About the host

Host profile image
We are Doug and Terri Matern. We live permanently in Florida. We have been coming to NC as tent campers for 35 years until we bought our first property promising each other that we will never stop tent camping, but.... now we glamp instead.

Why they chose this property

This property is 22 +/- acres in the Nantahala National Forest with rushing creeks running through it all year round. The lodge is of saddle and notch construction built in the mid-1930s using the chestnut trees harvested from the property for the logs and the board and batten interior walls. Today there are no American chestnut trees on the property, not because they were over-harvested but because of a beetle that went to town in the area killing all the chestnut trees. There is one remain hybrid chestnut. Today the American chestnut tree is making a comeback after the hybrid has now been farmed out of the hybrid. We are hoping to have a small tree farm of American chestnuts on our property in time. When we bought the property in 2019, it was on its way to the auction. The interior of the house is a museum of American tools and ingenuity. The furnishings are of the Adirondack style with a little bit of eclectic tone. We are working with the North Carolina Preservation Services and the Federal Preservation Services to preserve and rehabilitate the house for public use as a vacation rental. We welcome approved events.

What makes this property unique

We welcome approved events and groups such as wedding groups (rehearsal dinners, wedding ceremonies, and receptions can be done on the property), corporate retreats, art retreats, exercise workshops and seminars, star gazing groups, bicyclists, clubs, and other approved groups. Please notify the owner for more information.
