About this property

The whole enchalada!

Note: Despite any verbiage added by the listing website or ads you may see, you do not get the whole 15,000 square-foot house.! I’ve got to live somewhere!

You do get all four B & B units in out historic 1835 Hartford House in Geneseo New York with a private entrance and quarters that are totally separate from anybody else!

This includes five bedrooms with 6 beds, two kitchenette areas and 4 bathrooms. Sleeps 11 or more depending on if you want to use two large couches and our two available rollaway beds.

Relax by our large in-ground pool which you will enjoy exclusively, or hike our 70 acres of fields and woods teeming with wild life. If you take the “whole enchilada“ you also get exclusive use of our veranda overlooking the Genesee Valley.

Our kitchenette areas currently do not have a stove, but they do have kitchen appliances including refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There is also a gas grill and fire pit by the pool area.

Also on the property is the Genesee Volley Tennis and Croquet club so bring your racket and your tennis shoes to enjoy our Har Tru court. Croquet equipment is supplied and we would be happy to show you the rules of our unique version of "golf" croquet. Contact us after you make your reservation if you want to play in either our tennis or croquet leagues on weekdays.

We are in the Village of Geneseo, within walking distance to downtown and SUNY Geneseo, and a short drive to Conesus Lake or Letchworth State Park. Pets welcome in Unit #1, The Garden Suite only.

If the “whole enchilada” is too much for you, the property is also listed on this site with just three units (VRBO # 2336515) or you can take just the pool-side Garden Suite (VRBO #?2335772) with separate private entrance.

A night at the museum
A unique experience. The view from the verandah was lovely, and the perfect place to sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the end of a busy day of hiking. It accomodated our extended family if 11. The pool was refreshing but not heated. The owner gave a behind the scene tour of the rooms not opened for guests. He was a font of historical knowledge.

Historic Property
Our family stayed at this property for a wedding. It was very well stocked with supplies and comfortable. We took advantage of the peaceful setting to sit on the veranda enjoying the view, as well as the use of the tennis court and tennis equipment. Would stay here again.

Great Geneseo Reunion
We could not have had a better time. We held our barbeque on the back porch for our entire group of 35 and it was perfect. If you ever have a Geneseo reunion this is a fabulous spot with an amazing amount of history.

Tranquility & Renewal
Our stay at The Hartford House was just what we needed; we found peace in the stunningly beautiful vistas. We spent a good deal of time just enjoying the view from veranda at the back of the house where we started and ended each day. There is a good-sized, well maintained pool, which gave us respite when the heat was unbearable. One of the real plusses was that our dog, who is a 160 pound mastiff, was in heaven wandering the grounds at will. We found the rooms in the house charmingly decorated and loved the array of books on a wide range of topics that included nature and history. Our favorite books were the ones that gave insight into the history of the house, its original owners, and the development of the region. We plan to return to the house in the future--it is in a perfect location to visit the lakes, the wineries, and other amazing places in this stunningly beautiful region.

Host profile image
I am the 6th generation to live in the house built by my great-great-great grandfather, Civil War General James S. Wadsworth in 1835. The Hartford House is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Tours of the house can be arranged. The house is home to the recently formed Gen. James S. Wadsworth Institute of History and Geneaology. I am a rabid tennis and croquet player which is why I founded the Genesee Volley Tennis and Croquet Club on the property. When not playing, you can find me working on the farm or at my Main Street print shop.

Why they chose this property

This property is ideal for small weddings, reunions and other family events such as rehearsal dinners or bridal showers. Our (mostly covered) veranda overlooking the Genesee Valley can easily handle a party of 30-50 guests or you can have have the same number barbecue around the in-ground pool. (Gas grill provided!) Thinking bigger? Our walled garden on the south end of the house is an ideal venue for smaller weddings and parties of up to 125 guests, while our larger formal garden can easily accommodate up to 250 guests or more! (Additional charges may apply depending on the size of your event! Note: Weddings and other events are only booked from May 15-Oct. 15.)

What makes this property unique

The property is located in the Village of Geneseo with an easy walk to Downtown. It is a 70 acre park-like property teeming with wildlife, and also has a 5-acre vegetable farm. Hiking opportunities are available, or if you prefer competitive sports, you can use our Har-Tru tennis court or large "golf" croquet court. With proper notice, we can even work you into some doubles matches at our Genesee Volley Tennis & Croquet Club on the property. Tennis and Croquet equipment is available, but you will need flat court shoes to play on the Har-Tru. Sorry, no running shoes allowed.
