I loved this house and there are wonderful aspects to it. The deck, location, and fireplace

Great communication and lovely owners. Responsive. Some issues of not so clean sheets and some broken things like oven and screen door but good responsiveness from the owners. The beds are old and hard but the house is lovely while a bit shabby and fantastic deck! New sheets, beds and deck chairs would make it perfect!!!!

The only thing fabulous about this house is the title. Dont rent unless you have low expectations

We rented this place for the month of July and when we showed up the house was very disappointing. The upstairs bedrooms are not really bedrooms its more like an illegally converted attic. The stairs going up are so thin and deep there is no way it could be to any code. The bedrooms have tiny windows that barely open even when opened completely and that combined with its not insulated the rooms are boiling hot. The kitchen was tiny with all outdated pots, pans and rusty utensils. The bedding was old and nasty as were the towels. We were also informed in our lease that we couldnt use the washer and dryer and had to employ the owners housekeepers to clean and do the laundry off premises even though the washer/dryer worked perfectly fine. The living room was ok but tiny.Deck was a good size but after my first weekend I got a call from the owner about noise which I couldnt believe since the music came from a tiny ipod dock not a HiFi loud sound system. Was told later by one neighbor that all other surrounding neighbors are old and have nothing better to do than complain. We came home one day to find a hispanic man who barley spoke english IN the house at request of the owner he said to inspect the place which infuriated me since he unlocked the door and entered with us out of the house and not knowing he was coming. We had some cash, cameras, ipods and other personal belongings in the house which we thought a locked house would keep safe while we were out and were shocked that she gave permission or even had the nerve to pull a inspection. We are not kids in fact we are in our late 30s and do not need inspecting. I called the owner and she said that she had the right to do so which legally she doesnt and I informed her that the next inspector would be treated as a intruder. The owner met us on the last day and I followed her around for inspection so she wouldnt try to pull anything and not return our security. She said everything was fine and I had the house cleaned at my expense as per the agreement. I recieved a envelope from her by mail with just a fraction of my security back. She stated the house needed extra cleaning,a bicycle which was never there was missing, under the deck needed cleaning etc all this after her inspection. I had to threaten her with legal action and still she only returned another small fraction. The owner is very old and I dont believe is all there.I would not reccomend this home and if you do rent you will be harrassed by her and staff

A different world

Living close to Fire Island but never on it, we were amazed at the different lifestyles so close to home. All travel by bicycles was great. We were not prepared for the predominantly cash only environment but each store had a cash machine and everyone was very friendly. Being so close to the beach was nice as was going to Dino's or Ocean Beach for ice cream. A unique experience for sure.

Great Beach House

This house is a wonderful place to enjoy simple beach living. It’s close to a section of ocean beach that’s far less crowded than some other areas and yet it’s also close to the ferry and better groceries in Ocean Beach. The house itself is exactly as represented and has a good layout for families with kids bedrooms upstairs and adults in a nice bright master suite. Ventilation was excellent throughout so that sleeping without AC was not a problem- and so much better to listen to the ocean! The kitchen was well equipped with everything one needs including a decent inventory of herbs and spices. The deck was great with plenty of space to lounge and eat meals with extra friends. The grill worked well and there was a spare tank of gas. Everyone loved the outdoor shower which never ran out of hot water. There were plenty of towels and extra sheets. The washer and dryer were very new and worked well. The house was nicely cleaned when we arrived and did not have that musty beach house smell I remember from other houses I’ve rented. The only problem we encountered was the noise and fumes from the house under construction next door which began each weekday at 8 am. However, the owner of this house was responsive and did what he could to address the situation.

Bed bugs, be careful.

Nice property but infested with bed bugs. Brought them home with us and it cost us thousands in remediation. When we asked the owner for help she just denied the problem. Be careful.

Excellent stay

We had a wonderful week in Ocean Bay Park. The house was perfect for our needs. Well stocked, clean, and perfectly located to the beach, Flynn's, the ferry dock for water taxis/ferry, ice cream and pizza shops, etc. The deck is huge and well appointed. There were games, books and sand toys for the kids to play with. WiFi was a great bonus. Plenty of windows to open and enjoy the ocean breezes. The owner was pleasant and easy to deal with. Hope to return again someday.

A great stay!

We had a wonderful week staying in this very peaceful and relaxed home - aptly called "shed your stress"! The house is very well set up with a well appointed kitchen, comfortable living room and bedrooms, a great deck - and bikes! Our kids had a wonderful time riding around the island, and my parents enjoyed relaxing in the house. The house is very well located, close to the ferry, the beach, shops at Ocean Bay Park and Seaview and restaurants at Ocean Beach. The owner was extremely helpful and provided all the information we needed. We really enjoyed walking to the Sunken Forest, biking to different beaches, and taking the water taxi to explore other communities. The only caveat I would add - and this relates to Fire Island not this great house - is to bring your own food supplies if you are staying for more than a couple of days, as prices are expensive. We would recommend this property and would happily stay here again.

Lovely week away from it all

We just spent a fabulously relaxing week with our 3 kids at this wonderful house and after 7 years spent house hopping between OBP, OB and Seaview we all declared this home the best of the lot. The house was convenient to the ferry, beach and just a 20 minute walk to Ocean Beach. The layout of the house was also perfect for our family of 5 and the variety of sized bikes worked well for all of us.

Everything you need for a relaxing week away.

We enjoyed a fantastic week on Fire Island in this charming house. Very sadly the house we have stayed in for the past 4 years, that we adored, was completely devastated by Sandy. This meant searching for an alternative option. It was always going to be difficult to find somewhere that matched our expectations but we were pleasantly surprised by this little gem. Just a short walk from Ocean Bay Park Ferry terminal it's location is easy to find and perfectly placed being cycling distance from Seaview and Ocean Beach. The best thing about the house is the huge deck which catches the sun all day long and is secluded. We enjoyed breakfast out there every morning and had a grill every evening. It also has a fantastic outdoor shower with very hot water all day long. The house itself was clean and had all the essentials that we needed. Our two children aged 8 and 9 yo loved the attic bedroom and we were very comfortable in the downstairs double. The sitting room was cosy and well lit. The kitchen had a bit of an ant infestation but we have come to expect some wildlife on the island! Otherwise it was very well equipped with a great dishwasher and washer/dryer. I loved the fact that there were lots of beach towels available, as well as plenty of bedding and blankets. All the bikes worked and we had two locks. We also had more than enough beach chairs, buckets and spades and other beach items. The owner was very helpful and easy to communicate with. All her instructions were clear and everything was just as she implied. I would really recommend this house to any family wishing to have a relaxing week on Fire Island.

Perfect place to escape!

Situated on a quiet street in Ocean Bay Park, this house is cozy, charming and very comfortable. We stayed here during the July 4th holiday and had a wonderful time. Easy access to the ferry, beach, stores and the town of Ocean Park. The best part of the house is the massive deck and outdoor grill. The deck was worth the cost of the house. This is the perfect place for a small family.

Great weekend!

A few friends and I rented this house for an extended weekend and were pleasantly surprised. We were expecting to squeeze into a tiny cottage but there were plenty of places to sleep, and the huge deck and close proximity to the beach allowed us to spend all of our time outside. The owner was extremely pleasant to deal with and the entire renting process was really simple. We booked rather last minute so I was surprised we were able to rent at all, let alone have such a stress free process. The only concern I had was the white furniture, it made me extremely nervous that we might spill something or get it dirty, as it is a beach house, but as I said we spent such a large majority of our time outside that this did not even become an issue.

Relaxing Week

For the third year, we rented this property, my husband, our son, and two friends with their children. Clearly we love it. True the two upstairs bedrooms are small but on Fire island, other things are more important...like the deck. This deck is large and the owner has provided ample comfortable chairs and chaise lounges. The grill is large enough and works well. There are two large tables and a large umbrella on the deck. The living room is big enough with a couch and two comfortable chairs. There is even a fireplace which we used two years ago when we got some rainy weather. There are bikes and beach chairs to use and even a few sand toys for the kids. There were all new towels and linens this year. The last year we were out, we had issues with mosquitos at night so we asked the owner if she might supply mosquito nets. She readily agreed and brand new mosquito nets were waiting for us. We love this kind of house. Really, it is a cottage, not a luxury villa. Fire Island to me is a cottage place. That is what we like about it. Things happen on an island: propane runs out, wagon wheels rust quickly etc...you have to roll with it. While we were there, the propane for the inside oven ran out. So we baked our muffins in the grill! It was an adventure. The owner sent someone first thing in the morning to change the tank. If you are not ok with situations like that perhaps you should be looking in the Hamptons. The neighbors are close and you do have to respect that. Even low music might be too much at ten at night...especially outside. I am glad that the close neighbors did not play music outside at night. We wanted a quiet neighborhood. Good for listening to the surf. We had a lovely THIRD stay in this island cottage and I'm sure there will be more. If you are looking for easy island living in a cottage 2 minutes from the beach, with a large deck and a huge weeping willow in the yard, this is a lovely choice.

Wonderful once again

This is my second time renting this property and we were lucky enough to get it right after some redecorating. The floors were redone, Bedding was all new and as usual, clean and great. We were 6 girls in our early 30's using this house as a girls week get away. The location is great, close to the beach and walking distance to the town bars and supermarket. The owner is very nice and easy to deal with and we will be back yet again next year. On a side note if you are there on a Wed-Thursday night we hit up the Lobster buffet at Flynn's and for 39.99 it was so worth it. (this coming from my snobby city taste buds)

Sweet Beach Cottage

I came online to plan my vacation and saw the reviews of this property. I can only offer my opinion but disagree with the more "severe" reviews. We have stayed at this cottage several times and really enjoyed our times there. It is simply a sweet cottage, in a quiet neighborhood without all the crazinesss of the bars and foot traffic (although within walking distance from all of that, if you so choose). It is not a sprawling beach house with sea views, but rather tucked away, and quite charming. The master bedroom is large and the two smaller bedrooms are loft-like but quite comfortable. The master bedroom is on the first floor and has a private bath which makes it very convenient, especially for older folk who do not do stairs well. We have rented in shoulder seasons when the whether was questionable and enjoyed a nice fire in the fireplace. The kitchen has what you need to prepare great meals (and we always do), and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor dining. It is not the type of place to cram in 20 of your best drinking buddies..you will probably hear it from the neighbors, but if you want a quick 5 minute walk to a great beach, another 5 minutes to bike rental and ferry, a quiet place to enjoy your family, kids and all, then this is a good find.

Cozy Beach Cottage

My husband and I were thinking of vacationing elsewhere this summer but our kids insisted we head back to this cozy beach cottage for a third year in a row. It's only one block from the beach and very sweet. The kids like the the second floor loft-like bedrooms and you can hear the surf at night. The deck is great for barbecuing and there is a nice outdoor shower for rinsing off sandy bodies . My parents came to stay for a weekend and we rented bikes and rode into town for a movies and dinner. Everyone had a great time! Though it's only one hour from Manhattan we really felt so far away. The beach is amazing and the house is warm and perfect for our family and visits from grandparents

Huge Disappointment

RENTER BEWARE. Property was a huge disappointment to us. We rented it partly because it's advertised as "child friendly" We arrived for a weeks stay for my husband and myself, our son and daughter-in-law and 2 grandkids, ages 4 and 1.5, and left without spending the night. Owner met us at the ferry dock and led us to the house. She explained - front gate was broken, bicycle was broken and not available, telephone was not working, gas grill on deck would probably run out of propane, kid's climbing equipment in yard hadn't been cleaned (filled with leaf debris), deck chairs were sopping wet. We had 4 boxes of groceries - there was no cabinet space in kitchen and kitchen was so tiny there was no room for even storing boxes. Refrigerator door shelf collapsed when we placed milk and juice on it. Living room furniture and rugs appeared shabby and dirty, we couldn't find a comfortable place to even sit down. Owner said dining room table was "ruined" and was covered with shabby cloth. Picture on website indicates a regular size bed but it is 2 extremely thin mattresses on a platform. Stairs to 2nd & 3rd bedrooms are very steep and narrow and no child safety gate was provided - even though owner had known for several months we were bringing small children. Unfortunately, we did not realize we could have taken out the HomeAway Rental insurance. When we requested a partial refund from the owner, she said "I owe you nothing". The last straw was -- after explaining all the defects of the property, she asked us to replace the toilet paper if we used it all because she wouldn't be available before the next tenant arrived. Advice - do not rent this property without taking out insurance or viewing it beforehand.

Wonderful family vacation spot!

I stayed with my husband and twin daughters this past August (2011). The pictures do not do the place justice, it was WONDERFUL! The deck is enormous and well shaded with a lovely weeping willow, but also has plenty of sun. The outdoor shower is also really nice, large with a great bench and cut out window (but still private). The house has great amenities and is very close to ferry, store and beach (and also quite close to Seaview for those who know the island). We can't wait to stay in 2012!

Great weekend

I just sent Memorial Day weekend at this house. There was two couples and 3 singles and we all fit nicely. The house was charming and the outdoor deck and shower were great. 5 minute walk to the ferry and a 2 min walk to the beach. Close enough to have everything you need, but far enough from all the noise. Owner was beyond accomodating also, what a pleasure to rent from. My friends and I are already planning next year. I totally reccomend this great little house.

PERFECT

I stayed here with my friends for a girls weekend and it was perfect right from the start. The owner is a pleasure to deal with and was very accommodating. The pictures and listing was just as it is described. It was a little chilly for the beach but we were able to enjoy the house and lay out on the deck and still hear the ocean. The house was so clean and the outdoor shower was a dream. We are planning on coming back as much as we can. Thank you so much!

Why they chose this property

As a family we enjoyed this property for many years. Children are now grown and have built their own or moved far away with the grandchildren.

Family still uses the house during times when it is not rented. It's great to have the beach so near to where we live in New York City.

What makes this property unique

Living out of doors, eating on the deck, and such easy access to the water for swimming or walking on the beach.
