There's so much to do and great food to discover in the neighbourhood, but some of the best places we have found are:
To Be Frank Bakery – 5 minutes to the north, on Bedford Street
French bakery with the best baguettes, hands-down, anywhere. Forget Lune Croissanterie, To Be Frank is the real deal, and much closer by. Less hyped too plus no queues. Amazing sourdough loaves, croissants, and sweet & savoury patisserie available as well
Beermash - 5 minute walk on Smith Street
Great outdoor seating, selection of 20 rotating beers on tap, and all the local and international craft beers you can imagine
The Horn African Restaurant, probably more Ethiopian-style in reality. Excellent indjera share platters, veg or meat, with frequent live music, owned by friendly Peter and his Ethiopian wife. Very down-to-earth kinda place, amazing food.
Faraday's Cage – Grungy brunch joint just 5 min away, on Gore St, Fitzroy Excellent food and coffee in warehouse atmosphere. Gets busy on weekends!
Shop Ramen, best Japanese ramen you'll find in Melbourne – 5 minutes' walk on Smith Street, direction Johnston Street, on your left.
You'll need to wait 10-15 minutes to get assigned a table but I assure you it is worthwhile!
Plug Nickel coffee on Peel Street
A slightly further walk than over-hyped Proud Mary Coffee in front of my apartment block, go instead for a 5 minute walk and have low-key, excellent espresso. Nice outdoor seating on leafy street. Corner of Little Oxford & Peel.
Runner Up Rooftop Bar – 5 minute walk on Johnston Street, in Collingwood Yards Art Precinct
Great views, vibes, and drinks in Melbourne's home base of community radio
Albion Hotel - less than 5 minutes away
Freshly prepared modern takes on classic Australian pub meals. Veg options available
Bon Ap' Bistro on Brunswick, if you're looking for something fancier
Excellent classic French food with good wine selection to match. My favourite is the boeuf bourguignon, but the menu changes regularly!
Thin Slizzy, stoner music themed pizzeria
Street seating, very casual ambiance but great pizzas with imaginative toppings. Slightly further walk on cnr Johnston St & Dight St, Collingwood
Friends of the Earth
They have a healthy vegan lunch every day between noon and 2pm, and support green activists
