About this property

Off-Grid Farm Retreat in Silk Hope

Private, off-grid retreat at the back of a unique, 20-acre permaculture farm.
The guest spaces include two separate sleeping spaces with one shared bathroom that is within one of the sleeping spaces. There is visual but not sound privacy.

-One of the sleeping areas is a 16’x20’ autoclave concrete bedroom and bath house with radiant floor heating, queen bed, shower, bathtub, and dry toilet (custom-made wooden toilet w/ sawdust bucket system). An attached outdoor shower is available during warmer months.
-The other sleeping areas is a separate 12'x12' cedar cabin with lofted queen bed (vertical ladder to reach) and large covered deck. The two spaces are about 6 steps from one another outdoors.
-An enclosed kitchen is next to 12'x12' with a small fridge, gas stove top, and large toaster oven. The kitchen includes many, but not all kitchen supplies you might need. Please see the kitchen photos in case there is something unique you need for a specific meal. *If our family were traveling, I would likely bring my large cast-iron pan and some glassware for leftovers. There is a french press and a coffee grinder, but be sure to bring your own coffee!

The cabin and kitchen are heated by a propane space heater. For colder months, expect that it will be cold if you've been on an outing, but you'll be able to warm the space quickly upon your return. In hot months, there are fans for cooling, but if you're accustomed to chilly A/C this may not be your ideal spot. Electricity is provided via PV solar array and battery bank.

Your stay includes access to farm exploration and pond. We're happy to orient you and a map is provided in the Welcome Booklet. If you open a gate, please close it behind you and assume that any poly-fencing (plastic-wrapped wire) is electrified. You are welcome to bring a fishing pole.

This a perfect environment for a quiet escape, writer's retreat, meditation weekend, technology unplug, or opportunity to see regenerative farming in Piedmont NC. Cell phone service seems to work well for our guests thus far.

We greet guests personally so we can meet them and walk them through the spaces, so if you choose to visit, please plan your travel timing to arrive between 3-9pm and let us know your approximate arrival time in advance so we can plan our day accordingly.

Blissful Retreat

Was exactly what we were looking for - secluded, unplugged getaway. A cozy space with great hosts. The work on their farm is an admirable bonus. Would stay here again anytime.

Can't wait to go back again

We love this place and the hosts. The lodging and setting are unique and wonderful. This is our second stay and we will definitely be back. f you're looking for an off the grid (literally and figuratively) place to relax and you appreciate efficient and sustainable design in a rural setting, you will love this place. Bronwyn and Bobby are excellent hosts who've created a unique and welcoming retreat. Cathy and John

Fabulous Retreat

Bobby and Bronwyn are amazing hosts! Their tiny houses were a spectacular getaways from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We chose this location to get information on permaculture, orchards, and tiny house living. We have been contemplating making a move in the direction of more holistic living and wanted to test the waters before taking more steps forward. The property is gorgeous with loads of fruit trees and veggies. They are both very knowledgeable on all the topics we had questions on. Their off grid cabins are a true escape with the outdoor shower and the deck with fairy lighting.

Respite and refuge

We were visiting family and needed a nearby isolated lodging. This place was more than we could have envisioned from the architecture to the environment. It provided a peaceful inspired place to relax and a beautiful spot to safely gather with family. The attention that the owners have given to details in construction and materials (down to the bedding) are exceptional. We especially enjoyed the outdoor shower, fire pit, access to fresh produce in the greenhouse, and the beautiful view when waking up in the morning. We could write pages about how happy we are with this place. It’s truly a special experience and we’ll be back. Top marks.

Wonderful spot!

My 14 yr old son, 20 yr old niece and I came to the area to attend a 4 day workshop nearby. My son was a little unsure of staying off-grid but his concerns were immediately put at bay upon seeing the retreat. It has many of the comforts we are used to... but none of the distractions :) And the setting is just perfect! Peaceful and beautiful. The light show at night provided by the multitude of fireflies was so fun - something we don't see much of anymore. Beds and pillows were very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. Bobby and Bronwyn were so kind and informative! My only complaint was that we didn't get to spend more time there since we were attending a workshop! Definitely plan to come back... and can't wait!

Inspirational!

I had just finished reading an excellent new book on climate change & our environmental challenges, (We’re All Climate Hypocrites Now by Sami Grover.), so I had been thinking about how we humans could be better stewards of this planet. My friend and I loved staying in this cabin off the grid! The setting was beautiful. The cabin was comfortable. The composting toilet was interesting & easy to use. We spent a lot of time on the porch enjoying the beauty & the birds. Who needs a tv when there’s a full moon & hundreds of lightening bugs. The Tuckers’ care of the land & all the trees, vegetables, & herbs they’re growing were so inspiring! We purchased some of their asparagus. Best asparagus I ever ate!

Lovely place on a working farm

There are two small buildings that are very private and comfortable. The only sound was birds chirping in the morning. The main bedroom is beautifully finished with fine woodwork and a nice bed . The toilet is a composting toilet, and the rest of the bathroom is a completely modern with a good shower, nicely done. The other small building has a sitting room and loft bed, without a bathroom, and in another entrance a kitchen. The electricity is all solar and there is propane, so you have a gas stovetop and a toaster oven, no microwave or full oven. I loved it here. It would not be for everyone, there is a long dirt driveway and parking on grass, and the composting toilet, but if you like the outdoors this is seclusion with touches of luxury.

Exactly what I was looking for

Even though I got in super late Bobby showed me to the buildings at the back of the property and gave me a tour. It was very nice and cozy. It had all the feel of a cabin in the woods with amenities like electric fans. Sure I saw a couple spiders and creepy crawlers but it’s a cabin in the woods, you have to expect some natives. It was quiet and peaceful. Bobby and Branwyn are great people and I had a wonderful time talking with them while we picked blackberries. Also watch out for poison ivy. Again a natural consequence of being in the woods. Unless you’re willing to hike into the woods for firewood you may want to bring some with you just in case. I was able to get one or two bars of Verizon cell service out there. Enough to get texts, check email, maybe set your smart home, but I wouldn’t count on any streaming, not even music. What other praise can I give than “I’d love to come stay again!”?

rustic and elegant

Two small buildings beautifully re-done on an organic farm. You wake up to the sound of birds. It is on a long narrow track far from the road, so you have complete privacy. The set-up is unique and probably not for everyone- the electricity is solar, no Wi-Fi or AC etc., but I found it completely comfortable.

Enjoyed living off the grid

We were questioning our decision to stay here before arriving; but then we arrived and were amazed. We loved every living space; the weather was ideal to sit on the porch and the living room was comfortable for eating and reading. The "shower house" had a super comfortable bed and up to date bathroom. The toilet was different but did it's job well. We are glad we choose to stay at this off the grid, unique, clean house; and would stay again if ever in the area.

A Friend's House

Stayed here for an entire week while attending a Pilates training down the road. It was a wonderful choice. On my arrival I was greeted by my host, Bronwyn and her welcoming committee of four lambs! The accommodations were very clean, super cozy and incredibly quiet. They are set about a quarter mile down a road at the very back of the property, so you see no other buildings or people and hear only birds. Since there isn't much around in terms of restaurants, I bought supplies in the nearest town and made breakfast and dinner each day on site in the little kitchen which had everything I needed. I thoroughly enjoyed coming back each evening anticipating which combo of little animals I might see in the driveway and stop to pet. Bronwyn even set me up to bottle feed the littlest lamb one evening where I also met the rest of the super sweet family. I was a little worried when I saw that the overnight temps were going to be below freezing, but the heat in the bedroom kept me very warm. At the end of my stay I felt as though I was leaving a friend's house...not a hotel. From the bubble bath in the giant tub, to the sunsets on the deck to the utter beauty and peacefulness of the property I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and highly recommend you spend some time in this tranquil farm outpost.

A full experience

The entire property was created from love. From the moment you turn into your destination you are immersed with a diversity of plants and trees. The off-grid farm retreat is exactly as its listed...its off-grid. Nothing but natures many sounds- incredible stars at night- though minimal you are the property is well equipped to compliment your stay. Wonderful.!

The overall impression was peaceful, informal, and refreshing. A great experience and education in alternative living. Bronwyn and Bobby were absolutely the best hosts and were so accommodating for our needs. Loved visiting with our daughter who lives close by, loved drinking coffee on the porch while watching the sun rise over the dew covered landscape, loved the farm tour, and loved the conversations!
