About this property

Historic Estate on 40 Private Acres with Pool, Pond & Views!

Fallen Fence is one of five original Whittlesey Mansions dating circa 1750 to 1800. The Whittlesey family settled the area in the 1700s. During the Revolutionary War George Washington visited the family’s tavern, (an historical landmarked tavern just down the road). Washington, Ct, was the first town to be named for the president after the Revolutionary War. Elijah Whittlesey, who grew up in the house (and who’s aunt and uncle owned the inn that Washington visited), went on to serve 5 terms as a U.S. congressman and he served under 3 U.S. presidents including President Lincoln (as treasury secretary) with whom he oversaw the design construction and funding of the Washington Monument.

This historic center hall colonial is located on 40 acres in glorious Litchfield County, CT. The spacious home has retained much of its original charm but with modern day amenities. Countryside getaway

Fallen Fences was the perfect place for our short sister getaway. The property is picturesque, the house comfortable and well stocked with updated bathrooms, antiques and every kitchen need. Our only suggestion would be a bedside stool to get into the tall antique bed in the master.

Family Get Together

We have stayed at a number of properties over the past number of years. This stay is the new high bar. The property, the rooms, the kitchen - pretty much everything was exceptional. The pool was the high point, my granddaughter loved it and we spent many hours in and around the water. The location is really close to many essentials, which was convenient. Given the opportunity to stay again, we will jump at the chance. It is already being talked about amongst my daughters.

Great house, amazing kitchen

Great house for a weekend away from the city. The pool area is wonderful. The kitchen is superb. The house gets a lot of light during the summer. Would suggest bringing a sleep mask, no curtains/blinds.

Idyllic retreat

Perfect private & scenic location for our large family. The kitchen was top notch with everything you need on hand. We lived in the pool and or on the hill and had plenty of room to play badminton, games, and relax. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful property for a three-generation family gathering

When our daughter who lives on the west coast came to NYC for a conference, we looked for a place where she and her two children could spend time together with her sister and sister's family, and us. We were so fortunate to find Fallen Fence -- the ideal property for 2 grandparents, 3 parents, and 4 children ages 4-7. The spacious kitchen was a wonderfully designed and equipped for group cooking, and the beautiful round dining room table was an elegant setting for our meals together. There are multiple rooms downstairs for different activities for smaller groups - one person could find a cozy quiet place to read or four could play a board game without disturbing others. The adults all had privacy in the three bedrooms on the second floor, while the children claimed the third floor rooms both for their "sleepovers" together and as their daytime playroom and hideaway. The house retains its historic quality but it has been tastefully modernized for comfort. The magnificent grounds of this property are breathtakingly beautiful. We were there on a cold March weekend so we mostly enjoyed the inspiring views through the windows, but in warm weather the outdoor property would be a memorable pleasure garden.

Magical Country House

We stayed at Fallen Fence for a weekend in September for a family member's birthday celebration and were all so impressed with the house and the property - we never left the whole weekend! Everyone was happy and content to just relax and enjoy this magnificent place. House is very big and spacious with lots of light and has maintained a lot of its original historical charm and architecture. Interior décor is a beautiful eclectic mix of old world and new, with artwork from all over the world. The gourmet kitchen had everything we needed for all our cooking needs. The pool, the property and the views are just gorgeous. We spent a lot of time at the pool which had the most breathtaking view of the mountains and the landscape that we felt so very away from it all and relaxed. Fallen Fence definitely met all of our expectations and will recommend this house to friends and family and hope to come back again soon!

Stunning views in a charming, quirky country home

We had a fantastic stay at this charming home near New Preston. The landscape and views are spectacular, with fields leading to a pond and then forested hills rising in the distance. The house is comfortable and spacious and totally quirky, with a sweet, rambling layout and wonderful enclosed sun porch. The house is located on a main country road, so there is some slight car noise you notice when outside or when opening road-facing windows, but it is white noise that isn't irksome and is quickly forgotten. The house is decorated beautifully with lots of antique pieces that feel they have been collected over time. The master bedroom is enormous, with a large, luxurious en-suite bathroom. Two other bedrooms on that floor are small- and medium-sized and share a recently renovated, more standard bathroom. The attic has been converted into a second master suite, though it is not as comfortable as the first (you remember you are in an attic), and you have to climb a steep spiral staircase to reach it. In all, we had a wonderful time and would gladly return!

An Outdoor Dream!

We stayed at Fallen Fence last August for a week for our anniversary. We have 4 children so we are always looking for space. This house has it and more. There is a TV room, large living room. The attic loft was the favorite hangout for our teens. I love to cook and this well stocked kitchen, with it's commercial range, plenty of counter space and a large fridge was just want we needed. There are two patios, one off the kitchen that is very convenient for barbecuing. The other overlooks the grounds and pool. With a hand painted terra cotta tuscan table that seats 10 it's the perfect place for lunch (it has an automatic awning for sunny days) or for a lovely dinner setting. One of the things I loved the most about this house is that there were 5 different places on the property where you can have breakfast, lunch, formal dinner, cocktail party. It's really set up very well for entertaining. Lot's of linens, glassware, cutlery and dinnerware and serving plates. The place, simply put, is gorgeous. I'm not much of an outdoors or pool person but the rest of my family is and they really enjoyed the pool, hiking and boating in the pond. It's just a wonderful home!

#FallenFence was amazing!

We enjoyed the best of summer at this wonderful and enchanting home. My family of my wife and 4 children frolicked and swam in the gorgeous pool everyday. We took the canoe out on the pond and hiked up the ridge often. The home was very comfortable with every amenity needed. The beds were all comfy with nice sheets and towels. Nicely redone bathrooms. I still think of my time there. We hope to return in the near future.

Perfect Stay

Beautifully restored home on beautiful property. The pictures barely do the home justice. My family of 7 spent an August week at Fallen Fence. The house, pool and property exceeded our expectations. The kitchen was equipped and stocked as well as home, nice bed linens, plenty of towels for the pool. Inside the house was spotless and outside was well groomed, freshly cut lawn and well maintained gardens. The owner was friendly and attentive. We are looking forward to a return visit.

Fallen Fence was truly magical in every way. We are eager to get back as soon as we can!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We never even left the house. Spent most days lazy by the pool watching the wildlife and views. We discovered a secret spot each day. The decor is superb and whimsical. A real treasure.

I'm a film and video Producer/Director in New York City. We bought the property in 2002. After owning a house in the Hamptons for several years, we decided we wanted to live in the country. I grew up in VT and really missed New England. We also own a home in the Rousillion area of France and a 1 bedroom apartment in New York, both of which we rent too! We're often there so it's nice to have people in the CT. house. Here's the vrbo # for the house in France. 317662

Why they chose this property

The area has New England charm and rural character along with a air of sophistication. It has great restaurants, culture, music, theater etc. and is 90 miles from NYC!

What makes this property unique

The name of the house is Fallen Fence because, when I first bought it, it had a long winding fallen down fence around the property. Fallen fence is the most picturesque, peaceful place you'll ever know. And it's fun too!
