great family reunion
After a family wedding off site we had a family reunion at the RR Ranch. A very quiet isolated location. This helped us catch up with family members - there were little distractions except for sightings of wildlife. Top notch amenities, well equipped kitchen, plus three large gathering areas. We used the fireplace for extra family ambience. We took several hikes around the property as well as in National Forest surrounding the property. If you want peace and quiet this is the place. I had good communication with the people involved with this facility. I would recomend this to my friends and their families.

Staying in the Mountain
I stayed at the Lodge with a total of 14 people. The Lodge was beautiful with a gorgeous view and did have everything you would ever need. The downfall was it took 30 minutes to get there, and the last section of the road was dirt and rocky. The Lodge ran on solar power that didn't hold the charge and we lost power 2x. Robert did start the generator so we would have electricity. He told us were using too much electricity and needed to shut the lights off more and not use the dryer. We were supposed to hang out our laundry on the clothesline. The basement has 2 bedrooms, and the temp down there ran 55-58 degrees and never got warmer. The 4 bedrooms upstairs all had a loft and their own bathrooms and deck that were amazing. The master bedroom and bathroom were also very nice. Hopefully they will be able to fix these issues because this is truly a beautiful place.

Exceeded all expectations
Just ended a great stay in the lodge and did not want to leave. This was a family trip for the guys and we all love the outdoors. The Double R Ranch had everything that we were looking for in a base camp. The lodge has the feel of a rustic mountain cabin with all the conveniences of home. The kitchen was well-equipped and the cooks in our group took full advantage of those amenities. A few highlights: star-gazing and a meteor shower, amazing views, afternoon thunderstorms for a good nap, elk herd in the meadow at first light, mule deer visiting in the evening, fishing at Mancos State Park, hiking trailheads at Transfer Campground, off-road adventures, creating family memories. We plan to return with wives and daughters. Thanks!!

Awesome Secluded Property
Gorgeous property way up in the mountains with amazing views. We went with a group of friends and it was perfect for our huge group. The property was very clean and seemed new. We stayed there to do some UTV riding and this had perfect access to the trails. No trailering was needed from here. There are lots of beautiful trails to ride on close by. The property owner and staff were great and helped us with our every need. We will definitely be staying here again if we come back to Mancos.

About the host

I lived in Colorado for ten years in the 1970s and was an avid outdoorsman - climbing 14ers, skiing and cycling. I went back East to get a graduate degree and work on Wall Street but always vowed that I would return to my adopted home. Every year, I would make 2 or 3 trips back and on every trip I would think I needed to find a way to get back home. It is hard to turn hopes into reality, and the road has not been as smooth as I would have wanted, but I finally found what I think is close to nirvana tucked in a little corner of the State. What could be better than to actually live in a National Forest at the top of a mountain? Doing that requires self-sufficiency and self-reliance. We are ten miles from the nearest neighbor and fifteen miles from the nearest little town, but we are very close to heaven here. We run on our own solar panels and our own wells. We built everything that you see over the past ten years. It has been a labor or love but a labor nonetheless. Come enjoy what we have built. It is totally unique.

Why they chose this property

I spent almost 20 years searching for a perfect place in Colorado, my adopted home, before I found this "in-holding" . The Double R Ranch is 160 acres surrounded by the 2 mm acre San Juan National Forest. I have spent the past ten years developing the property. You would never expect to find the elegance of our Main Lodge tucked in among some of Colorado's most spectacular and inspiring scenery. We are solar powered and eco--friendly. Most summers we have a resident elk herd on our pastures. At night and early in the morning we are serenaded by a local coyote pack. But the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms at unique and well-appointed by local craftsmen. And our common areas- the Great Room, the Library, and the two family rooms are remarkable.

What makes this property unique

You can see 100+ miles into Utah, the top of Mesa Verde National Park and on a very clear day the tip of Shiprock peaking out from New Mexico from the Double R Ranch. Sitting on the wrap around porch or on one of the upper balconies you feel like you are on top of the world..and you nearly are. Frequently in the early morning you will see elk grazing in the nearby pasture. At night you will see more stars filling the entire sky than you have ever seen in your life. Here you can feel at peace and feel like you have escaped from the rat race of civilization.

We don't have to worry about social distancing. We are about as distant as you can come and still be connected to the comforts of home. Bring you family. Have a family reunion or a family retreat.
