About this property

Charming Village House 15 min by foot from the Toulourenc river !

Important for travelers : The house is NOT located very near Malaucene, it's in Veaux, a very small village 15-20 Minutes away from Malaucene.

Veaux is a 350-year-old valley hamlet belonging to the town of Malaucene, seven miles away, and lies less than three miles from the quaint old castle-crowned village of Mollans, where there is shopping and dining. Veaux lies just off a country road, so there is very little traffic in the hamlet--good for kids. Our simple restored eighteenth-century house boasts walls of fieldstone and a tile-covered roof; there is a private graveled courtyard, perfect for outdoor dining.

The house rises three stories and features rustic beams, red-tiled floors, and white interior walls. A turn-of-the century buffet and an eighteenth-century dining table grace the cozy kitchen/dining room, which is separated by an archway from the more contemporary-style small sitting-room; the W.C. is also on the ground floor.

A spiral wooden stairway with wrought-iron rails rises from the sitting-room to the second and third floors, on each of which is a wrought-iron single bed on a room-sized sleeping-landing, plus an enclosed bedroom containing a spool double bed (total = 2 double + 2 twin beds); the focus of the upper bedroom is a magnificent Louis Philippe armoire. There is a washbasin on the second-floor landing and an enclosed shower on the third-floor landing. The third floor affords a lovely view across the valley to the high hills.

The house makes a perfect place to come home to after a day of visiting Provence's gorgeous scenery, ancient monuments, or open-air markets, a place where you can cook your own, economical (not to mention, homey) meals away from the madding crowd.

Surrounding the hamlet are rocky mountain slopes at whose feet lie the neat rows of the vineyards, and the clean little Toulourenc River and its gorges in the valley bottom--within easy walking distance--beckons to waders and hikers. Strolls up the little rural road in the long, delicious summer evenings are a particular pleasure. (For additional information and other properties, see our Website rentalhousesinprovence.)

This is a photo of my wife, my grandson, and me.
My wife and I are both former college teachers of geography and now live in Southwest Virginia (with a cat). My daughter Jennifer and her husband Allan, of San Diego, have also been very involved in our two vacation-rental houses in Provence, as was my late mother. Our favorite non-business activities in Provence are sight-seeing, walking, going to markets, eating both at home and in restaurants, and seeing friends--when not working on the houses.

Why they chose this property

I went to Versailles, France, in 1960 with the Experiment in International Living. The French family I lived with had a summer home in Provence and took me there; it was love at first sight, and I longed to acquire an atmospheric old house to restore. I bought this, the first of an eventual four houses in Veaux (all available to rent), in 1969.

What makes this property unique

This antiques-furnished country home (one of 4 we rent out) is located in a quaint and quiet hamlet in a deep valley on the northern side of Mont Ventoux, highest peak in the Department of the Vaucluse. The surrounding hill-and-valley country is among the most scenic in Provence. Although providing a sense of isolation, the hamlet is a good base for exploring the many attractions of Provence via day trips, and lies less than ten miles from the old Roman and medieval town of Vaison-la-Romaine. The house has a private courtyard good for outdoor meals. Entering the valley via gorges, the Toulourenc River is said to be the only unpolluted stream in the Vaucluse and is great for wading and hiking (the gorges attract some nudists); there are other official hiking trails that pass through the valley. The surrounding region offers cultural events and antiquing, as well as many fine markets, restaurants, and wineries. Extensive information is supplied to renters.
