About this property

Hillside log home in Pittsfield 7 miles from Killington base and Pico ski areas

“The Owl’s Nest” is centrally located in the heart of the Green Mountains in the town of Pittsfield, close to several world class ski resorts, the historic towns of Middlebury, and Woodstock, called America’s prettiest town, and just a few hours drive from Montreal, Boston or New York City. The Owl’s Nest is a beautiful log home that sits on 11 wooded acres in ski country just 7 miles from Killington’s K-1 base lodge or from Pico Mountain ski area. The warm and inviting great room is comfortably furnished and features a cathedral ceiling, an oversized fieldstone fireplace and exposed log posts and beams. Its two sets of oversized sliding doors lead onto a sunny south facing deck. Living, dining and kitchen are open architecture so you can all be together.

On the main floor there are two bedrooms - one with a queen size bed and one with two twin beds. The spacious bath on the main floor has a tub with shower. Upstairs are a master suite and a loft, currently used as an office space, overlooking the great room. (There’s a double size futon that can be moved into the master for little ones that want to be near mom and dad.) The master bedroom has a queen size bed and en-suite with separate shower and sky-lit jetted tub. The walk out basement is a family/ recreation room with a regulation size pool table and a dart board. (We are working on getting the non-working woodstove replaced.) There’s also a large bonus room with two child size bunk beds. The large, tiled bath has a shower.  The basement level has a utility room with instructions for using the new washer and dryer if you’re staying longer term. There is generous closet space throughout the house. The house may not be appropriate for unsupervised young children.

The Owl’s Nest well equipped kitchen has all the basics you need, plus an island, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster and blender. The large wrap around deck is covered on the east side. The house faces south and the southerly facing deck is about 12 feet deep with a large teak table that seats 6-8 people comfortably. Great for dining outside under the table’s umbrella in summer. Guests in excess of 6 people will receive an additional cleaning fee per person.

Pittsfield is a small village nestled between Stockbridge and Killington. The center of the town of Pittsfield is just 2 miles from the house. The general store has a good deli, basic groceries, Vermont themed gifts, good wine and beer selections, and tables where you can have a great breakfast or lunch. Across the street are a small grocer that also has a good deli and sandwiches, a gas station, and post office. Although a local favorite, the Clear River Tavern has closed, it has been replaced by a great Southern style restaurant, The Toasted Pecan.

The Owl’s Nest is 8/10 mile off Rte #100 and accessible from Rte #89 or Rte #4. The road is steep in places, as is our driveway. The house is best reached with AWD/4-wheel drive in winter and snow tires are a must! Weather in Vermont can be unpredictable, so please be prepared. Please read the directions to the house carefully as they contain landmarks to help you find the house. If you arrive after dark, there are no streetlights to guide you.

Please note: We have a cat who is in residence with us when we are in the house. All of the bedrooms have wall-to-wall carpet. If you have allergies, we may not be the right fit for you.futon that can be moved into the master

Beautiful Home in a Quiet and Peaceful Location
Anne's home is beautiful. It's comfortable and cozy and has a quintessential Vermont woodsy vibe. The location is great and so convenient. It's a short 10 minute drive to Killington. It's tucked away from the touristy stuff but close enough to get to it quickly. The owner was so accommodating, informative and replied promptly to any questions. Overall it was a great experience. Thank you Anne for sharing such a lovely home.

Spacious and clean with a great location.
A very clean and beautiful space that comfortably fit my group of 6. Anne was very helpful in communicating the check in and check out process. You may want an AWD vehicle if the weather is bad as the road to access the property is steep and unpaved.

Perfect
We frequent Vermont during the winter and this was definitely one of the best properties that we have stayed at. Amazing views and so much larger than it looked on VRBO.

About the host

My sister Nikki and I (above: Anne on the left, Nikki on the right) are world travelers. We both have an unquenchable thirst for exotic destinations. We joke that the more we travel, our bucket lists get longer instead of shorter. Sometimes we travel together but more often, we head in opposite directions. A few of our favorite destinations have been Argentina, Thailand, Brazil, Bhutan, Botswana, India, Turkey, Bolivia, Singapore and all of Europe). We grew up just west of Boston and after forays to various other places, we are both back in our old neighborhood. Not surprisingly, Nikki is a travel agent and gives stellar customer service. I retired from directing human resources for several companies and non-profits. Both sides of our family are high spirited, fun loving, and wicked jokesters. We adore our family and are grateful to have many cousins and two matriarchs, 103 (!) and 85 years old respectively!

Why they chose this property

I always knew it was just a question of time before I found my heart's desire in a property.in Vermont. Six generations of my family have lived and worked just a few miles from Pittsfield on the White River. When we were children, my parents traveled with us from the Boston area to Vermont for most holidays and every summer. I couldn't wait to get to my aunt's farm where my cousins and I would fish for trout, pick berries, hike, ride, jump in the haystack, learn about the farm animals and explore until it was too dark to see. I have the most beautiful memories of all things Vermont from maple creamies to skiing to the Tunbridge World's Fair and my grandmother's award-winning pies.

What makes this property unique

I dreamed this house! Before embarking on my lengthy search for the right house in the right location, I made a list of all my wants right down to what kind of roof it should have and which direction it should face! One hour after The Owl's Nest was listed, I was on the phone with my real estate agent begging for a showing. The energy and the light in the house are warm and inviting. Everything about the Nest speaks "family" to me and the family that entrusted it to us left us with a note of welcome and a promise of friendship. The Nest has great energy. All of our friends and family who have stayed with us have fallen in love with it. We think you will too. It's our part-time, year-round home and we love it so much; we think we should share it. We hope you'll love it and care for it the way we do. It's a little piece of heaven.
