Interesting host and home
Allan has built an incredible Mayan home on the edge of the jungle yet close to Valladolid. The place is not for those seeking a hotel-like experience but we enjoyed the place for its uniqueness, the many animals, and for his amazing stories and breakfast. He provided great local recommendations as well.

What a find!
After reading the description and making the reservation we were not confident we had made a wise decision to stay here. But when we arrived we immediately felt welcomed by Allan at his extraordinary stone house, which is a work of art. The second-floor bedroom opens out onto a large patio filled with plants, looking out into the jungle. The honey he harvests is the best I've ever tasted. Allan's openness and generosity made us feel right at home and provided for. There is much to see and do within a half hour of here. We enjoyed our walk into the jungle directly from his house.

Unique stay in the jungle!
If you are looking for a unique place to stay that isn't your average VRBO, then this is it. Over 3 miles down a one lane paved road to a small isolated village within the Yucatan jungle. Allan is getting up there a bit in age and this place takes a lot of maintenance so come see it while you still can. A few things to consider before going: You probably should be able to navigate narrow stairs. You are in the jungle and there will be some bugs around (not any in the bedroom that we saw) but we were visited by some small nonstinging bees for our morning breakfast that we decided to have outside. You have to walk outside to get to the upstairs bathroom and it might have a bug or two you have to shoo away. Water gets heated via wood most of the time so may take abit to heat up (make sure he has the valves the right way if cold!) He has some quite sweet and loyal pups and cats. Allan is a bachelor and it does show time to time. Buy some honey from his own bees! Great host and had some great conversations!

Highlight of Mexico
We arrived late from Tulum and Alan made us immediately welcome. He shared great stories and has a lot of knowledge about the area. It is definitely a different kind of stay that the resorts in Tulum and Cancun, but that is exactly why we chosen this place. He provided amazing French toast made from eggs of his chickens and honey from his hive. It was overall a great experience.

Hospitality in the jungle
The house is amazing! Allan guided us all the way in, gave recommendations about places to visit in the surrounding area, and even served us a homemade breakfast. This off-the-beaten-path jungle castle is a great option for anyone looking for a touch of adventure

Graduate BS, Marine Ecology, Cornell University, 1968. 4 year service in Northern Chile in Peace Corps at Catholic University, Antofagasta, teaching and research. English teacher in Yucatan at private high school for 3 years, I'm an amateur anthropologist, not (yet) a Mayan speaker, have lived in this house continuously since 2003, returning only to visit family in California.I'm currently , but slowly ,working on a first novel about experience in Chile during the socialist government. I paint, draw and make mosaic tile floors and rooms. I'm retired, worked mostly as a licensed general building contractor in San Francisco, CA.

Why they chose this property

It's unique : I have had many guests invited with me to eat at Mayan neighbors homes. It's quiet and VERY close to nature, as are all your neighbors, but insects and mosquitoes are generally not a problem, nor are scorpions nor tarantulas ( like so many wild animals demonized by popular myths.)

What makes this property unique

You will understand better the "heart" of the Yucatan, which is predominantly a Mayan influenced society, with some colonial aspects from 500 years of Spanish and Mexican occupation. But Mayans are a vibrant culture and live in many ways as they have for at least 2000 years. You are centrally locate for visiting many Mayan ruins and both the attractions on the "Riviera Maya" and in Merida, the very lovely colonial, large city 2 hours West. Cancun is 2 hours East. Belize is 4 hours South. I provide quick walking tour e mail information of Valladolid and Merida, and lots of information from living here for 17 continuous years.
