About this property
Beautiful Lake Front property on Fine Lake. Summer/ Winter enjoyment
This family home has a large, comfortable living area that is ideal for gathering and enjoying the entire family. Boasting a beautiful lakefront view from the porch and a large lawn leading to the lake that allows for fun and games. This home has been updated with standard living comforts, as we use it ourselves seasonally, but there is no cable TV since we consider it a retreat from the world. We DO leave an HDMI cord or you can bring a fire stick or stream from your computer to watch movies. Our house is a little quirky and we keep condiments in the fridge and a few staples in the cupboards for when we visit. Feel free to use what you need. Please, no parties without prior permission as we like to be courteous to our neighbors. We expect you to respect our family space.
In the warmer months, enjoy a peaceful dinner and sunset down by the water at the outdoor dining table, and games around the dining table in the evening. The shallow waterfront is ideal for swimming and cooling off in the summer heat. We offer two Kayaks for guest enjoyment. Fine Lake is great for fishing, with plenty of bluegill, bass, perch, and walleye. We are an all-sports lake with a public boat launch located next to the Fine Lake Party Store. You can fish from a boat or you can fish right off the dock! Minimal effort is needed to catch fish in this lake.
In the cooler months, you will see ice fishermen on the frozen lake. Snowmobile trails and cross-country skiing are available at the Fort Custer recreation area 20 minutes south. There is always something to do, no matter the time of year!
Walk to Fine Lake Party Store the Banfield General Store is within 5min of the home so you can replenish essentials (the general store has great cookies!). The town of Battle Creek is only 20 minutes away and Kalamazoo is roughly 30 min. Battle Creek has several nice restaurants and breweries, as well as attractions like Binder Park Zoo, the Leila Arboretum, and several museums. The Gilmore Car Museum is 10min west of the property, and the Mooville Creamery is ~25 minutes down the road, where you can enjoy ice cream and outdoor fun with the family. Additionally, each year the city of Battle Creek hosts an air show and hot air balloon festival that draws hundreds of visitors to enjoy the mesmerizing event.

Had a group of guys for a long weekend to play the Gull Lake courses. This was the perfect location. House was nice and appropriate for our group of 4. Neighbors were very nice, and the extra large kitchen table made for some wonderful card games and bourbon drinking. Very relaxed and comfortable place to stay. Oh, and owner was spectacular in communication!!!
We had a lovely weekend on Fine Lake. Bed was super comfortable. The lake was so beautiful! Loved the property. Had one question and owners responded so quickly. Definitely recommend.
It was perfect for what we needed. the kayaks are pretty worn, we needed to clean spider webs near the dock every morning, but we didn’t mind.

Unfortunately the owners were unresponsive when trying to communicate with them. Recent severe weather had forced the closure of most places in the area for the weekend, so without power to much of the area we reluctantly decided to leave on the first night of the stay.
After a tornado ripped thru our neighborhood we needed a get away. This was the perfect spot. Nice lake warm and shallow. Plenty of fish. House was clean and nicely appointed. Owners were responsive a d very easy to get along with. We loved our stay and can't wait to return.
Beautiful lake front property with porch for relaxing, bring your yoga mat to take in nature & water toys for all. Home was clean and ready for our stay. All emenities you will need are provided. Manager was very reachable, accommodating & helpful. Thank you guys and we will be back!!

Wonderful. Glad you enjoyed your stay! would love to have you back.
Lovely, clean home on Fine Lake. Comfortable beds, lots of room and everything to make a home-away-from-home. Good communication with property manager. More detailed instructions would have helped for check-in process. Did not have time to use any of the 'lake toys' available (sad). Thanks for a wonderful getaway...

Thank you. We have updated the check-in instructions!
This is a beautiful property. It is well appointed and in a great location. We loved seeing the family photos and history. There were good books available to read. There is no cable or tv service. That was fine because we all unplugged and enjoyed our visit. The only drawback is that it had a very strong cat litter box smell that did not go away even after opening the doors to air it out. A good enzyme cleaner would clear that up.
First let me say that the owners of this property are awesome! We had great communication up to and during our stay. The home was lovely and provided anything you could possibly need, including lake "toys". The lake itself was so calm, clean and warm and the scenery was beautiful. I had thought that not having cable TV would be an issue but I was wrong. It was a perfect place to disconnect and enjoy beautiful days and bonfire nights. This is definitely a place that we will put on our list to visit again. Thank you so much Brett and Lisa!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the stay and appreciate your communication as well.
The carpets were filthy, it stunk like mildew. None of the TV’s worked. The water was hard and smelled like sulfur, so you stunk like rotten eggs when you got out. If I could of cancelled the 2nd night I would have.

Hello Craig, sorry to hear of all of this after you departed. We would have been happy to address things while you were there and even cancel your booking. We try to be very clear in our write up that we do not have cable TV or even wifi but understand that people to not always read the descriptions. As of this past summer, we have a wifi box that we leave for guests use in the kitchen but does not connect to the TV.
The water is a hard water system, and we use a softener. The salt was refilled on August 28th, so I am surprised by the "sulfur" smell, but we will look into it.
It has been a busy season, so I will look to have the carpets cleaned. However, the ones in the living room are new, so I am guessing the bedrooms are what are needed.
We arrived at this rental in the late afternoon, Once we got into the cottage, we were met with sheets and towels laying on the floor, unmade beds, dirty bathrooms (including a swimsuit hanging on the shower. The dinning room table was dirty, The floor was dirty. There was food in the fridge. There was a live cricket on the sofa. It smelled musty. Outside, the area between the lake and the house looks like it hadn't been cut or trimmed; There was structural damage to the side of the house. I sent an immediate email to Mark on the VRBO sites and never heard from him. Seeing as we drove our classic cars, a neighbor was out looking at them and he gave us the phone number of a person that I assume was the owner. She was appalled and said she would see what was going on. She did call back to say the cleaning staff was not answering their phone. I still hadn't heard from Mark yet. I told Lisa that we had seen enough and wanted a total refund. She did call back to say the cleaner was on her way over to do their job, but we had already booked rooms in Battle Creek. Should there be any disputes to the conditions, I will be happy to share pictures. If there was a zero rating, I would have given it.

Danielle, Our cleaner made a mistake on the dates and we did our best to correct the situation and gave you a full refund. That has never happened before and we were shocked ourselves. Unfortunate for the bad review as you did not have a chance to stay and we really were very kind and accommodating to the best of our ability. sometimes things go wrong. our appolgies.

Needs some tlc
I’m struggling with this review because while we had a nice stay, we had so many issues from the very start that I ultimately feel we did not get our money’s worth out of the property.
The inside was very clean, but didn’t have any trash bags or extra toilet paper until I reached out to the owner to find them tucked away inside a closet that was labeled for owner’s only. The upstairs sink had an issue with the plug that my husband had to fix on our first night there. We also had a mice eat some treats off the kitchen counter one night.
The outside is what we really had issues with. There is a bunch of broken glass along the side of the house, the yard was covered in branches that fell from the trees, the dock was covered in goose poop that hadn’t been cleaned off in a while, the second kayak was so dirty and the seat so ratty no one wanted to use it, and the concrete steps were so covered in ivy vines that my mother almost tripped badly on them. The biggest disappointment was the grill made an audible tearing sound when I lifted the lid because the cobwebs were so thick and it clearly hadn’t been cleaned after the last use. Our family was unable to grill the tomahawks we had bought specifically for the trip.
The owner responded quickly and nicely, but there was no action taken besides saying he would have to talk to his yard guys and house cleaners. I hope he gets it sorted because without all of these issues, it would be a lovely property.

Thanks Kate. It was helpful to learn of the concerns during your so we can address them in the future.
I have to say I'm disappointed with your review and rating; given that you emailed at least once a day, I feel we were very responsive.
I offered to send the plumber that first day but you said your husband would work on the sink, and ultimately it was just that the stopper was slightly engaged.
We typically leave an extra roll of TP in each bathroom (it's hard to know if people are heavy users - which in these older lake houses, we have to be aware of for the sake of the plumbing), and that is usually enough, but of course, we leave reserves in the owner's closet which we gave you access to so you did not have run to the store during your stay. The same goes with towels, we typically leave one per guest, and the extra trash bags (most people don't go through more than 1 bag during their stay, so it's hard to know, but again we pointed you to the reserves in the owners closet on the second day)
We were not aware of the fallen branches and will have those cleaned - high winds come in, and sometimes they drop.
Cobwebs and Geese are a constant issue for us on the lake. We put the skis out to try and help distract them, and that's why I indicate in the instructions that there is a broom for washing the dock. The alternative is we take the dock out at the end of summer, so there would not be one for use. I will have our maintenance person be sure to clean the dock on the day of arrival, but the geese come nighly so cleaning the dock is part of lake life
The kayaks really are a bonus with the house, so while one is older and the seat is sun is damaged it simply is your choice to use or not. we use it all summer ourselves.
Additionally, I am always happy to discuss discounts for issues as we do want people coming away enjoying the home as much as we do every summer, but I typically like to wait until after departure to see what the condition of the home is upon check out. My cleaner reported that given the condition the home was left in that the house took longer to clean than it typically does and that a number of extra towels were pulled from the owner's closets, causing many extra loads of laundry, so the cleaning charge to me was greater than what is provided by the rental agreement which i was happy to cover given some of the inconveniences you experienced.
Thank you again for your conversation, as it will help us improve our summer family home that we have just started sharing with others. We may consider pulling it from VRBO altogether since it has simply been a family home for 50 years and might not be an ideal rental. Thanks
Brett just a note that there was a broken paddle board in the driveway when I arrived last week. I tried to message you via VRBO but did not have service at the home. The garbage men did not pick it up btu we did get them to back up to the house by givning them $20 to pick up the trash that was there when we arrived. Our trash is out there with the lid ion .
