## Emplacement
From its past, Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this city of Art and History of the Var has an important historical and architectural heritage.
The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheater, a theater and an aqueduct with some pillars and arcades. Dating from the end of the 1st century, the arenas could accommodate nearly 12,000 spectators who came to watch gladiator fights!
In the old town, the episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th centuries, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It unites the beautiful cathedral of Saint-Léonce, with a Romanesque style bell tower and two naves connected by several arcades. But also the octagonal baptistery dating from the 5th century, one of the oldest in France, the episcopal palace transformed into a town hall, as well as the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling was adorned with real or imaginary characters and animals. The archaeological museum adjoining the cloister houses remarkable ancient carved pieces from excavations carried out in the Roman city.
Also go to the Chapel of Our Lady of Jerusalem, designed by Jean Cocteau and dedicated to the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre.
The marina, Port-Fréjus, and the fine sandy beach of Fréjus-Plage make this town in the Var region a very sought-after seaside resort. The water park Aqualand and the zoo, where live a hundred animal species from five continents, will appeal to both children and adults.
Accessible by a hike, the remains of the Malpasset dam show the violence of the 1959 tragedy where a wave nearly 40 meters high destroyed everything in its path, causing more than 400 victims.
