About the host

Hosted by Carolyn Calfee

Host profile image
The serenity, the peace, the spirituality of the land and place – it was everything we were looking for as we started the second half of our lives. With a goal of providing exceptional experiences for our guests, we blended our previous careers in finance with our love of New Mexico – and our love of cooking, design, hospitality, history, and culture - The Grand Hacienda was born. Breakfast every morning is really an act of love, a culinary and social experience. We could not have found a better location to fulfill our love of hiking and the outdoors. Sacred lands once home to indigenous peoples, sharing land that they walked before us. The practically-unused Abiquiu Lake is almost like our private lake and oasis.

The sense of detail is very evident throughout the property. The placement of outlets, windows, light switches. The catching of the light, the catching of the sunrises, exploring the early morning sunshine in cool temperatures on the resalanos. The grounded floors and lack of EMFs. The floors, heated by the heat generated in our greenhouse.

We grow our own herbs and vegetables, we buy produce and eggs from local organic farmers.

We thought that guest interactions with the host owners would be a crucial part of each guests’ experience. Our guests interact with us every morning during and after breakfast, where we talk about the day’s adventures and what to see and do. And, we often meet up again after they return – exhilarated, red clay on their shoes, tired muscles ready for the hot tub. Playing a small role in providing this experience for our guests is pure joy for us. We are happy to give in thanks for all this land gives to us. We hope you will reach out to us and come and visit our paradise. You are truly welcome here.

Why they chose this property

We built The Grand Hacienda because we love the history and culture of the area, love the land, and want to share this special place with others.

What makes this property unique

The Hacienda has a very green footprint: Water, solar energy, limited EMFs in your suite, "earthing" floor and so much more. We grow most of our herbs and vegetables in our greenhouse. We buy as much of food as possible from local farmers and farmers’ markets. Enjoy spectacular views; modern technology; private outdoor patios; private entrances; spa showers; king-sized beds; and wonderful breakfasts, coffees and afternoon treats. Enjoy your exclusive benefits: lakefront rocky beach area and hiking trails; access to the Mercado gift shop and catered meals; spa massages in your suite; bocce ball and jenga; and so much more. Join our free Facebook group community exclusively for our guests.
