About Susan Shepherd
Barry Payne is from Kenya and spent his childhood camping, going on adventures and living in nature. We both love the outdoors and think of our house and barn as an extension of that. I'm a public radio producer, and have lived in Massachusetts my entire adult life. We both kitesurf, paddleboard, kayak and surf.
Why Susan Shepherd chose West Chatham
You can walk to the beach, restaurants, the bike path, while having a vacation in total privacy surrounded by nature without seeing anyone else if that's what you want. The bike path means you never have to get in your car if you don't want to. We love riding to nearby White pond for an afternoon swim. It's pretty secluded and often there's no one else swimming there. It's the perfect way to end the day before a wonderful cookout on the deck, and a campfire on a cool evening, or a family ping pong tournament in the barn.
What makes this House unique
The house is on an acre and a half, which is very rare for the Cape and Chatham, so it is completely private, nestled among beautiful old trees. The porch is on the second story on the back of the house so you are sitting in the tree tops. The house is on a dirt cul-de-sac with only a few other houses, which you can't see from this property. We love having a separate space in the barn, and when we have guests my husband and I always choose the barn bedroom, which is cozy and quiet and a great getaway from whatever is happening in the house. As soon as we drove onto the property we knew this was the house for us.

Perfect - as advertised
10 of us plus our small dog rented this cottage for 5 days and it was a perfect spot for a long weekend get away. There was plenty of room for all us. It was very comfortable, and clean. As advertised it is Country Chic.
Location is central to beaches of Chatham and Harwich. Downtown Chatham is only 5 minutes away and you are very close to the Bike Path.
Sue was very quick to answer every question I had before renting and during our stay.
Overall this was a great experience and I would definitely rent this property again.
The perfect home for a large family!
The property was perfect and just as described. We could walk to the beach and take a bike ride into Chatham. My four adult children, fiancés and girl friends really enjoyed the barn and the ping pong table. The table in the barn was perfect for a puzzle and the hot tub was enjoyed by all. Any questions I had were immediately answered. We would definitely return to this house.
The best vacation home on the Cape!
My family spent 7 days in this beautiful home. It exceeded our expectations on every level. Two words: Absolutely Amazing! From the moment we pulled in, we were in disbelief at how beautiful this location was. We were drawn to the location because of the privacy and convenient access to multiple beaches, stores, restaurants, and access to route 6 and route 28. This home was loaded with everything from WIFI to refrigerators in both the Barn and the Main House. My wife and I spent our entire stay in the barn. There are 2 outdoor showers conveniently located and a very nice fire pit with seating along with logs in stock near the barn. The Jacuzzi was a wonderful touch, with the beautiful multi color lights. We were living a dream to be sitting in the Jacuzzi on a cool night as we awaited our food to cook on the gas grill. We enjoyed both gas grills (at the Barn and the Main House). The large deck attached to the main house is amazing! You have to see this house to believe it. Another feature that was convenient was the washer and dryer. The Ping Pong table located in the barn kept us busy as well. We are extremely happy to have stay at this location and are equally proud to write this review. Sue and Berry left us a contact person (Anne) in case we had any issues. Anne instantly became our new friend, she literally wrote us an additional list of things to do and drew a map of nearby locations. We fell in love with the Chatham Squire, thanks to Anne. This was our best vacation on the Cape and we have been coming to Cape Cod for years. We only hope that it is available the same time next year! Thank you Sue and Berry you all are exceptional people.
Potential good space but details neglected
I have thought a long time about writing this review because the owner and her property rep were so very nice and responsive. There is nothing untrue about the way the house was advertised. It IS very private, one could walk to the beach, and it is near the bike trail. We know that the house was cleaned before we arrived. The main house had good space and the plumbing and electricity worked.
While the house was surface cleaned, nothing was really clean. The drawers were dirty; the silverware drawer/container was unclean. The vegetation around the house was so overgrown and infringing on the deck and house, making it uninviting and buggy. The grill was borderline unusable, even after my husband spent an hour cleaning it. The barn loft was not useable because there were insects rampant due to screens that were insecure. The bedrooms on the first floor were, well, one step away from staying in a tent; comforter on queen bed was impossible to use and the bureaus were in such condition that I only used the wire racks in the makeshift closet. Finally, the house was advertised as "in a safe neighborhood," which it surely was. But there was actually NO LOCK on the door. Really. The hole for the dead bolt was missing, and the button lock didn't work. I know the Cape is a hot location, but I would not pay what I paid again for a place found to be so unattended to and lacking in basic detail.
Perfect multi-family or multi-generational getaway
This is a very sweet property with multiple, flexible spaces. We were two families with various members coming and leaving through the week and everyone found a space that suited. Close to the beach and the bike path; peaceful but just minutes from town. Owners are communicative and friendly. Can't recommend this place highly enough!
Great, secluded property!
We had a 5-night stay over the Columbus Day weekend, and absolutely loved the place! We are only two adults plus a large dog, so the size was more than we needed, but the private yard was just wonderful for us. While there are four bedrooms, one is in the barn and one is a loft, so the main living area was a comfortable size for the three of us. We enjoyed the large sunny deck on the main house, the firepit in the yard, and the ping-pong table in the barn. Didn't try the hot tub (behind the barn), but it looks to be well maintained.
We have visited the cape at least once a year since 1999, staying in a variety of inns and rental homes, and this one stands out as our favorite so far... hope to come back next year!
Chatham has received the 'Distinctive Destinations Award Recipient' from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Its waters and history are diverse and unique. The Cockle Cove community of South Chatham is the best kept secret; rural and surrounded by vital marshlands including a salt water pond and channel to Nantucket Sound large enough for a 21' outboard center console sport fishing boat. An awe inspiring 15 minute kayak ride brings you to the mouth of Eel Creek also known as 'The Jetty', a remote stretch of barrier beach there brings you even closer to nature and further from the crowds. Swimming is warmed by the Gulf Stream. It hosts a large variety of birds, fish and other animals striped bass, bluefish, snowy Egrets, Blue Heron, King Fisher, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Red-tail Hawk and many migratory seabirds. From Chatham you can paddle board, windsurf, kayak, boat out to Monomoy, ride 40 miles on the bike path, skydive, fly over the cape on a scenic plane ride, drive to Provincetown for a Whale Watch, take a day trip to Nantucket on the nearby ferry, go clamming in one of the many estuaries, swim in a pond, drive to the National Seashore to learn how to surf. A week in Chatham is never enough.
