About this property

Nature Lovers Family Friendly Farmhouse near Pickwick Lake

New high speed fiber optic internet!
Downing Hollow Farm is a 35 acre farm nestled in a hollow in the rolling hill country between Memphis and Nashville. Located in Middle Tennessee east of Savannah TN, Olivehill is 30 minutes from Pickwick Landing State Park and 30 minutes to Natchez Trace Parkway. It's a magical place full of sunshine and babbling creeks and mysterious forests. Watch the fireflies lift up from the pastures, hear the whippoorwill sing her lonesome song and enjoy the cool air drifting down through the hollow.

The farmhouse has central heat and air and is very comfortable throughout the seasons. Big windows allow lots of natural light to filter in and there's always a nice view from every window. The kitchen is fun to cook in cause there's room for friends and family to help out. We have lots of board games and lots of DVDs for adults and children. Two porches to relax on, the back porch is screened in where one can hear the babbling creek a stones throw away, and the front porch looks out over the green pastures and the wooded ridges in the distance. Bring your dogs and your instruments and just kick back and enjoy the peacefulness of the hollow. I also have an outdoor wood-fired oven, fire pit, charcoal grill and a hammock that guests can use. Through the summer, you’ll encounter migratory and native birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, lizards, raccoons, groundhogs, foxes, deer and owls along the paths cut through the pastures of wildflowers. Yes, and the occasional snake. Lot's of hiking around the property and a small waterfall about 45 min hike along the creek.
Guest access
Our country road is paved well in spots, bumpy in some spots. GPS may take you on a wrong turn so please ask for driving directions. Our driveway is a grassy lane leading way, way back into the hollow. Take it easy there for sure! There are outdoor security cameras at the entrance to the driveway, the barn and the greenhouse. They are actively monitored for vehicles coming and going.
Downing Hollow Farm is located 6 miles off the the Trail of Tears National Scenic Highway and 30 minutes from the Natchez Trace Parkway. Canoeing and kayaking just 6 miles down the road. If you are a Civil War buff then Hardin County is the place to be. Shiloh National Park and Battlefields are an easy drive just 30 minutes away from the farm. Even closer is the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah and the Crump Flea Market across the Tennessee River from Savannah. Catch record-breaking catfish in the waters of Pickwick Lake at Pickwick Landing State Park, 30 miles away. There you can access swimming areas, boat rentals, jump off waterfalls, golf and eat fried catfish and hushpuppies at the local restaurants.
Other things to note
There will sometimes be guests staying in our nearby tiny cottage.

Wonderful weekend getaway
Great place to step back and spend some quality time with your family. Beautiful house and land the only bad thing could also be seen as a good thing and that is that there is absolutely nothing around so if you need something youre looking and a 30-45 minute drive one way or but great place. Great host Lori was woderful!

Sister's road trip
My sister and I decided to take a road trip on our way to see my son and family. I found this property and immediately thought it would be perfect for our trip. It ended up being a little out of the way but we felt it was worth the drive. My only fault was it was raining so we didn't get to wander. Thanks Lori for your hospitality. We sincerely enjoyed our stay.

I'm a musician, chef and farmer who loves to meet new people and share my beautiful farm with them. In 2004, we settled at Downing Hollow Farm in Olivehill, TN, located adjacent to my hometown of Savannah, TN. We started a family and watched our children grow up and flourish in this country setting. This is also where my love of gardening evolved into farming. At Downing Hollow, we established two acres of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, 15 acres of pasture, a small pear orchard, and two high tunnel greenhouses. Downing Hollow Farm’s assortment of heirloom and specialty produce, grown using sustainable organic methods, was a fixture at the Memphis farmers markets from 2006 to 2013, and the farm hosted interns from all over the world. I also cofounded the Cooper-Young Farmers Market in 2010, which is still going strong today.
Today, I divide my time between Memphis and Olivehill, TN. In recent years, I established Downing Hollow Farm as a part-time vacation rental for R&R and event space for retreats and workshops. I am also enjoying this second phase of the farm’s life, and it is my great honor and joy to share the beauty and magic of this serene, pastoral setting with visitors who come from far and wide.

Why they chose this property

Some of the happiest times of my life were spent as a kid, trekking through creeks, pastures and woodlands, and riding my pony bareback at a good friend's farm nearby. Those memories have stayed with me all my life, so when we had the opportunity to purchase the Downing Hollow property, I knew this was the place for my family. The property was a bare-bones Mennonite home without electricity, plus it was not finished out both inside and out. So began the long, challenging refurbishment and learning experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What makes this property unique

Downing Hollow is named after the Downing Family that lived in the hollow back in the 1800s. I've had the honor to host the Downing Family reunion in 2022!
I'm sure they settled here because of the abundant wildlife, limestone creeks, and cool breezes that waft down the hollow. The soil is rich with minerals and the creeks are pure and cold. The Olivehill community grew and once had an old country store/ post office, old stone church and elementary school. Now we are so lucky to have a Mennonite community that live in this area with their church only 1/2 mile down the road. we would never have been able to navigate country living without the ongoing help and sage advice of our Mennonite Neighbors.
