About this property

Cottage on quiet farm close to town and wineries

Auburn Hill JEFFERSON cottage Circa 1802 offer a peaceful private setting on a historic horse farm once owned by Thomas Jefferson and part of the original Monticello estate, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. with close proximity to wineries (10 minutes), town (12 minutes), Monticello (next door neighbor), Rivanna River(borders the property) Carter mountain (8 minutes), Clifton Inn ( 2 minutes) and many other activities. The cottage dates back to 1805, the property was once part of Monticelo and owned by Thomas Jefferson. It has been completely updated and modernized, combining the best of both worlds. There is a private lake (catch and release fishing), along with a 14 foot dingy for those qualified to operate it!

A "Jimmy Buffet Key West" 20 x 40 heated salt water pool complex including a PRIVATE HIIGH END JACUZZI FOR EACH COTTAGE unit, a large grill with side burner, two large bars, pavilion, indoor/outdoor showers, bathroom/changing room, multiple outdoor games, two fire pit, two double hammocks and mountain/pasture views with complete privacy to enjoy the area. Most times it will be only you at the pool area. It is a working farm so there will be help around the farm to keep it well groomed for visitors.

Magical setting for watching wildlife like the bald eagles soaring down the river, multiple deer grazing in the fields, geese and ducks floating on the lake, or Great Blue Heron trying to catch lunch. Once on the farm you do not see any close neighbors (cottage is near main house, but situated to maximize privacy), unless you count looking up at the distant hillside to Monticello(see photo). The whistle or light rumbling of the distant train across the river can be heard on occasion. You can walk down to the rivers edge and sit on a large bolder watching the occasion kayakers floating down the river(or bring your own). James Monroe's home is only 10 minutes away, along with 14 wineries and 15 beer or cider breweries within 10 miles of the farm.

There are hiking trails on the farm and adult tire swings for your use. Feel free to bring your bikes or kayaks with you. No one will bother them at the farm and you will make good use of them in the area. Additionally I own another farm with 1100 acres about 15 minutes from Auburn Hill farm with extensive roads, trials and a large 13 acre lake which guest can use if requested.

I have owned a hotel and travel a lot, so tried to be thoughtful on the issues that bothered me when living out of a suitcase or backpack. Welcome feedback to correct any I missed or did not think of when remodeling the cottage for guests. Please contact me during your stay with any concerns or questions. There are boxes of artifacts (also many highlighted around the property) that I can make available if there is any interest in the farm or surrounding area history...,kick back and enjoy your stay.

Beautiful Mountain Stay
My fiancé and I had a wonderful time on the property, it was gorgeous and the cottage had everything we could need. The thoughtfulness and detail behind everything there shined through. The hot tub was wonderful; and I had a great time throwing axes by the pool.

A little slice of paradise
Thoughtful attention was given at every turn on this gorgeous property; The gardens, pool area, private jacuzzi hot tubs for each cottage, propane fire pits, beautiful private entrances with sitting areas and even motion lanterns to light your way if taking an evening stroll along the many quaint winding pathways. Exceeded our expectations. Beautifully done! Plus the dining and entertainment recommendations from Steve were stellar! We will definitely be staying here again!!!

Why they chose this property

Setting, history, lake, river and proximity to town but in the country. There is an old road in the back of the farm that the carriages used to travel onto get to Monticello and other areas. I have dug up arrowheads, bear teeth, porcelains, stained glass, old forged tools, whiskey barrel bands, beautiful cut glass, old hand made glass, an 1910 license plate, old child's metal fire truck, bottles and much more. Throughout the property there are some very old plants that are very hard to find anymore. The small house on your left as you come down the driveway is the old one room school house for the area. If you go up to Monticello make sure you look at the bronze sculpture map showing the Monticello lands as of the war of 1812.., the cottage is on the sculpture.
