The space
Experience Gettysburg’s Historic sites and wine country living and discover the joy of staying in an historic farmhouse with modern amenities just 10 minutes 7.4 miles from downtown Gettysburg.

Enjoy the inviting, relaxing, and warm ambience of our historic farmhouse, which we refer to as the Happy Hen. (entire upstairs)

Located within minutes of Pennsylvania’s best wineries, we are centrally located for exploring wine country, hiking two state parks, touring historic Gettysburg, and mountains in the near distance for skiing.

The Happy Hen is a 4 bedrooms, 1 bath (cozy stall shower), with art, antiques and comfortable furniture, a well-equipped kitchen and all of the essentials for a home away from home. In addition to the upstairs of this house there is outside area to sit around the fire pit or just gaze at the stars.

The farmhouse is a 2 rental home. The entire upstairs is The Happy Hen and the entire downstairs is The Rested Rooster.

We do allow nightly rates however due to dates and booking capacity we reserve the right to block certain days. Weekends are a minimum of 2 nights.

We do except pets for a $75 flat pet fee. No pets other then a dog each additional is $25. With that comes our Top Dog Package. Obviously while you're enjoying your vacation rental your pup should not have to Ruff it! We provide to use while your at the rental a sanitized pet bed, dry shampoo, Paw wipes, pet waste bags, food and water bowls, pet placemat, microfiber pet towels, and our signature endless treat jar.

The rental and property are treated for fleas and ticks. We also in between each guest have a crew that comes in with black lights to check over all carpet and floors for any pet accidents The day of checkout. Any areas are immediately sanitized and deodorized. We do not allow pets on any furniture!

Little History
The Happy Hen is the entire upstairs of the Historic home that is over 100 years old. There was a complete renovation in the spring of 2016 modernized what could be while still keeping the original charm. The floors are the original and with that come creeks here and there, we think of it as a reminder of the age.
The bathroom is the original for the entire home but now only serves the Hen. While it is not grand in size it gets the job done and the little decor adds to its charm. Off of the one bathroom door there is an outside sitting area where they used to hang their clothing from however now one can sit and enjoy a beverage.
Historic homes back then had minimal ways to sound proof between floors and ceilings due largely to the design. You will find that noise DOES travel but most of our guests are respectful and understanding to the nature of the house. To aid with this we do offer earplugs for very light sleepers and a sound machine.
The Historic home sits one block back from a main intersection for orchard trucks and traffic going either to HWY 81 or HWY 15, which also makes it extremely convenient to get around. The Farmhouse itself sits close to the road as due most Historic homes and there will be road noise. There are a few entrances that are low and if you are tall will need to duck.

All guests will need to sign a rental agreement.

Guest will need to do some departure procedures on check out, i.e. strip beds, clean dishes, and take trash out

Other things to note
This Farmhouse is over 100 years old and sits on .75 of land. As with all historic homes it sits very close to the road as the roads (road noise) were built after the home. The farmhouse can be rented as one unit (The Freckled Farmhouse) or as two rentals. The Happy Hen has its own private entrance and is the entire upstairs. The Rested Rooster has its own private entrance and is the entire downstairs.

The Historic home has sound proofing as much as possible for a historic home. Guests should expect to hear noise like hotel rooms as it does travel. We ask guests to be respectful of the other unit.

Guest access
The Hen has access to the farmhouses yard, fire pit, and grill.

High Speed unlimited Data Wifi!!!

All guests must fill out and sign a rental agreement. Our homes are insured with vacation rental insurance which mandates this must be filled out and returned

Infants two years and younger that are in addition to the maximum guest count must be announced prior to booking.

We do charge $25 per infant over the guest count. With that comes extra amenities

The bathroom is the historic homes original and has a shower stall which is small. If your looking for a large shower or bathroom this is not the rental for you.

There is road noise! This home sits close to a busy intersection and if you’re looking for total silence while you sleep this is not the rental for you!

We’ve had some guests be completely fine with it and some guests that said it was not bad we’re guessing it’s based on the time of year. We do provide sound machines and earplugs for lighter sleepers.

Our company emails out the arrival guide, departure guide, and rental agreement via Docusign. If you request to book this rental you must provide us with an email address.

AAA+ property owners, friendly and helpful. The Happy Hen Loft was such an adorable, rustic apartment. I would not have been happier any where else. Centrally located to some very historic sites and the area is so beautifully surround by nature. Truly marvelous place to stay. Thank you for such an enjoyable trip! I will be back again!

Girls’ Getaway
Perfect meeting place for four girls to meet up and reconnect! Lots of space , comfortable beds and living room furniture. Only issue was ton of stink bugs trying to stay out of the cold inside with us! Nothing an exterminator couldn’t fix! Would stay again! Loved the friendly goats in the yard!

Wonderful decor and space inside the property. Would have been nice to have a pot and pan provided. Ideally a walking trail around the yard would be great for future. Goats outside were adorable and lots of amenities were provided such as tv, internet, other kitchen items and everything was good quality. Can definitely hear the neighbors well. A bit high of a cleaning fee for still needing to do a fair amount of cleanup before leaving. Otherwise wonderful place and would stay again if I had a group and a pet.

Family trip
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Happy Hen. Close to everything we wanted to do, but still very much out in the country, quiet, cozy, and had a great time at the fire pit under the stars.

About the host

My husband and I both grew up in the Gettysburg area, we own a local business in town which has been in the family for 50+ years, it keeps us pretty busy most of the time but we do like to travel when we can. This rental is near our own home and we've watched it for years as guests would come and go, it was always filled with people visiting the area. The minute we saw the for sale sign in the yard we called for a showing and the rest is history. The previous owner/host has been extremely helpful in the process and we can't thank her enough!
