About this property

Historic Gem 1840's newly furnished brick house.

This genteel old lady was built in 1842 and she has good bones! The house is in the middle of all that historic Nauvoo has to offer, with the added benefit of being across the street from Dollar General and Casey's pizza. As with most old houses, there is one bathroom which is clean and spacious and on the ground floor. All of the furnishings are new. There is a large and inviting living room with plenty of space to spread out. There are three bedrooms - one very large - that are all tastefully furnished and have new mattresses. The biggest bedroom can hold more sleepers if needed. The smallest bedroom (the 'Toblerone' room) is ideal for our littlest guests with its quirky shape and fort-like possibilities. There is an outside deck where you can watch life go by but perhaps not in the winter. There is a laundry room on the main floor. There are two parking spaces at the back. On a more sentimental note, there are some original Nauvoo temple stones incorporated into the building as door lintels and windowsills. A gentle reminder that there is no smoking, vaping, alcohol or drugs permitted. Please do not bring your pets. Please note that this is an old house. The stairs are steep and may not suit people who have stability issues and the bedrooms and single bathroom are not on the same floor.

Such a great place to stay. The location was perfect and size was great. The only thing that was hard was that there was only one bathroom. We knew about that before, so it wasnt a surprise. It would just make the stay a little easier. Overall the stay was awesome and we would easily stay again.

Great location to visit Nauvoo, old house, but they have done some remodeling to compensate in a lot of the house. Excellent location within Nauvoo as well.

Clean, Charming and Convenient

Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends. Plenty of space for our group of 4 adults and 3 kids. Felt like home away from home. Easy access to Dollar General and Casey’s and walking distance to the temple.

Plenty of Beds and Smiles

We couldn't turn down the opportunity to stay in a truly historic home and even researched the original owner, Joseph Horne, Jr and learned about his life. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough beds, but there were plenty, with the Murphy bed downstairs and trundle bed upstairs. Our bed was so comfortable! The house was close to pizza, groceries, frozen yogurt and close enough to the Nauvoo temple that we walked down to it every evening at sunset.

A wonderful experience

We love visiting Nauvoo, and we loved staying in this house. It was a great house for what we needed. There is one part of the house that is a little unexpected. You have to go through one of the bedrooms to get to another bedroom. It wasn't an issue for us, just unexpected.

I loved staying in an older historic home for my visit to Nauvoo. The house had everything we needed. A nice touch was having full size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash provided. We arrived at midnight, and the entry area was very dark. We were provided with clear directions on how to get in, but I was still holding my breath as I tried the lock on the back door, hoping this really was the right house. I'm sure they would have turned the porch light on for me had I mentioned my arrival time. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Nice place close to historical sites

This was a fairly nice, clean place with comfortable beds and close to all that we wanted to see, so I’m giving it 5 stars. There were a few quirky things, like the faucets in the kitchen and the bathtub are plumbed wrong (hot is cold and cold is hot) and the carpet upstairs is just thrown over uneven floors. The dishwasher is not attached to anything, so it just tips over when you open it and start loading it. I would have liked to have something other than a cast iron skillet to cook with. Our eggs tasted like whatever was cooked in it last (taco meat, I think) and it was so heavy. Also, a full length mirror would be nice and more seating in the living area. There are only enough seats for five people and we had six people.

It is an older home as indicated in the listing, but it was very clean and well maintained. The host did great communicating and helped with our unique accommodations. The home is within walking distance to the temple, downtown, and the few restaurants that are in Nauvoo. The home also had a great history and story that was hanging on the wall which really made the stay extra special knowing what role it played in the history of Nauvoo.

Great house with a lot of history and convenient location

We loved staying at this house. It had enough room for our family. We enjoyed the history of the house but also the added modern conveniences. The location was great as well. It was easy to see the historical sites, take a break at the house, and then continue with the sight seeing.

Our family of 7 stayed very comfortably here for 6 nights, and would absolutely do it again! There's plenty of space to spread out but also ample space to gather together. The AC units in the bedrooms worked beautifully! My daughters loved the gabled children's room. I was worried that only one bathroom might be an issue with 7 of us, but the bathroom was spacious and it worked out great! The home itself was so charming, we loved the pioneer character. Everything was clean and well stocked, and it was a wonderful stay!! Communication with the hosts was easy, efficient, and they were so quickly responsive!

Wonderful location and cute charming house!

We enjoyed this lovely home with a lot of charm! The pioneer owner’s story on the wall was fun to read, too. The location was great and was easy to walk to shops and the one restaurant that was open this time of year. The beds were firm but comfortable and I slept great! The one bathroom was a little tough but we knew that ahead of time so it was ok! It was a nice touch to have body wash, shampoo, dish soap, paper towels, food seasonings, etc supplied. There were a few games and books that my kids enjoyed, too. The only tv was in the living room but we didn’t mind. We really enjoyed our stay- thank you!

Great Place to Stay

We stayed here with our 5 kids (under 12yrs) and my dad. We had a great time. I loved the location. We walked the town and to the temple. It was also very convenient having a store across the street. The cars on the Main Street can get a little noisy in the morning, but it wasn’t a big deal for us. Sharing one bathroom was a little tricky at times with 8 people but again it was worth it. We felt like we were part of little Nauvoo staying so close to everything. Tips from the hosts were also very helpful. .

Home is nicely kept. The only thing we didn't like was that the bedrooms are all upstairs. This is less than ideal for midnight bathroom visits up and down old squeaky stairs. They do have one downstairs bed option but the beds upstairs are much nicer. Also one bathroom is tough for 6 people but we knew what we were getting with an old house. There is a Caseys right across the street which is nice for a quick cup of coffee or breakfast sandwich. Nauvoo is a very quiet town. There is some neat history here if you are into old houses! The host was very responsive, overall nice place.

Family Friendly

It was a beautiful property, clean, although the front deck could have been weeded. The weeds were growing through the deck. Apart from that, it was a beautiful house. It was clean and had everything needed to stay comfortably. Including a pack n play.

We had a wonderful stay very clean. The only issue it was a little warm down stairs especially when cooking in the kitchen. Upstairs was great with the window A/C in each room keeping us cool. Slept like a baby. So close to Nauvoo. Great time

Thank you for providing such a great place to stay! The house was exceptionally clean. The beds and bedrooms were comfortable and more than plenty for our family. Everything that we needed was provided for a comfortable and easy stay! It was nice to be in Nauvoo with only a few minutes drive to historic downtown. The Casey’s and Dollar General across the street were convenient. It was fun to learn about the history of the home. The house added to the wonderful experience we had in Nauvoo.

An amazing home!

We LOVED our stay in this pioneer home! The location of the home is so convenient to everything in Nauvoo. We loved being able to visit the sites and return for lunch and dinner. The home is large with plenty of comfortable beds and plenty of room. The best part of this home is that it was SO CLEAN and we’ll take care of. Made us feel right at home! We will try to stay here again if we return to the area.

Great Place To Stay

This property was clean and well maintained. It is across the street from groceries and gas, and close to other properties such as the Nauvoo temple. The stairs are historic and vintage, so you need to be careful on them. Suggest re-attaching the top of the stair rail for safety. It was loose.

Historical Nauvoo Trip

I loved staying at this house. It was a historic house with really nice updates inside. The house was as described and it was very clean. I appreciated all the info the host supplied before we came. They gave eating info and where to buy groceries. The neighborhood felt safe and would stay here again.

What a fun stay!

We were only in town for a couple of nights and had a uniquely fun experience in Nauvoo. Beds were firm, but not uncomfortable. Kitchen was sparsely stocked with pans but doable for a meal for 6. We were warned about the lack of grocery stores in Nauvoo and planned accordingly. Overall we enjoyed the quirkiness of multiple additions to a charming old house.

I am originally Italian but confuse many because I grew up in England and then moved to the USA when I married the ever lovely and evergreen Larry. Five children and 3 dogs later, we are almost empty nesters, and are moving into a different phase of our lives. We have sold our little farm in Oregon, and have moved to Nauvoo full time. After visiting, I realized that these were my people. I bought a house, and then another - one to live in and one to rent out. We are local so can usually handle issues in real time.

Why they chose this property

Why this property? Well Nauvoo is the short answer. And then there is the river and the farming community and the fact that everyone is on first name terms. Mostly it is a peaceful and calm place that is full of great beauty. This home is in the process of emerging butterfly-like from its neglected cocoon. It really does have great bones so watch this space as it emerges!

What makes this property unique

It is what I consider walking distance to all the lovely historical bits with the added benefit of being across the road from the Dollar General or Casey's for when you have to satisfy an uncontrollable ice cream craving. For an old house it is very spacious- nothing pokey here - so you really can spread out and find a corner to yourself to read or catch up on email or knit or whatever your heart desires when you have a bit of down time.
