Overland adventure with friends. Unbelievably beautiful property and even better hospitality. Good was excellent as was the service. Eric is a fantastic host!
One of the most relaxing vacations ever!! Eric is a terrific host and created an incredibly relaxing, fun and rejuvenating space. We loved the food, the drive, walks, and Bree!!! Can’t recommend it enough and can’t wait to go back!
Staying at Mt Hayden lodge was an amazing experience in one of the most beautiful settings. Eric was great at informing us of local hikes and information about the area and the lodge was warm and cozy. Definitely worth a visit!
Our trip to Ouray was amazing and the best part we stayed in a remote cabin, no clue what we signed up for when we went there, Eric the owner and host made everything easily for us to enjoy our off-road adventure thanks again for a wonderful time
High clearance vehicle, experienced trail driver necessary
Previous reviews are not representative of our experience at all. No contact from the host before the trip. We had to hire a jeep driver to get up the mountain and back down. That was 400 unexpected expense. The host didn’t seem to have been expecting us. We were fortunate to have brought a cooler full of food but didn’t feel like eating. The host was great with our grandkids. He taught them how to light a match and start a fire. They lit up the hot tub and got in it. We had a fun snowball fight. The kids enjoyed the zip line. We went on a brief hike. Host was going through some personal issues which altered the positive experience we expected to have. The place is definitely off grid but Internet was provided. That was nice to have access to the outside world in case of emergency. We checked out a day early and drove all night to get back home. We have never been so happy to be back in Texas.
We had a great 2-night stay with Eric at the Hayden Mountain Backcountry Lodge. He is an amazing Chef. Accommodations are top notch. I highly recommend.
If you’re like me and you love to get off the beaten path, there is no better location. The host and proprietor is very easy going and one heck of a cook. The cabin is amazing. How he built it and how he sustains it all year long is a wonder. This is a must visit.
For people that can get there is great. Eric makes a big dinner and like minded travelers are fun companions.

Beautiful area, but way off the beatin path. It is a very long hike if you do not have a high clearance off road 4x4. Eric was a great host and provided good food. Hike to top of Mount Hayden was AWESOME!
It is what I wanted. A place that is in the wild and comfortable. The listing said you need a high clearance 4 wheel drive to get there. Take this very seriosly. This place is beautiful and yhe host, Eric, was great and a great place to meet others with similiar outdoor interest. This place is not for everybody but for those of us it is, it is very ideal!
Eric's place was the best thing we could have asked for a weekend away! I went with a friend and we had some troubles actually finding the lodge, however once you're there, you won't want to leave. Make sure to screenshot directions before making your way up the mountain. No service (unless you have Verizon then you'll have a little). Eric made the best meals and I will 100% recommend his place to others-- especially those who are big on backcountry skiing. Thanks again, Eric!
The Hayden backcountry lodge is great place to unplug and ground-down into the simplicities of life. Basic needs are met and luxuries are a paid privilege. Water is limited, therefore showers are at an additional cost and sleeping bags are required. Eric is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to hiking and exploring right off the property. You can summit mount Hayden by hiking right off the property and Bree, the lodge pup will be waiting for your return. The wood fired hot-tub is the best way to settle your nerves after making the partial drive up Imogene pass to the property, as this trek is not for the faint of heart. 4x4 is a MUST!
This was a super fun experience and a very cool lodge. It was not the experience I was expecting because I did not read thoroughly, but I am super happy how it turned out. It is deep into a jeep trail and you will not be able to make it there without a 4 low vehicle. You can also hike, but its a good hike to get in and out. Eric was super nice and knowledgable about backcountry living and we learned a lot from him. Part of the unique experience is he provides breakfast and dinner for you and really makes it worth it. Its located between Telluride and Ouray, so you can choose to go to either town pretty easily if you made it up there. Its certainly not an experience for everyone, but we really had a great time through the unexpected. He communicates really well and has a good system of making sure you are safe and not stuck on the mountain. I would definitely advise to download offline maps and he has a CalTopo map for you as well before you get there.
Getting there was half the fun. Arrived late, climbing the mountain in a thunderstorm. Beautiful cabin and nice people. Eric had dinner ready and it was great. Next time I might just bring oxygen. How they built such a nice place at over 11,000 feet with no real road is amazing!
My wife and I couldn’t believe where we were staying. We stayed during Jeep season and being a veteran 4-wheeler, it was quite an experience getting to this back country lodge. After a few trips up and down the mountain, you get used to it. Eric was very hospitable, a wonderful chef, and was so patient and informative with our 1001 questions about his life in the back country. Advice on hikes & 4-wheeling was freely given. We had the whole place to ourselves, so I’m sure it’s a different experience if you are with other guests that you do not know in his bunk -style accommodations. If you are into that, that can be a great experience in itself.
FYI-He has a dog and a cat(who were delightful!) if you have allergies.
We had lots of fun in the evenings playing cribbage together with Eric and we learned how to play properly😂. Beware of too much wine and gummies, its a great place for both.!😉
Our stay was amazing. The cabin itself is completely off the grid, and can only be accessed with a legit 4x4 vehicle. Eric, the owner, provided an amazing breakfast and dinner for all guests every day and the food did not disappoint. The location is spectacular with several peaks to hike and is right next to one of Colorado's most famous 4x4 trails--Imogene Pass. The perfect place to get away and explore the best of Colorado.
