Ruru Retreat at the Sculpture Park

The Retreat is a perfect hideaway where you can take a moment to relax in this peaceful, natural environment or sit and enjoy the view of the Quarry pond from the front porch. Feel free to wander the 2km pathway throughout the park and enjoy the birdlife with over 30 different species making this home. This includes the New Zealand Ruru (native owl) which is the namesake of the property. The park has over 100 New Zealand sculptures all placed throughout the walk. Each year additional sculptures are on exhibition within the park. The Retreat provides you with a unique get away experience.

Perfect hideaway cottage, spacious and well equipped. Superb location for local attractions particularly Hamilton Gardens, and the Sculpture Park is itself an interesting and stimulating location with the added attraction of quiet evening walks. Highly Recommended.

We had an excellent experience from initial booking through to being greeted by the fabulous hosts. We were thrilled to discover a barista on site for our morning espresso hit and spoilt by delicious pies and ice cream on offer. But the star attraction was the park! It’s a stunning collection of natural beauty and art in unexpected places. A one-of-a-kind accommodation, tranquil and regenerative, and the highlight of our trip to New Zealand!

The park was developed from a derelict quarry and abandoned for ten years. To see how nature has taken back this space and created a thing of beauty from the destruction.
At the Conifer Canyon you will see the amazing wood portal that has been built from the 100 trees that came down during Cyclone Gabrielle - again nature at its best.

The property is perfect for your mind, body and soul with the green oasis calming and the water views soothing as you walk the two kilometers around the park.
Listen to the 30 different birds who make their home at the park, serenading you in the morning and as night falls.
