the Victorian age is personified in the Victorian homes of Bloomingdale. The wood floors, high ceilings, and the openness reception of the first level are stunning.
