Quirky Stay in a Stunning Setting

We absolutely loved this wild little place. There's an ample supply of cookware and kitchen implements, lots of great space to lounge in, a fun pool table and the view is just beautiful. Warning, there are broken blinds in the main guest bathroom (awkward because the window faces the deck) and the jacuzzi was broken (they didn't tell us ahead of time, sent someone to fix it; which did not resolve the issue. It wouldn't heat past 94 degrees). Ask in advance if they fixed these things ( I tried to contact them outside of a review but they haven't gotten back to me). We loved hiking and spending time at Sierra Hot Springs.

Victorian Egyptology

Little Touches at Avalon Ranchita Rococo revival ain’t in it. It’s a decor revival all right, but it’s not as frilly and silly as that French Rococo movement. More like Victorian Egyptology meets the High Sierra Valley. Egypt in the High Sierras? No it’s not a vacation rental comedy. Though there are enough whimsical twists and turns throughout this house, porch and grounds, that your funny bone may get tickled. Likely giggles and grins await your contrast between Cleopatra’s bedroom and the pharaohs. Mark Anthony would be proud. But like him, you will have to decide. Bring your own soft touch about where to sleep. His or hers? Either is a hoot. The two bathrooms are a marvel of contrasts as well. The hall bath continues the Victorian theme touches, highlighted by a fabulous full figured clawfoot bathtub. The windowless utility bathroom still has a hidden passageway feel sharing space with the washer and dryer. But seriously folks. The front room living space looks positively Victorian, a quaint decor parlor with a full usable silver tea set awaiting the guests arrival. When you walk in the neo-tiffany’s illuminate the space with a radiating warmth. The kitchen and great room have soaring ceiling windows that give a pastoral perspective of the Sierras. Looking out there’s enough awe to make you swoon if you’re so inclined. Faint of heart, take heart. Good thing since there are not one but two fainting couches in the great room for weaklings who can’t stand to behold the vastness of the mountains. Here, just lie back and try to take it all in. This polished rancher is nestled at the headwaters of the Sierra Valley, the largest valley in the entire mountain range. It’s prim and tidy exterior belies the cultivated tastes of a decorator who likes lots of charming little touches. They extend into a music and play room. Sporting a full size pool table, slightly out of tune upright piano, woodstove, and sprawling double bunk beds, there is something fun for everyone in this part of Avalon Ranchita. Stocked with games, books and toys even for little ones, the older bigger ones will enjoy the puzzles and the musical selections of drums. Outside little touches expand into a big very usable patio area nestled up against the house. It’s features a a fine covered porch, with lots of tables and chairs for hosting an outdoor gathering, a hot tub, and, a fire pit. Given the local sensitivity about fire hazards you would probably want to check with the local volunteers about precautions when having an open fire pit burn in such a drought and habitat sensitive area. So bring your own soft touch fire prevention and ecological awareness to a tidy ranchita in a spectacular part of the mountains. And try to hold your smirk when you sense and experience all on your own the little soft touches."

Lovely quirky home, great privacy

The home was wonderful with all of its quirky charm. It's clear the owners really care about guiding the guest in how best to enjoy the house. Plenty of kitchen gadgets, and the hot tub was great. They had even prepared the wood/kindling in the fireplace so we could get a fire going quickly. I will say there is a small shed/cabin that is private on the side patio with a bed inside. The owner may occasionally stay/visit that shed; however, they were not present when we were there over the weekend. It's worth checking whether this will be an issue for you.
