About this property

Former Village Hotel - now a Gîte for groups of up to 30

Welcome to Le Logis Alexandra, formerly an 18 room hotel and now a charming group-stay venue for families, friends/colleagues - offering accommodation for up to 30 persons and specifically created for visits of short duration.

Located in the delightful riverine village of La Trimouille on the Benaize river; between the Berry and the Limousin regions in west central France.

Built on the site of a 15th century Clarissine convent, Le Logis Alexandra has been totally restored (exposing the original stone walls and beams) to provide three spacious suites and five bedrooms (a total of 12 bedrooms (17 beds) with 9½ bathrooms; a living room with a huge fireplace, an equally large dining room that can be used for parties, functions, seminars etc; a huge commercial kitchen, a courtyard (w/2 BBQ's) and a large terrace above.

Le Logis Alexandra provides cost-effective accommodation for weddings, reunions, birthdays, group walking or biking tours, fishing groups etc and is able to accommodate up to 30 persons on a self-catering basis - with a minimum stay of two nights.

It is also available as a Bed and Breakfast for one night rentals - for weddings, birthdays or other such festivities - in which case breakfast is complimentary.

The village of La Trimouille has a cinema, post office, pharmacy, grocery store, Bakery/Patisserie & Tea Rooms, 2 doctor’s surgeries, a stationers, 1 bar/cafe with billiard table & 1 Bar/Restaurant with both Billiards & Darts (both on the square); an electric car charging station, several free public car parks (the largest two 2 are situated on either side of Le Logis); as well as a play area for pétanque, tennis courts, and a children's playground at the riverside ( just a 3 minutes walk to the river).

The closest town is the charming, medieval Montmorillon, 14km away, while the closest city is historic Poitiers (65km), former site of the English throne during The Hundred Years War and now home to one of the country’s most popular theme parks - Futuroscope.

The region is extraordinary not only for its beautiful, peaceful and safe countryside which makes it ideal for long walks, bike rides, boating and fishing (the commune of La Trimouille alone has more than 100km of river banks) but also for its historical monuments and preserved frescos.

In fact, just 15 mins from La Trimouille is the UNESCO World Heritage site St Savin (famed for its 12th century frescoes) while just a short drive further on you will find the ancient medieval walled city of Chauvigny and Angles sur L'Anglin, rated one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Come and experience what the French call ‘la France profonde’ - rural France where life continues in much the same way as it has done for centuries.

There are rolling fields of sunflowers in the summer months, forests of rich ambers and reds in the autumn; with villages and farms a mass of colour during spring and breathtakingly beautiful in winter.

Just north of the village is the Brenne national park with its thousands of lakes - the largest natural reserve in France and a must for nature lovers. Plus, within a short drive there are two lakes for swimming and boating. River swimming and canoeing is enjoyed along both the Vienne and Gartempe rivers.

The village's Benaize River is ideal for kayaking, while nearby Lathus (20 minutes away) offers white river rafting , zip wire activities and horse riding for children.

About the host

Host profile image
I'm an unashamed francophile - and though I still can't speak French properly ( a real embarrassment) I'm going to persevere........I just love it here.
Am a Kiwi (New Zealander) who has lived in Asia a long time and thence Australia - ex antique dealer - ex lots of things.

This picture actually doesn't represent me as the car (a handmade 1963 Morgan) belongs to the former owner of this old hotel (Jerome) but it represents how good I felt sitting in it outside his family's Hotel de la Paix (now my own Le Logis Alexandra).

I've spent a fortune (and a long time) renovating the place (certainly never anticipated THAT!) but am quite satisfied now with the results - as a former hotel, its large enough to accommodate large groups and is particularly great for family or group reunions where all the facilities can be used and thus the costs reduced overall for the stay. Makes it all very affordable !

Hope to see you soon,
My best,
Alexandra

Why they chose this property

The best part of the property (from a guest's standpoint I would think) is that you are totally self-contained once you get here - you are in control (though obviously it is taken for granted you will respect my home as you would your own).
There's room for everyone (up to 30 with space for small children); plenty of public spaces and a huge communal kitchen. There's a courtyard outside with BBQ and above a huge open-air terrace so ideal for outdoor entertaining as well.

But the village itself is really quite pretty and has all of the amenities one would need.

What makes this property unique

As an old hotel in a small riverine village in the countryside of France - the benefits are - loads of room (12 private bedrooms in all and 9 ½ bathrooms), independence yet with the availability - and in walking distance of a grocery, a cinema, a pharmacy, a stationers, two doctors' surgeries, a post office.

Plus a restaurant with outdoor dining, a bar, billiards and darts and a bar/café with televised sports - both right on the square .

A river with ducks to feed and fat trout to fish, tennis courts and a big park with a children's play area - and another area with chairs and tables for picnicking and where the locals play pétanque.

And its tranquil - quiet, safe.

Parking is directly outside the old hotel or in either of the two squares - in front of the church or in front of the Mairie and of course directly outside Le Logis during holidays.

10 minutes from the train station and 4 super markets cum department stores and the historic "Cité de l"Ecrit" - a Medieval town host to a myriad of book shops and exhibits celebrating the history of writing.

We're 15 minutes from a fabulous UNESCO World Heritage Site - Saint Savin; 30 minutes from Chauvigny, the largest fortified medieval city in Europe; 35 minutes from " Angles sur L'Anglin", one of the most beautiful villages in France ; 1 hr from Poitiers and Futuroscope.

Its a marvellous area - from the standpoint of nature, and of course, history.

Come and see for yourselves,
My best,
Alexandra
