About this property

Low-scent, lovely historic mill house

This property is perfect for people who appreciate the charms of a newly renovated 160 yr. old mill house. Sleep on high quality mattresses with cotton bedding. Enjoy the culture, food, and natural world of the 5-college area from this cozy home base.

Free early check-in or late check-out when available.

The house has two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs and is solely for the use of guests. Guests also have use of the back yard and a bike shed.

Sustainability practices abound, beginning with a renovation focused on maximizing energy efficiency and reuse of materials, to the environmentally friendly products, washable cloths in lieu of paper towel, garbage cans that get washed instead of lined with plastic bags, etc.

Unscented, eco-friendly cleaning products are used in the house and on the bedding for the safety and comfort of guests and the environment.

Please read rules about dogs: not on furniture, must be on flea/tick prevention, must not be left unattended if not crated, pick up after them.

Please note: It is an outdoor shoes-off house. Indoor shoes are fine.

Bay State Village is a friendly, safe, walkable neighborhood where people wave "hi" and children play in the street. It is a 1.5-2 mile walk to Smith College and downtown Northampton along house-lined streets, or 1 mile to downtown Florence. Guests can drive to downtown Northampton and park in the parking garage where the first hour is free.

There is a swimming hole in the Mill River 2 blocks away, with in-town walking trails nearby.

Valley Bike Share with pedal assist bikes has a new bike station at the end of the block, along with our one neighborhood restaurant (Pho Boston) and you can easily get to the bike path that will take you by farm fields and converted mill buildings. The house has a shed that guests can use for your own bikes.

Lovely house in quiet neighborhood close to Smith College
The house was clean and has many nice features, such as an electric kettle and tea bags. Bedrooms are nicely furnished with extra blankets, fans, and closet hangers. Bathroom is big with both a tub and shower. The quiet fan above the shower was surprisingly effective. I had never stayed in a short term rental like this before and was unfamiliar with check-in and check-out policies, but it was all very easy. Debra told us everything we needed to know and was very helpful. It was very comfortable and we will likely return for future Smith events.

Marching Band Parent Recommendation
Thanks to Debra for having such a lovely property! The two air-conditioned bedrooms upstairs were just what we needed to be comfortable on a hot weekend. On Saturday evening, our daughter joined us in her very own bedroom on the first floor which was a terrific break from the dorm. We were able to bake tailgate treats in the fully equipped kitchen and enjoy family meals together in the dining room. It was just the perfect spot for a weekend away! 20 minutes to Orchard Hill so it was a simple trip to and from campus.

I work in the field of public health and have owned a restored a number of historic properties over the years. I bake, engage in social justice work, visit all of the local ice cream spots whenever possible, and make daily decisions about how to protect the beautiful world that I get to live in. I love hosting guests and am a huge champion of the Pioneer Valley and its local farm and food culture. I am originally from Montreal and I moved to the area 24 years ago to be near farms, forests, and a caring community.

Why they chose this property

I have lived in this neighborhood on and off for 23 years. It is friendly, safe, quiet, close to the river, and people know and care about each other.

What makes this property unique

Most importantly, guests can feel comfortable knowing that they aren't going to be sleeping in scented linens or exposed to toxic cleaning products. This is homeowner business where I do everything from buying the coffee to dusting the pipes. I think carefully about things that will make my guests comfortable and have an easy stay. I am interested in acclimating guests to the many wonderful things the area has to offer, and I am very accessible. This property is a great choice for people who appreciate a historic space that has been redone from top to bottom in a respectful manner while maximizing environmental sustainability.
