## Neighborhood

Rouen's Vieux-Marché district is one of the city's most emblematic and historic landmarks. Located right in the heart of the city, this district is famous for its rich medieval heritage and picturesque atmosphere, which attracts residents and visitors alike. It takes its name from the Place du Vieux-Marché, which has been central to life in Rouen for centuries.

The Place du Vieux-Marché is infamous as the place where Joan of Arc was burnt alive on 30 May 1431 after being tried for heresy. This significant event in French history is commemorated by several monuments in the area. These include a wrought-iron cross on the exact site of the stake, and the Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, built in 1979. This modern church has a bold architectural design, with a shape reminiscent of a boat or a flame, and houses magnificent 16th-century stained-glass windows salvaged from an earlier church destroyed during the Second World War.

The district is also notable for the many half-timbered houses that line the cobbled streets, bearing witness to Rouen's medieval past. Most of these houses date back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, adding a timeless charm to the atmosphere of the district. The surrounding streets, such as the rue du Gros-Horloge, add to this historic atmosphere with their traditional buildings and shops.

Today, the Vieux-Marché district is a lively and dynamic place, frequented by tourists and locals alike. There are many restaurants, bars and cafés, often housed in the old buildings, so you can soak up the history while enjoying a moment of conviviality. The terraces lining the square are particularly popular, especially in fine weather, offering direct views of the surrounding monuments.

The open-air markets that continue to be held in the square perpetuate the tradition of trade that has existed for centuries. They often feature local produce, flowers, handicrafts and sometimes themed events.

Nearby attractions:

Le Gros-Horloge: Just a stone's throw from the Place du Vieux-Marché, this astronomical clock, located on a vaulted passageway above the street of the same name, is one of Rouen's most famous symbols.

L'Aître Saint-Maclou: Not far from the district, this former ossuary dating from the Middle Ages is an unusual place, with macabre sculptures bearing witness to the Black Death that ravaged the city.

Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral: Another nearby marvel, famous in particular for the many paintings by Claude Monet that have immortalised its Gothic façade.

The Vieux-Marché district is therefore a true crossroads between history and modernity, a place where Rouen's glorious past and lively daily life meet.

## Transit

For parking, there is a car park 30 m away on foot in the courtyard of a former town house (beeper available to open the gate).

Public transport nearby:

Metro: The nearest metro station is just a few minutes' walk away, giving you quick access to popular areas such as the city centre, train station or shopping areas.

Bus: There are several bus routes in the immediate vicinity of Place Cauchoise, including routes 3, 4 and 5. These routes serve various points of interest, making it easy to get around Rouen and to the surrounding towns and villages.

TEOR: The TEOR line, a high service level bus service, is also nearby. It allows you to travel comfortably and quickly throughout the metropolis, with strategic stops linking key areas of the city.

Accessibility: Whether you want to visit Rouen's magnificent cathedral, stroll through Old Rouen or discover museums, everything is within easy reach thanks to an efficient transport network.
