About this property

Ultimate: 350 steps to Stearns Beach--short walk to lighthouse, town, harbor

Now for the story:

Our English Cottage was built in 1930 on the top of a dune rise. It sits only 350 footsteps from Stearns Beach, one of the top-rated beaches on Lake Michigan. The house is in an exclusive neighborhood of large and historic homes. You won’t find a better location in Ludington (or maybe the whole world!).

For instance, you can pack your towels and walk to the beach in five minutes. The same short walk in another direction will take you downtown, to the harbor, or to play parks for your children. Many guests tell us they enjoy brewing a morning coffee and walking to the lighthouse or the harbor to watch the S.S. Badger and the herring gulls pass by. (Of note, the first log home in Ludington was built on this property.)

The first floor is renovated with high ceilings, a bay window, French doors, and arches. The floor plan features a center hall, leading to three bedrooms, one with a sunroom facing west towards the lake. There is a private master bedroom bath and a full hall bath. All the ornate, original radiators remain. (We plan to keep them forever!)

The second floor has a kitchen, full bath, dining area, and one bedroom with a queen bed. There is a queen futon and a sturdy rollaway bed for sleeping. You can reach the second floor through either outside or inside exits.

Outside, you'll have a gathering area on a covered porch (great for coffee or cocktails). The yard is sloped and contains a fire pit, charcoal grill, picnic table, and chairs (enough for everyone).

The first and second floor and the grounds are included in the rental. The basement and garage are reserved for the owners' use.

There are two small parking spots on the garage apron and one at the motel office. We have a large corner lot where parking is allowed at the curb for cars, boats, and trailers up to 22 feet in length. (There is a 6-unit motel on the property as well. If you wish to rent extra rooms for your guests, you can book them through us.)

Great location house with everything you need to stay in a regular home!!!
This was a great home to stay in for a week with our 6 children. Plenty of space and everything we needed for the week! We loved having everything furnished in this house! The waffle maker and mixer came in especially handy for big breakfast mornings! We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Ludington location
My husband and I rented this property for a family get togehter with children and grandchildren. The location of the property was perfect. We enjoyed walking to the beach, lighthouse, marina and downtown. The house was very roomy and well stocked with towels, bedding, etc., and supplies such as toilet paper, dish soap, dishwasher soap, etc. The only thing that we thought could use some improvement was the outdoor area; the firepit and grill provided were very old.

About the host

Host profile image
I'm an author with four published books and many articles. I love sand walking at Stearns Beach and do so daily. I have three grown children, two living in Ludington. I also love helping our guests enjoy their stays in Ludington.

My partner, who is my daughter, works as an enrolled agent for Intuit during the winter months. She still has quite a few children. If you stay with us, you might ask about that.

Why they chose this property

My grandfather owned a cottage on Hamlin Lake in Ludington. During my childhood, I loved the birch trees, the little minnows wiggling in the lake, and the big fish my parents and grandparents caught with them. Though I had much pity for the minnows.

When a chance came to buy this property, I did so in a heartbeat. I relocated from southern Ohio.

What makes this property unique

You will hear the waves at night while in bed. You can see the lake from the upstairs window (when the leaves drop from the trees). You can see and hear the S.S. Badger car ferry leaving and returning from our living room window.

I have a SECRET DUNE CLIMB MAP. At the top of the dune, you can see Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. You will be above the trees, relatively close to heaven! You will never forget the sight before your eyes. My husband, a consulting forester, provides maps for my guests. Many locals do not know of this spot. It is my secret. But I will share it with you. I will give you the map. For free.
