Marienthal is mentioned for the first time in a letter from the Kurmark War and Domain Chamber in Berlin dated 26 March 1754. It was created as a Brandenburg border village along the country road, at the crossing over the Wentow Canal built in 1732. Mainly linen weavers found a new home here. The Wentow Canal was expanded in 1816, so that it was also used with Oder-made barges. With the discovery of the clay deposits between Zehdenick and Marienthal, numerous brick factories were created in 1880. In addition to Zieglern, the barges' barges, which were mainly used to transport bricks, formed a large group of the population.
The history of Mariethal is therefore closely linked to shipping. The ship club was founded in 1842, and it still exists today and traditionally celebrates its skipper ball every year.
The Great Wentowsee and the much smaller Little Wentowsee owe their origin to the last ice age. The over 10 km long basin was excavated by melting water flowing under the ice. With more than 200 km2, the catchment area for this 279 hectare lake is quite large. About two thirds are forested, the rest are farmed. There are some clay engravings in the immediate vicinity of the bank. Its natural drain, the "Tornower Fließ", which is closed to boats of all kinds, flows into the Havel. The amount of water is regulated by a dam. The outflow is now mainly through the navigable Wentow Canal into the Havel. The Great Wentowsee with its shallow depth (max 3.9m) naturally has a nutrient-rich state with rather cloudy water (plankton cloudy). The visibility depths are only 0.2 meters on average during the bathing season. Underwater vegetation cannot develop under these conditions. In some areas there are wide silting areas with floating leaf plants and dense reed beds that offer a good habitat for various waterfowl species. Common grebes, pale claws, mallard ducks and gray herons are common.
Our region owes its name to the upper Havel. With its canals and numerous lakes, it runs through our district from north to south like a blue ribbon and shapes the face of Fürstenberg, Zehdenicks, Liebenwaldes, Oranienburgs and Hennigsdorfs.
For Oberhavel, the Havel is recreational space, source of life, geographical bracket, economic factor and waterway at the same time.
The Ruppiner Seenland together with the adjacent Mecklenburg Lake District is one of the most beautiful boat areas in Europe. More than 2,000 kilometers of waterways, some of them mysteriously entwined, invite you to discover something new - a paradise for water and nature lovers. You can expect reed-lined banks, water lily ponds, swamps and bogs, but also varied moraine areas, extensive natural landscapes, heathland and rustic beech, mixed and pine forests.
