San Nari is the Provençal name of Saint Nazaire, a Roman martyr from the 1st century AD, to whom a place of worship was dedicated in the Middle Ages on the territory of present-day Sanary. A hamlet on the Mediterranean coast, sheltered by a seigniorial tower built around 1300, Saint-Nazaire took off in the 16th century.
The port of Sanary is recognized as one of the most typical and authentic on the French Mediterranean coast. A very old natural harbor, located in the heart of the town, it boasts some one hundred heritage boats, the oldest dating back to 1895, including the famous Provencal "pointus".
